Himalayan glacier tongues are commonly debris covered and they are an important source of melt water. However, they remain relatively unstudied because of the inaccessibility of the terrain and the difficulties in field work caused by the thick debris mantles. Observations of debris-covered glaciers are therefore scarce and airborne remote sensing may bridge the gap between scarce field observations and coarse resolution space-borne remote sensing. In this study we deploy an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) before and after the melt and monsoon season (May and October 2013) over the debris-covered tongue of the Lirung Glacier in Nepal. Based on stereo-imaging and the structure for motion algorithm we derive highly detailed ortho-mosaics and digital elevation models (DEMs), which we geometrically correct using differential GPS observations collected in the field. Based on DEM differencing and manual feature tracking we derive the mass loss and the surface velocity of the glacier at a high spatial accuracy. On average, mass loss is limited and the surface velocity is very small. However, the spatial variability of melt rates is very high, and ice cliffs and supra-glacial ponds show mass losses that can be an order of magnitude higher than the average. We suggest that future research should focus on the interaction between supra-glacial ponds, ice cliffs and englacial hydrology to further understand the dynamics of debris-covered glaciers. Finally, we conclude that UAV deployment has large potential in glaciology and it may revolutionize methods currently applied in studying glacier surface features.

High-Resolution Monitoring of Himalayan Glacier Dynamics Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

With almost limitless applications across marine and freshwater environments, the number of people using, and wanting to use, remotely piloted aircraft systems (or drones) is increasing exponentially. However, successfully using drones for data collection and mapping is often preceded by hours of researching drone capabilities and functionality followed by numerous limited-success flights as users tailor their approach to data collection through trial and error. Working over water can be particularly complex and the published research using drones rarely documents the methodology and practical information in sufficient detail to allow others, with little remote pilot experience, to replicate them or to learn from their mistakes. This can be frustrating and expensive, particularly when working in remote locations where the window of access is small. The aim of this paper is to provide a practical guide to drone-based data acquisition considerations. We hope to minimise the amount of trial and error required to obtain high-quality, map-ready data by outlining the principles and practice of data collection using drones, particularly in marine and freshwater environments. Importantly, our recommendations are grounded in remote sensing and photogrammetry theory so that the data collected are appropriate for making measurements and conducting quantitative data analysis.

Principles and practice of acquiring drone based image data in marine environments

Crop biomass estimation with high accuracy at low-cost is valuable for precision agriculture and high-throughput phenotyping. Recent technological advances in Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) significantly facilitate data acquisition at low-cost along with high spatial, spectral, and temporal resolution. The objective of this study was to explore the potential of UAS RGB imagery-derived spectral, structural, and volumetric information, as well as a proposed vegetation index weighted canopy volume model (CVMVI) for soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] aboveground biomass (AGB) estimation. RGB images were collected from low-cost UAS throughout the growing season at a field site near Columbia, Missouri, USA. High-density point clouds were produced using the structure from motion (SfM) technique through a photogrammetric workflow based on UAS stereo images. Two-dimensional (2D) canopy structure metrics such as canopy height (CH) and canopy projected basal area (BA), as well as three-dimensional (3D) volumetric metrics such as canopy volume model (CVM) were derived from photogrammetric point clouds. A variety of vegetation indices (VIs) were also extracted from RGB orthomosaics. Then, CVMVI, which combines canopy spectral and volumetric information, was proposed. Commonly used regression models were established based on the UAS-derived information and field- measured AGB with a leave-one-out cross-validation. The results show that: (1) In general, canopy 2D structural metrics CH and BA yielded higher correlation with AGB than VIs. (2) Three-dimensional metrics, such as CVM, that encompass both horizontal and vertical properties of canopy provided better estimates for AGB compared to 2D structural metrics (R2 = 0.849; RRMSE = 18.7%; MPSE = 20.8%). (3) Optimized CVMVI, which incorporates both canopy spectral and 3D volumetric information outperformed the other indices and metrics, and was a better predictor for AGB estimation (R2 = 0.893; RRMSE = 16.3%; MPSE = 19.5%). In addition, CVMVI showed equal prediction power for different genotypes, which indicates its potential for high-throughput soybean biomass estimation. Moreover, a CVMVI based univariate regression model yielded AGB predicting capability comparable to multivariate complex regression models such as stepwise multilinear regression (SMR) and partial least squares regression (PLSR) that incorporate multiple canopy spectral indices and structural metrics. Overall, this study reveals the potential of canopy spectral, structural and volumetric information, and their combination (i.e., CVMVI) for estimations of soybean AGB. CVMVI was shown to be simple but effective in estimating AGB, and could be applied for high-throughput phenotyping and precision agro-ecological applications and management.

Vegetation Index Weighted Canopy Volume Model (CVMVI) for soybean biomass estimation from Unmanned Aerial System-based RGB imagery

Salt marsh productivity is an important control of resiliency to sea level rise. However, our understanding of how marsh biomass and productivity vary across fine spatial and temporal scales is limited. Remote sensing provides a means for characterizing spatial and temporal variability in marsh aboveground biomass, but most satellite and airborne sensors have limited spatial and/or temporal resolution. Imagery from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be used to address this data gap. We combined seasonal field surveys and multispectral UAV imagery collected using a DJI Matrice 100 and Micasense Rededge sensor from the Carpinteria Salt Marsh Reserve in California, USA to develop a method for high-resolution mapping of aboveground saltmarsh biomass. UAV imagery was used to test a suite of vegetation indices in their ability to predict aboveground biomass (AGB). The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) provided the strongest correlation to aboveground biomass for each season and when seasonal data were pooled, though seasonal models (e.g., spring, r2 = 0.67; RMSE = 344 g m−2) were more robust than the annual model (r2 = 0.36; RMSE = 496 g m−2). The NDVI aboveground biomass estimation model (AGB = 2428.2 × NDVI + 120.1) was then used to create maps of biomass for each season. Total site-wide aboveground biomass ranged from 147 Mg to 205 Mg and was highest in the spring, with an average of 1222.9 g m−2. Analysis of spatial patterns in AGB demonstrated that AGB was highest in intermediate elevations that ranged from 1.6–1.8 m NAVD88. This UAV-based approach can be used aid the investigation of biomass dynamics in wetlands across a range of spatial scales.

Mapping Coastal Wetland Biomass from High Resolution Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Imagery

Very high-resolution satellite imagery (≤5 m resolution) has become available on a spatial and temporal scale appropriate for dynamic wetland management and conservation across large areas. Estuarine wetlands have the potential to be mapped at a detailed habitat scale with a frequency that allows immediate monitoring after storms, in response to human disturbances, and in the face of sea-level rise. Yet mapping requires significant fieldwork to run modern classification algorithms and estuarine environments can be difficult to access and are environmentally sensitive. Recent advances in unoccupied aircraft systems (UAS, or drones), coupled with their increased availability, present a solution. UAS can cover a study site with ultra-high resolution (<5 cm) imagery allowing visual validation. In this study we used UAS imagery to assist training a Support Vector Machine to classify WorldView-3 and RapidEye satellite imagery of the Rachel Carson Reserve in North Carolina, USA. UAS and field-based accuracy assessments were employed for comparison across validation methods. We created and examined an array of indices and layers including texture, NDVI, and a LiDAR DEM. Our results demonstrate classification accuracy on par with previous extensive fieldwork campaigns (93% UAS and 93% field for WorldView-3; 92% UAS and 87% field for RapidEye). Examining change between 2004 and 2017, we found drastic shoreline change but general stability of emergent wetlands. Both WorldView-3 and RapidEye were found to be valuable sources of imagery for habitat classification with the main tradeoff being WorldView’s fine spatial resolution versus RapidEye’s temporal frequency. We conclude that UAS can be highly effective in training and validating satellite imagery.
