Permanent magnet AC (PMAC) motor drives are finding expanded use in high-performance applications where torque smoothness is essential. This paper reviews a wide range of motor- and controller-based design techniques that have been described in the literature for minimizing the generation of cogging and ripple torques in both sinusoidal and trapezoidal PMAC motor drives. Sinusoidal PMAC drives generally show the greatest potential for pulsating torque minimization using well-known motor design techniques such as skewing and fractional slot pitch windings. In contrast, trapezoidal PMAC drives pose more difficult trade-offs in both the motor and controller design which may require compromises in drive simplicity: and cost to improve torque smoothness. Controller-based techniques for minimizing pulsating torque typically involve the use of active cancellation algorithms which depend on either accurate tuning or adaptive control schemes for effectiveness. In the end, successful suppression of pulsating torque ultimately relies on an orchestrated systems approach to all aspects of the PMAC machine and controller design which often requires a carefully selected combination of minimization techniques.

Pulsating torque minimization techniques for permanent magnet AC motor drives-a review

In this paper, the authors present an extended survey on the evolution and the modern approaches in the thermal analysis of electrical machines. The improvements and the new techniques proposed in the last decade are analyzed in depth and compared in order to highlight the qualities and defects of each. In particular, thermal analysis based on lumped-parameter thermal network, finite-element analysis, and computational fluid dynamics are considered in this paper. In addition, an overview of the problems linked to the thermal parameter determination and computation is proposed and discussed. Taking into account the aims of this paper, a detailed list of books and papers is reported in the references to help researchers interested in these topics.

Evolution and Modern Approaches for Thermal Analysis of Electrical Machines

A method of increasing the power output of existing permanent magnet motors along with apparatus is disclosed. Increased power output is achieved by more completely utilizing the magnetic field of motor permanent magnets during running. The apparatus is external to the motor and therefore eliminates the need for modifications to the motor itself. The method involves providing a source of power to a permanent magnet motor which is capable of demagnetizing the motor permanent magnets at stall, and reducing the power at start up to a level sufficient to prevent demagnetization. Full power to the motor is provided when the motor speed reaches a level sufficient to prevent demagnetization of the permanent magnets.

Methods and apparatus for increasing power of permanent magnet motors

This report presents a survey on generator concepts and power electronic concepts for wind turbines. The report is aimed as a tool for decision-makers and development people with respect to wind turbine manufactures, utilities, and independent system operators as well as manufactures of generators and power electronics. The survey is focused on the electric development of wind turbines and it yields an overview on: State of the art on generators and power electronics; future concepts and technologies within generators and power electronics; market needs in the shape of requirements to the grid connection, and; consistent system solutions, plus an evaluation of these seen in the prospect of market needs. This survey on of generator and power electronic concepts was carried out in co-operation between Aalborg University and Risoe National Laboratory in the scope of the research programme Electric Design and Control. We develop an analytical model for predicting the eddy-current loss in the rotor magnets of permanent-magnet brushless machines that have a fractional number of slots per pole, when either all the teeth or only alternate teeth are wound, and in which the unwound teeth may be narrower than the wound teeth The model enables the magnetic field distribution in the air gap and magnet regions to be determined, by neglecting the eddy-current redistribution effect and assuming that the eddy currents are resistance limited It can account for space-harmonic magnetomotive forces (MMFs) resulting from the winding distribution and time-harmonic MMFs due to nonsinusoidal phase currents, as well as for the effect of curvature and circumferential segmentation of the magnets We have validated the model by finite-element analysis, and used it to investigate the eddy-current loss in the magnets of three surface-mounted magnet brushless motors that have similar slot and pole numbers, and employ identical rotors but different stators, when they are operated in brushless ac (BLAC) and dc (BLDC) modes We show that the stator winding configuration, as well as the operational mode, significantly influence the resultant eddy-current loss

Design of Brushless Permanent-Magnet Machines

This article presents four different slot/pole configurations to select the best slot/pole for a traction application with a wide speed range. The electromagnetic performances are improved for the selected slot/pole configuration. This paper presents a modified spoke type rotor that significantly reduces the torque ripple, back electromagnetic force (EMF) harmonics, and cogging torque from conventional spoke type designs. The effectiveness of the modified spoke type rotor is proved with state-of-the-art designs such as Toyota Prius and Honda Accord motors. Along with the modified spoke type rotor it focuses on a segmented soft magnetic composite (SMC) stator core to improve the copper fill factor and improve torque density by reducing the tooth length to allow additional space for the end windings within the stack length of the motor. A comparison between the laminated steel stator and SMC stator is presented. The laminated motor is capable of producing higher torque than the SMC motor when both machines are designed to operate with the same temperature, though the torque density in terms of volume of SMC motor is higher than the laminated motor. In all cases, the machines are designed to fit into the same frame. A cost comparison has been presented between the SMC and laminated motors, which proves that the SMC motors can be manufactured much cheaper than the laminated motors. Also, SMC stator design presents axial magnet segmentation, optimal flux weakening, thermal analysis, stator stress analysis due to electromagnetic forces, and a rotor mechanical stress analysis.
