Rethinking reinforcement for digital fabrication with concrete

TL;DR: This paper provides a systematic overview of a number of digital fabrication techniques using reinforced concrete that have been developed so far, proposing a possible organization by structural principle, or place in the manufacturing process.
Journal ArticleDOI

Automated crack detection and measurement based on digital image correlation

TL;DR: In this article, a fully automated procedure to detect cracks and measure crack kinematics in laboratory experiments instrumented with digital image correlation (DIC) is presented, where cracks are extracted using well-established image processing methods showing excellent agreement with the physical crack pattern.
Journal ArticleDOI

Opportunities and challenges for structural engineering of digitally fabricated concrete

TL;DR: This paper provides a systematic overview of a number of DFC structural projects developed thus far and a comprehensive discussion about structural engineering details is provided, addressing the related fundamental structural issues and envisioning opportunities and challenges toward achieving the full potential of D FC.
Journal ArticleDOI

Structural behaviour of 3D printed concrete beams with various reinforcement strategies

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present an experimental investigation consisting of nine four-point bending tests on extrusion 3DCP beams reinforced with various types of reinforcement. And they show that the post-tensioned beams failed in a brittle manner due to the crushing of concrete in bending, with deformations localised in a few bending cracks.
Journal ArticleDOI

Eggshell: Ultra-Thin Three-Dimensional Printed Formwork for Concrete Structures

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a method to shape concrete structures, using heavy-duty form-fitting concrete materials, which is a material favored by architects and builders alike due to its high structural strength and its ability to take almost any form.
