Ballistic and Impact Protective System for Military Helmet Assembly

: Since the l970s, the trend in Army aviation has been to rely on helmet-mounted displays (HMDs) to provide the aircrew with pilotage imagery, flight information, and fire control imagery and symbology. This paper is intended to serve as both a checklist and a guide for designers of future integrated helmet and display systems for rotary-wing aircraft. In this paper: 1) salient performance parameters of such systems are identified; 2) recommendations for values of these parameters are suggested, based on past research and the opinions of subject matter experts; 3) an analysis of potential health and safety hazards is provided; 4) a human factors engineering assessment (HFEA) is provided; and 5)lessons learned from previously fielded U.S. Army HMD systems are summarized. However, this paper is not a cookbook for building an integrated helmet and display system.

Design Issues for Helmet-Mounted Display Systems for Rotary-Wing Aviation.

A helmet-mounted night vision system that is compact, light in weight and ejection-safe. The system incorporates a night vision goggles apparatus for receiving incoming infrared and/or visible light from a viewed object and for converting the incoming light to an intensified visible light for presentation to an eye of a user, a visor mounted to a helmet to be worn by the user and adapted to be positioned in front of the night vision goggles apparatus, and connecting structure for connecting the visor to the night vision goggles apparatus for retaining the visor in position in front of the night vision goggles apparatus. By ensuring that the visor is safely retained in front of and substantially fully covers the goggles apparatus at all times, the system of the invention is rendered ejection-safe. The system also provides the user with numerous other structural and operational advantages.

Helmet-mounted night vision system and secondary imager

A pilot's ensemble provides protection against cold water immersion and hostile threats, such as chemical and biological agents, while minimizing bulk and weight of the ensemble and impacts to and burdens on the pilot. The ensemble includes a garment (40) having an outer shell (14) impermeable to liquids and gases and a lining (58) bonded to an inner surface of a torso portion of the shell (14). Air is supplied to the lining (58) through a ventilation port (42) to control body temperature. Ensemble headgear includes a helmet (76) with upper and lower pairs of mounting members (78, 80, 82, 84). A permeable hood (70) is worn under the helmet (76) and has chemical vapor absorbing neck portions. A breathing mask (92) is removably attachable to the lower pair of mounting members (82, 84). Goggles (96) are removably attachable to the upper pair (78, 80). The goggles (96) seal the ocular cavity of the pilot and overlap the mask (92) and hood (70) to completely cover the pilot's face. A passageway (86) in the helmet (76) routes inflowing air to the goggles (96) to prevent fogging and maintain pressurization of the ocular cavity to prevent inboard leakage. Elements of the ensemble are selectively doffable in flight.

Pilot's ensemble with integrated threat protection

A pair of rail adapters which replace visor rails used on the U.S. Army Ahe helmets, i.e. the AH-64 helmet. The rail adapters have a concave inner portion that is form fitted and attachable to the Apache helmet, with one rail adapter on each of the right and left upper front sides of the Apache helmet. The rail adapters have a convex outer portion that interface and is attachable with a visor guard Aviator's Night Vision Imaging System (ANVIS) goggle assembly and visor which are normally used with the U.S. Army ANVIS helmet, i.e. the SPH-4 helmet. Each of the rail adapters is made in one piece which has a thick upper portion with a half dovetailed open track in which the outer portion of the visor guard is attachable thereto. The rail adapters have a thin lower portion which provides clearance with the visor and the ANVIS goggle assembly when the visor and the assembly are in the line of sight position.

This technique is based on the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) theory and human visual psychophysical data. The rationale for the technique is discussed from a theoretical as well as functional viewpoint. The instrumentation necessary to obtain these measures in manual and automatic modes is discussed. Data obtained using this measurement technique are analyzed and compared with the theoretical performance of the displays. The image quality of new CRT displays procured for the U.S. Army's Advanced Attack Helicopter is being specified and tested using this direct measuring technique. (Author)

Yet, a comprehensive basis for specifying televi-sion display image quality which relates to human operator performance parameters has notevolved even though numerous studies have investigated various facets of this specificationproblem during the past thirty years.This specification problem is directly related to the lack of standardization in displayperformance metrics. Currently, no universally acceptable technique exists for analyzingtelevision display system quality. Each manufacturer establishes his own test, measurement,and evaluation procedures.The lack of standardization in measurement techniques makes it virtually impossible toestablish comprehensive performance specifications. Presumably, television display manufac-turers publish specifications so prospective buyers can evaluate this data before selectinga particular unit for their needs. But, it is difficult to find a common denominator sothat one can compare units built by various manufacturers on the basis of performance.Many techniques were tried during the late 1960's and early 1970's to measure the imagequality of the miniature CRT's. In the mid 1970's a new technique was developed at theAerospace Medical Research Laboratory (AMRL), Wright- Patterson Air Force Base./ The U.S.Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory, Fort Rucker, Alabama, U.S. Army Night Vision and Elec-tro- Optics Laboratory, Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and Honeywell, Inc., have continued to useand refine the techniques developed at AMRL. The evolved procedures and caveats for apply-ing the measuring technique to miniature as well as panel- mounted CRT displays are presentedin detail. BackgroundThe resolution of optical elements has been measured for years by means of two- dimension-al bar patterns with various spacings and angular arrangements. The optical element underinvestigation forms an image of the bar pattern, and the observer subjectively determinesthe limiting resolution from the smallest set of bars he can resolve. With this type oftest, it is possible to determine only a subjective maximum resolution. This resolutionmeasure provides information about only a single spatial frequency. How the display oper-ates at other spatial frequencies is not determined. Also, there is too much variabilityin this method of measurement for it to be used as a basis for setting specifications.
