A Response to: Letter to the Editor Regarding “Neurophysiological Assessments During Continuous Sedation Until Death Put Validity of Observational Assessments Into Question: A Prospective Observational Study”
Stefaan Six,Jan Poelaert,Steven Laureys,Olivier Mairesse,Peter Theuns,Johan Bilsen,Reginald Deschepper +6 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that the validity of observational assessments in this particular patient group needs to be further scrutinized, and the traditionally used observation scales, as well as clinical assessments, mainly reside on inferences from the patient’s responsiveness and may therefore not be entirely reliable.
Commentary Myocardial Doppler velocities as a marker of prognosis in the
C Roosens,Jan Poelaert +1 more
TL;DR: The present study retrospectively analyzed a series of data in critically ill patients with respect to myocardial Doppler imaging as part of a general echocardiographic examination and concluded the important prognostic value of left ventricular end-systolic volume, related with outcome.

2 Two-dimensional imaging and related indications
Gert Poortmans,Jan Poelaert +1 more
TL;DR: This chapter describes how different two-dimensional images can be obtained, presents a summary of the anatomical and functional information available in those images and relates this information to the clinical questions which form the indications to perform TOE.
Journal ArticleDOI
Educating anaesthetists on neuromuscular monitoring: the challenges continue.
Jan Poelaert,Jennifer M. Hunter +1 more
TL;DR: The need to introduce guidelines on neuromuscular monitoring emphasising the use of quantitative techniques that record the train-of-four ratio is now recognised by an increasing number of national anaesthetic societies in the Western world as discussed by the authors .
