Basics of qualitative research: Grounded theory procedures and techniques

Erik Eriksen is a remarkable individual. He has no college degrees yet is Professor of Human Development at Harvard University. He came to psychology via art, which explains why the reader will find him painting contexts and backgrounds rather than stating dull facts and concepts. He has been a training psychoanalyst for many years as well as a perceptive observer of cultural and social settings and their effect on growing up. This is not just a book on childhood. It is a panorama of our society. Anxiety in young children, apathy in American Indians, confusion in veterans of war, and arrogance in young Nazis are scrutinized under the psychoanalytic magnifying glass. The material is well written and devoid of technical jargon. The theme of the volume is that it is human to have a long childhood which will leave a lifelong residue of emotional immaturity in man. material change surface in several occasions along the volume. By saying this, am I conceding too much to the myth of ‘primitive purity’, or acknowledging the ‘good savage’/‘bad savage’ dichotomy? I do not believe so. To say that the goods and techniques brought by colonisers had effects on the colonised does not amount to saying that the colonised were perverted or depraved in the process. Social change does not mean depravation, transformation does not mean ‘impurity’. These points are also part of Dousset’s argument. Minimizing the impact of technologies and goods contributes to proving this point, albeit partially. Mythes, missiles et cannibales raises interesting questions. It would be good to find more detailed accounts of how social structures take advantage of material parameters: What is modified and how? How do local actors perceive material benefits and needs in colonial situations? To which extend were colonizers aware of the social consequences of their technological input? Did Australian colonial governments and missions manipulate these factors consciously, rather than blindly provide goods in a bid to obtain power, or avoid doing so in the fear of perverting ‘noble savages’? In conclusion,Mythes, missiles et cannibales is an important critical contribution to our understanding of colonial interactions, in Australia and elsewhere, and it would be good to see Dousset’s volume translated into English. Dousset clearly articulates and deconstructs colonial ideology, connecting it with historical facts. With respect to this deconstruction, the book opens up important questions to be addressed in future research.

Dr. Angela Y. Davis is a political activist, academician, and writer who has navigated and discussed issues of race, class, gender, and USA social policies across her 75 years of life. Davis’s activism established her as the icon of a larger social movement and further related to her decision-making and legacy. Using psychobiographical methods, data were gathered through publicly available sources to explore Davis’s personal, professional, and representational life, as well as understand Davis’s lived experience through a socio-cultural-historical perspective. Two established theories, Social Cognitive Career Theory and Politicized Collective Identity model, were applied to Davis’s life. Findings suggested that in addition to her unique intersectional identities, a confluence of factors including growing up in a family of activists, incarceration, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) surveillance, Communist Party involvement, marginalization within activist spaces, and practicing radical self-care impacted Davis committing to a life as an activist, academic, and the leader of a social movement.

The Work of a Revolutionary: A Psychobiography and Careerography of Angela Y. Davis

An integrated healthcare model incorporates behavioral health services into a medical setting to address patients’ physical, emotional, and behavioral healthcare concerns. The integrated healthcare model has been associated with positive patient satisfaction and health outcomes, yet limited studies have examined, using qualitative methods, physicians’ experiences of working alongside behavioral health consultants (BHCs) in integrated healthcare settings. Data was gathered through semi-structured interviews with pediatricians (N=4) working in an integrated healthcare model. Participants shared that as pediatricians they received personal, educational, and organizational benefits from an integrated healthcare model. Pediatricians also reported increased knowledge in effectively addressing mental health concerns for their patients and decreased physician stress-levels. Results of pediatricians’ experiences working in an integrated healthcare setting are discussed with regard to their implications for clinical practice and research.
