The directional development of intermodal freight corridors in relation to inland terminals

TL;DR: In this article, two concepts of vertical control of the development process are proposed in this paper, beginning with Inside-Out, whereby inland intermodal terminals seek greater integration with their sea ports, often driven by public body intervention; Outside-In development is displayed by the conscious use of an inland node as a tool for sea port actors (whether port authorities or terminal operators) to expand their hinterland and capture discretionary cargo.
Journal ArticleDOI

Giving a direction to port regionalisation

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore port regionalisation in different contexts through a greater focus on the drivers and direction of a number of inland terminal development strategies, revealing different levels of integration and cooperation observed in different location splitting models.
Journal ArticleDOI

Identifying the unique challenges of installing cold ironing at small and medium ports – The case of aberdeen

TL;DR: In this article, the feasibility of cold ironing in a medium sized port with several small berths, based on the case of Aberdeen, was examined and the substantial external cost benefits would return the system capital and operating costs in only 7.0 years, or 3.5 years if subsidised 50% by the EU.
Journal ArticleDOI

Port geography at the crossroads with human geography: between flows and spaces

Journal ArticleDOI

A global review of the hinterland dimension of green port strategies

TL;DR: In this article, a review of ports across the globe to identify which ports have implemented measures to improve the environmental performance of hinterland transport is presented, showing that only 76 out of 365 ports examined are doing so.
