This special issue includes eight original works that detail the further developments of ELMs in theories, applications, and hardware implementation. In "Representational Learning with ELMs for Big Data," Liyanaarachchi Lekamalage Chamara Kasun, Hongming Zhou, Guang-Bin Huang, and Chi Man Vong propose using the ELM as an auto-encoder for learning feature representations using singular values. In "A Secure and Practical Mechanism for Outsourcing ELMs in Cloud Computing," Jiarun Lin, Jianping Yin, Zhiping Cai, Qiang Liu, Kuan Li, and Victor C.M. Leung propose a method for handling large data applications by outsourcing to the cloud that would dramatically reduce ELM training time. In "ELM-Guided Memetic Computation for Vehicle Routing," Liang Feng, Yew-Soon Ong, and Meng-Hiot Lim consider the ELM as an engine for automating the encapsulation of knowledge memes from past problem-solving experiences. In "ELMVIS: A Nonlinear Visualization Technique Using Random Permutations and ELMs," Anton Akusok, Amaury Lendasse, Rui Nian, and Yoan Miche propose an ELM method for data visualization based on random permutations to map original data and their corresponding visualization points. In "Combining ELMs with Random Projections," Paolo Gastaldo, Rodolfo Zunino, Erik Cambria, and Sergio Decherchi analyze the relationships between ELM feature-mapping schemas and the paradigm of random projections. In "Reduced ELMs for Causal Relation Extraction from Unstructured Text," Xuefeng Yang and Kezhi Mao propose combining ELMs with neuron selection to optimize the neural network architecture and improve the ELM ensemble's computational efficiency. In "A System for Signature Verification Based on Horizontal and Vertical Components in Hand Gestures," Beom-Seok Oh, Jehyoung Jeon, Kar-Ann Toh, Andrew Beng Jin Teoh, and Jaihie Kim propose a novel paradigm for hand signature biometry for touchless applications without the need for handheld devices. Finally, in "An Adaptive and Iterative Online Sequential ELM-Based Multi-Degree-of-Freedom Gesture Recognition System," Hanchao Yu, Yiqiang Chen, Junfa Liu, and Guang-Bin Huang propose an online sequential ELM-based efficient gesture recognition algorithm for touchless human-machine interaction.

Smartphone users have their own unique behavioral patterns when tapping on the touch screens These personal patterns are reflected on the different rhythm, strength, and angle preferences of the applied force Since smart phones are equipped with various sensors like accelerometer, gyroscope, and touch screen sensors, capturing a user's tapping behaviors can be done seamlessly Exploiting the combination of four features (acceleration, pressure, size, and time) extracted from smart phone sensors, we propose a non-intrusive user verification mechanism to substantiate whether an authenticating user is the true owner of the smart phone or an impostor who happens to know the pass code Based on the tapping data collected from over 80 users, we conduct a series of experiments to validate the efficacy of our proposed system Our experimental results show that our verification system achieves high accuracy with averaged equal error rates of down to 365% As our verification system can be seamlessly integrated with the existing user authentication mechanisms on smart phones, its deployment and usage are transparent to users and do not require any extra hardware support

You Are How You Touch: User Verification on Smartphones via Tapping Behaviors

Designing reliable user authentication on mobile phones is becoming an increasingly important task to protect users' private information and data. Since biometric approaches can provide many advantages over the traditional authentication methods, they have become a significant topic for both academia and industry. The major goal of biometric user authentication is to authenticate legitimate users and identify impostors based on physiological and behavioral characteristics. In this paper, we survey the development of existing biometric authentication techniques on mobile phones, particularly on touch-enabled devices, with reference to 11 biometric approaches (five physiological and six behavioral). We present a taxonomy of existing efforts regarding biometric authentication on mobile phones and analyze their feasibility of deployment on touch-enabled mobile phones. In addition, we systematically characterize a generic biometric authentication system with eight potential attack points and survey practical attacks and potential countermeasures on mobile phones. Moreover, we propose a framework for establishing a reliable authentication mechanism through implementing a multimodal biometric user authentication in an appropriate way. Experimental results are presented to validate this framework using touch dynamics, and the results show that multimodal biometrics can be deployed on touch-enabled phones to significantly reduce the false rates of a single biometric system. Finally, we identify challenges and open problems in this area and suggest that touch dynamics will become a mainstream aspect in designing future user authentication on mobile phones.

Surveying the Development of Biometric User Authentication on Mobile Phones

Automated emotion recognition (AEE) is an important issue in various fields of activities which use human emotional reactions as a signal for marketing, technical equipment, or human–robot interaction. This paper analyzes scientific research and technical papers for sensor use analysis, among various methods implemented or researched. This paper covers a few classes of sensors, using contactless methods as well as contact and skin-penetrating electrodes for human emotion detection and the measurement of their intensity. The results of the analysis performed in this paper present applicable methods for each type of emotion and their intensity and propose their classification. The classification of emotion sensors is presented to reveal area of application and expected outcomes from each method, as well as their limitations. This paper should be relevant for researchers using human emotion evaluation and analysis, when there is a need to choose a proper method for their purposes or to find alternative decisions. Based on the analyzed human emotion recognition sensors and methods, we developed some practical applications for humanizing the Internet of Things (IoT) and affective computing systems.

Analysis of pattern recognition techniques for in-air signature biometrics

This article proposes an innovative biometric technique based on the idea of authenticating a person on a mobile device by gesture recognition. To accomplish this aim, a user is prompted to be recognized by a gesture he/she performs moving his/her hand while holding a mobile device with an accelerometer embedded. As users are not able to repeat a gesture exactly in the air, an algorithm based on sequence alignment is developed to correct slight differences between repetitions of the same gesture. The robustness of this biometric technique has been studied within 2 different tests analyzing a database of 100 users with real falsifications. Equal Error Rates of 2.01 and 4.82% have been obtained in a zero-effort and an active impostor attack, respectively. A permanence evaluation is also presented from the analysis of the repetition of the gestures of 25 users in 10 sessions over a month. Furthermore, two different gesture databases have been developed: one made up of 100 genuine identifying 3-D hand gestures and 3 impostors trying to falsify each of them and another with 25 volunteers repeating their identifying 3-D hand gesture in 10 sessions over a month. These databases are the most extensive in published studies, to the best of our knowledge.

Real-Time Stress Detection by Means of Physiological Signals

This paper presents a hand biometric system for contact-less, platform-free scenarios, proposing innovative methods in feature extraction, template creation and template matching. The evaluation of the proposed method considers both the use of three contact-less publicly available hand databases, and the comparison of the performance to two competitive pattern recognition techniques existing in literature: namely Support Vector Machines (SVM) and k-Nearest Neighbour (k-NN). Results highlight the fact that the proposed method outcomes existing approaches in literature in terms of computational cost, accuracy in human identification, number of extracted features and number of samples for template creation. The proposed method is a suitable solution for human identification in contact-less scenarios based on hand biometrics, providing a feasible solution to devices with limited hardware requirements like mobile devices.

Keystroke dynamics biometrics through computers are based in the time that users need to press and hold keys and often present too small amount of information. This limitation is eliminated in the environment of mobile devices due to a variety of sensors (accelerometers, gyroscopes, pressure and finger size) can be used to acquire useful information from users. These data have been acquired within the scenario of typing a 4-digit PIN in order to analyze the possibilites of reinforcing the security of mobile devices. A database with keystroke dynamics patterns has been analysed. Data has been acquired in a constrained environment, where users must hold the phone in a fixed position, and other with the data taken in unconstrained conditions. Features as pressure, finger size, times, linear an angular acceleration are extracted and processed. Supervised classification methods are widely used in different kind of biometrics. A discussion about their use in keystroke biometrics is presented. A preprocessing of the acquired data is performed using Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and a reduction of the amount of information applying Principal Components Analysis (PCA). This preprocessing enhances considerably the results obtained in classification. We conclude claiming that biometric systems through keystroke dynamics with 4-digit PIN are promising.
