The term nonlinear optics (NLO) was coined to describe the nonlinear relationship between dielectric polarization P and electric field E in optical media. NLO is a cornerstone of the emerging field of photonics, in which photons instead of electrons are used for signal transmission and processing. The vision of photonic signal transmission, processing, and storage has attracted a great deal of attention from both the engineering and the scientific communities because of its great impact in many of the existing and future information technologies. The first step toward realization of these revolutionary technologies is to develop tools to manipulate photons. For example, it is desirable to develop materials with the ability to alter the frequency of light, to amplify light signal, and to modulate light intensity or phase factors. NLO phenomena can be the key to achieving these important functions. One of the most common NLO behaviors is second-harmonic generation (SHG), in which a NLO material mediates the “adding-up” of two photons to form a new one with twice the frequency. The SHGphenomenonwas first demonstrated by Franken et al. in 1961. In their pioneering work, a laser beam with a wavelength of 694.2 nm was irradiated through a quartz crystal and an output ultraviolet radiation with a wavelength of 347.1 nm (double frequency) was detected. After this discovery, numerous nonlinear optical phenomena have been studied and a number of NLO-active materials have been developed. Second-harmonic generation can be quantitatively described by the second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility χ, a third-rank tensor with 27 components. The tensor elements are related to each other tomeet the requirements of both inherent and structural symmetries, which greatly reduces the number of independent components of the susceptibility tensor. Only crystals in noncentrosymmetric crystal classes can have nonvanishing χ. Moreover, for material crystallizing in the noncentrosymmetric 422, 622, and 432 crystal classes, the second-order NLO response might also vanish due to structural symmetry as well as Kleinman’s symmetry. Many inorganic compounds crystallize in noncentrosymmetric space groups and have been found to be SHG active. Some important examples are potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP = KH2PO4), lithium niobate (LiNbO3), and barium sodium niobate (Ba2NaNb5O15). 7 New inorganic compounds have been explored for NLO applications including but not limited to metal borates 12 and metal oxides. Recent structural studies on the inorganic systems have led to a better understanding of crystal growth/packing, paving the way for potentially manipulating their crystallization tendency to form noncentrosymmetric structures. Since the 1970s molecular NLO materials, including organic, organometallic, and inorganic complexes, have been of increasing interest to synthetic chemists. 19 The existing library of organic compounds was first screened, and the urea crystal has become a SHG standard because of its high SHG efficiency and usual availability. In a microscopic view, the second-order NLO susceptibility χ is related to the first hyperpolarizability β of a molecule. According to the classical two-level model, β is enhanced by a large transition moment and a large dipole moment difference between the ground and the charge transfer excited state. A donor acceptor type of molecule often possesses both a large transition moment and a large excited state dipole moment. As a result, most of the organic SHG chromophors belong to this category. However, most of the molecules with large β values also possess a large dipole moment, which induces formation of centrosymmetric assemblies of molecules due to dipole dipole interactions. One of the methods to avoid the centrosymmetric alignment of molecular dipoles is to trap them inside the channels of asymmetric porous host structures. 28 Other methods include formation of poled polymers in which the required asymmetry is imposed by the external electric field 35 and the Langmuir Blodgett (LB)

Rational synthesis of noncentrosymmetric metal-organic frameworks for second-order nonlinear optics.

The development of nonlinear optical (NLO) materials has been driven by a multitude of important technological applications that can be realized if suitable materials are available 1–15. Future generations of optoelectronic devices for telecommunications, information storage, optical switching, and signal processing are predicted to a large degree on the development of materials with exceptional NLO responses 1–15. A large number of organic π-conjugated molecules have been investigated in the last thirty years for suitability to function as components in hypothetical NLO materials 1–19. Several books and reviews have appeared dealing with theory of nonlinear optics and the structural characteristics and applications of nonlinear optical molecules and materials 1–19. Truly, all-optical NLO effects were not discovered until the discovery of lasers. Second-harmonic generation (SHG) was first observed in a single crystal of quartz by Franken et.al. 20 in 1961. Parametric amplification was observed in lithium niobate (LiNbO3) by two-wave mixing in temperature-tuned single crystals 21. Rentzepis and Pao 22 made the first observation of SHG in an organic material, benzpyrene, in 1964. Heilmeir examined hexamethylenetetramine single crystal SHG in the same year 24. Two other organic materials followed rapidly: hippuric acid and benzil 25. Benzil was the first material that proved relatively easy to grow into large single crystals. Over the last two decades the study of nonlinear optical process in organic and polymer systems has enjoyed rapid and sustained growth 1–19, 25–39. One indication of the growth is the increase in the number of articles published in refereed society journals, as one can find from web of science 25, SCIFINDER 26 and Scopus 27 search. The four years period 1980–1983 saw the publication of 124 such articles. In the next four years period 1984–1987, the production of articles increased to 736 (nearly six times). From 1988–1992, the number of articles increased to more than 4000 25–27. In the last decade, academia, industry and government laboratories have been working in this field to replace electronics by photonics and as a result, the number of publications has reached more than 70,000 25–27.

The rapid growth of the field is mainly due to the technological promise of these materials 1–19, 28–37. Traditionally, the materials used to measure second-order NLO behavior were inorganic crystals, such as lithium niobate (LiNbO3) and potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP). The optical nonlinearity in these materials is to a large extent caused by the nuclear displacement in an applied electric field, and to a smaller extent by the movement of the electrons 1–10. This limits the bandwidth of the modulator. Organic materials have a number of advantages over inorganic materials for NLO applications 28–35. The ease of modification of organic molecular structures makes it possible to synthesize tailor-made molecules and to fine-tune the properties for the desired application 28–35. Unfortunately, not all organic materials display second-order NLO properties. At the molecular level, they need to be non-centrosymmetric. A large number of organic π-conjugated molecules have been investigated 1–9, 28–35 in the last twenty years. The outcome of the results has helped to establish certain guidelines for molecular design to get good second order NLO materials. However, roughly more than 80% of all π-conjugated organic molecules crystallize in centro-symmetric space groups 1–19, therefore producing materials with no second order bulk susceptibility. To overcome this limitation, organic NLO material doped or covalently attached in polymers, have been introduced by Dalton et. al 5,6,16,38–39. A few of these chromophores have served as components of functioning polymer-based optoelectronic devices; the physical properties of all these prototype materials possess one or more critical deficiencies that render commercialization of these systems impractical 28–39. These facts suggest that new types of molecular design are necessary if significant advances are to be realized.

From 1998 onwards, researchers started effort on developing various nanomaterials, with high second order NLO properties and seeking for their applications in photonics as well as chemical and biological detection 40–106. The surface-enhanced phenomenon is predicted to have a particularly important impact in nonlinear optical NLO applications, since the generally weak nonlinear effects can be significantly increased via strong electromagnetic fields at the surfaces of metallic nanostructures 60–129. NLO based sensing have provided great potentials and opportunities for detecting different environmental toxins that exhibit some specific advantages, compared to other conventional and nanomaterial based techniques. Aim of this review is mainly to summarize and evaluate the achievements in development of nanoparticle based second order NLO materials with different sizes and shapes and it will focus on the following three major issues: (i) design of novel NLO active materials using nanoparticles (ii) nonlinear optical properties of single nanoparticle, nanoparticle aggregates and self assembly, and (iii) applications in chemical and biological sensing.

Materials chemistry and the pursuit of new compounds through exploratory synthesis are having a strong impact in many technological fields. The field of nonlinear optics is directly impacted by the availability of enabling materials with high performance. Nonlinear optical (NLO) phenomena such as second harmonic and difference frequency generation (SHG and DFG, respectively) are effective at producing a coherent laser beam in difficult to reach frequency regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Such regions include the infrared (IR), far-infrared, and terahertz frequencies. High performance NLO crystals are critical for applications utilizing these coherent light sources, and new materials are continuously sought for better conversion efficiency and performance. The class of metal chalcogenides is the most promising source of potential NLO materials with desirable properties particularly in the IR region where most classes of materials face various fundamental challenges. Metal Chalcogenides: A Rich Source of Nonlinear Optical Materials

A new noncentrosymmetric (NCS) and polar material containing two lone-pair cations, Bi3+ and I5+, and exhibiting an Aurivillius-type (Bi2O2)2+ layer has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The material, BiO(IO3), exhibits strong second-harmonic generation (SHG), ∼12.5 × KDP (or ∼500 × α-SiO2), using 1064 nm radiation, and is found in the NCS polar orthorhombic space group Pca21 (No. 29). The structure consists of (Bi2O2)2+ cationic layers that are connected to (IO3)− anions. The macroscopic polarity, observed along the c-axis direction, may be attributed to the alignment of the IO3 polyhedra. In addition to the crystal structure and SHG measurements, polarization and piezoelectric measurements were performed, as well as electronic structure analysis.

A new series of alkaline-alkaline earth fluoride carbonates (KSrCO(3)F, RbSrCO(3)F, KCaCO(3)F, RbCaCO(3)F, CsCaCO(3)F, and Cs(3)Ba(4)(CO(3))(3)F(5)) were synthesized by spontaneous crystallization with molten fluxes. Their crystal structures, except for Cs(3)Ba(4)(CO(3))(3)F(5), exhibit the stacking of [AF](∞) (A = K, Rb, Cs) and [B(CO(3))](∞) (B = Ca, Sr) layers, and the coplanar alignment of [CO(3)] triangles. The results from the UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy study of the powder samples indicated that the short-wavelength absorption edges were all below 200 nm, except for Cs(3)Ba(4)(CO(3))(3)F(5), which is about 210 nm. Second-harmonic generation (SHG) on polycrystalline samples was measured using the Kurtz and Perry technique, which indicated that these carbonates are all phase-matchable materials in both visible and the UV region, and their measured SHG coefficients were about 3.33, 3.33, 3.61, 1.11, 1.11, and 1.20 times as large as that of d(36) (KDP), respectively.

Alkaline-alkaline earth fluoride carbonate crystals ABCO3F (A = K, Rb, Cs; B = Ca, Sr, Ba) as nonlinear optical materials.

By combination of Nb5+ (having a d0 electronic configuration) and the lone-pair-containing iodate anion, a new SHG material, BaNbO(IO3)5, has been prepared. It exhibits a very large SHG response (∼14 times that of KH2PO4 and ∼660 times that of α-SiO2) and is phase-matchable. The material has high thermal stability and a wide transparent region.
