Nanofilled polymeric matrices have demonstrated remarkable mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. In this article we review the processing of carbon nanotube, graphene, and clay montmorillonite platelet as potential nanofillers to form nanocomposites. The various functionalization techniques of modifying the nanofillers to enable interaction with polymers are summarized. The importance of filler dispersion in the polymeric matrix is highlighted. Finally, the challenges and future outlook for nanofilled polymeric composites are presented.

Inhibition of copper corrosion by 1,2,3-benzotriazole: A review

Organic/inorganic hybrid lead halide perovskites are promising optoelectronic materials due to their unique structure, excellent properties, and fascinating potential applications in lighting, photovoltaic, etc. However, perovskite materials are very sensitive to moisture and polar solvent, which greatly hinders their practical applications. Here, highly luminescent perovskite–polystyrene composite beads with uniform morphology are prepared via a simple swelling–shrinking strategy. This process is carried out only in nonpolar toluene and hexane without the addition of any polar reagents. As a result, the as-prepared composite beads not only retain high luminescence but also exhibit superior water-resistant property. The composites emit strong luminescence after being immersed into water over nine months. Moreover, even in some harsh environments such as acid/alkali aqueous solution, phosphate buffer solution, and Dulbecco's modified eagle medium biological buffers, they still preserve high luminescence. The applications in light-emitting diodes and cellular labeling agents are also carried out to demonstrate their ultrastability.

Chemisorption of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole onto a chemically cleaned surface of metallic copper from its ethanol solution has been investigated by the use of surface-enhanced Raman scattering, X-ray-induced Auger spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy. 2-Mercaptobenzimidazole reacts directly with metallic copper to form copper 2-mercaptobenzimidazolates which covered the surface with a polymeric film. A ring-opening reaction of the epoxy group is induced by the surface material, resulting in significantly improved adhesion of epoxy resin onto copper and iron.

Surface reaction of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole on metals and its application in adhesion promotion

The inhibition of copper corrosion by polybenzimidazole and mercaptobenzimidazole at room and high temperature was assessed by in situ surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). It was found that a very compact protective layer, produced by immersion in polybenzimidazole and mercaptobenzimidazole mixture solutions, showed better anticorrosive performance than each single inhibitor component even at high temperatures. This synergetic effect of the two components was explained by the physico-chemical mechanism of corrosion inhibition of polymeric coatings. Meanwhile, the results implied that the SERS active substrate prepared by the HNO3 etching method was particularly useful for in situ characterization of many problems in high-temperature surface chemistry which otherwise could not be accomplished by the usual SERS active substrates.
