Next-generation of the cellular network will attempt to overcome the limitations of the current Fifth Generation (5G) networks and equip itself to address the challenges which become obvious in the future. Currently, academia and industry have focused their attention on the Sixth Generation (6G) network, which is anticipated to be the next big game-changer in the telecom industry. The outbreak of COVID’19 has made the whole world to opt for virtual meetings, live video interactions ranging from healthcare, business to education. However, we miss an immersive experience due to the lack of supporting technology. Experts have anticipated that starting from the post-pandemic age, the performance requirements of technology for virtual and real-time communication, the rise of several verticals such as industrial automation, robotics, and autonomous driving will increase tremendously, and will skyrocket during the next decade. In this manuscript, we study the latest perspectives and future megatrends that are most likely to drive 6G. Initially, we describe the instances that lead us to the vision of 6G. Later, we narrate some of the use cases and the KPIs essential to meet their performance requirement. Further, we highlight the key requirements of 6G based on contemporary research such as UN sustainability goals, business model, edge intelligence, digital divide, and the trends in machine learning for 6G.

6G Ecosystem: Current Status and Future Perspective

The sixth-generation (6G) wireless communication network is expected to integrate the terrestrial, aerial, and maritime communications into a robust network which would be more reliable, fast, and can support a massive number of devices with ultra-low latency requirements. The researchers around the globe are proposing cutting edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML), quantum communication/quantum machine learning (QML), blockchain, tera-Hertz and millimeter waves communication, tactile Internet, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), small cells communication, fog/edge computing, etc., as the key technologies in the realization of beyond 5G (B5G) and 6G communications. In this article, we provide a detailed overview of the 6G network dimensions with air interface and associated potential technologies. More specifically, we highlight the use cases and applications of the proposed 6G networks in various dimensions. Furthermore, we also discuss the key performance indicators (KPI) for the B5G/6G network, challenges, and future research opportunities in this domain.

The commercial fifth-generation (5G) wireless communications networks have already been deployed with the aim of providing high data rates. However, the rapid growth in the number of smart devices and the emergence of the Internet of Everything (IoE) applications, which require an ultra-reliable and low-latency communication, will result in a substantial burden on the 5G wireless networks. As such, the data rate that could be supplied by 5G networks will unlikely sustain the enormous ongoing data traffic explosion. This has motivated research into continuing to advance the existing wireless networks toward the future generation of cellular systems, known as sixth generation (6G). Therefore, it is essential to provide a prospective vision of the 6G and the key enabling technologies for realizing future networks. To this end, this paper presents a comprehensive review/survey of the future evolution of 6G networks. Specifically, the objective of the paper is to provide a comprehensive review/survey about the key enabling technologies for 6G networks, which include a discussion about the main operation principles of each technology, envisioned potential applications, current state-of-the-art research, and the related technical challenges. Overall, this paper provides useful information for industries and academic researchers and discusses the potentials for opening up new research directions.

Service-aware 6G: An intelligent and open network based on the convergence of communication, computing and caching

Policy information in computer networking today, such as reachability objectives of a controller program running on a Software Defined Network (henceforth referred to as SDN) or Border Gateway Protocol (henceforth referred to as BGP) configurations independently set by autonomous networks, are hard to manage. This is in sharp contrast to the relational data structured in a database that allows easy access. This paper asks why cannot (or how can) we turn network policies into relational data. One difficulty to such an approach is that a policy does not always translate to a definite network snapshot, but rather is fully described only when we include all the possible network states it admits. We propose relational policies that, while capable of representing and manipulating sets of network states in exactly the same way as a single one, form a strong representation system and accurately capture the information in a policy with the usual Structured Query Language (henceforth referred to as SQL) interface. We demonstrate how, like relational database improves application productivity and enables rapid innovation, relational policies allow us to extend the elegant solutions that the database community developed, to mediate multiple data sources in order to address long-standing challenges and new opportunities for autonomous policy making in the distributed networking environment. We also show the feasibility of relational policies by evaluation on synthetic policies and realistic network topologies.

Design and Implementation of a Strong Representation System for Network Policies

Edge computing is a new computing paradigm rising gradually in recent years. Applications, such as object detection, virtual reality and intelligent cameras, often leverage Deep Neural Networks (DNN) inference technology. The traditional paradigm of DNN inference based on cloud suffers from high delay because of the limited bandwidth. From the perspective of service providers, caching DNN models on the edge brings several benefits, such as efficiency, privacy, security, etc.. The problem we concerned in this paper is how to decide the cached models and how to allocate processors of edge servers to reduce the overall system cost. To solve it, we model and study the DNN Model Caching and Processor Allocation (DMCPA) problem, which considers user-perceived delay and energy consumption with limited edge resources. We model it as an integer nonlinear programming (INLP) problem, and prove its NP-Completeness. Since it is considered as a long-term average optimization problem, we leverage the Lyapunov framework to develop a novel online algorithm DMCPA-GS-Online with Gibbs Sampling. We give the theoretical analysis to prove that our algorithm is near-optimal. In experiments, we study the performance of our algorithm and compare it with other baselines. The simulation results with the trace dataset from real world demonstrate the effectiveness and adaptiveness of our algorithm.

An Online Approach for DNN Model Caching and Processor Allocation in Edge Computing

The usage of live streaming services has led to a substantial increase in live video traffic. However, the perceived quality of experience of users is frequently limited by variations in the upstream bandwidth of streamers. To address this issue, several adaptive bitrate (ABR) algorithms have been developed to mitigate bandwidth variations. Nevertheless, the ability of users to enjoy high-quality live streams remains limited. While neural-enhanced approaches, such as super-resolution, offer significant quality improvements, frame-oriented super-resolution leads to excessive inference delay that violates the real-time feature of live streaming. In response, we propose ViChaser, which examines block-oriented super-resolution for live streaming. ViChaser performs neural super-resolution on potential blocks of interest in the media server, corresponding to the user’s viewpoint, and uses online learning to adapt to the dynamic content of the video. Additionally, ViChaser utilizes the Lyapunov framework to efficiently allocate uplink bandwidth for original low-quality live video and high-quality labels. The experimental results demonstrate that ViChaser achieves 1.2–1.5 dB higher video quality in Peak-Signal-to-Noise-Ratio than WebRTC and increases processing speed by 11–16 fps relative to LiveNAS.
