Abiotic transformation and ecotoxicity change of sulfonamide antibiotics in environmental and water treatment processes: A critical review.

Enhanced degradation of sulfamethoxazole by microwave-activated peracetic acid under alkaline condition: Influencing factors and mechanism

Vast progress in semiconductor photocatalysis has been witnessed, while the earth-abundant insulators were seldomly explored. In this work, we exploited insulator BaSO 4 as photocatalyst by constructing a novel branch of insulator-semiconductor heterostructure with the narrow-gap CuS. The finely designed BaSO 4 -CuS heterostructure achieved a tetracycline (TC) degradation pseudo-first-order kinetic constant of 1.4 × 10 −2 min −1 , which was 311, 21 and 18 times higher than that of BaSO 4 , CuS and their physical mixture, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations unraveled that the intense Cu-O covalent interaction created a specific channel for interfacial electrons transfer from semiconductor to insulator. The elevated redox potential of CuS is vital for the accumulation of ·O 2 - and motivation of ·OH, thus remarkedly accelerating TC mineralization. Furthermore, the degradation pathway and intermediates of TC were thoroughly studied through LC-MS. The current work provides new perspectives to harvest visible-light-driven insulator photocatalysts and demonstrates its promising applications for environmental remediation. • An insulator BaSO 4 -based heterostructure was designed and fabricated. • The BaSO 4 -CuS heterostructure exhibited highly enhanced TC mineralization. • The Cu-O covalent interaction created a channel for interfacial charge transfer. • The improved adsorption energy was responsible for superior TC activation. • The elevated photo-redox capacity was beneficial for TC decomposition. 

Activating earth-abundant insulator BaSO4 for visible-light induced degradation of tetracycline

The heterogeneous visible-light driven photo-electro-Fenton (H-VL-PEF) system was built to degrade tetracycline using nitrogen/oxygen biomass self-doped porous carbon (NO/PC) cathode catalyst coupling CuFeO2/biochar particle catalyst. The NO/PC possessed the H2O2 selectivity of 85.3%, and the gas diffusion electrode with NO/PC as cathode catalyst (NO/PC-GDE) exhibited fine H2O2 electrogeneration performance and stability. The generated electrons on CuFeO2/biochar by electrostatic induction and light excitation promoted Fe3+/Fe2+ and Cu2+/Cu+ redox cycle, which was beneficial for HO•/O2•- formation and tetracycline degradation. The introduction of CuFeO2/biochar catalyst and visible light could reduce energy consumption and promote tetracycline mineralization. The CuFeO2/biochar loads, initial pH and current density of H-VL-PEF system were optimized. The degradation pathway of tetracycline was speculated based on the intermediates identified by HPLC/MS. Escherichia coli growth inhibition experiments and toxicity prediction analysis demonstrated that the comprehensive toxicity of tetracycline was alleviated due to the catalytic degradation of H-VL-PEF system. 

Coupling nitrogen/oxygen self-doped biomass porous carbon cathode catalyst with CuFeO2/biochar particle catalyst for the heterogeneous visible-light driven photo-electro-Fenton degradation of tetracycline

Aquatic pollution caused by antibiotics poses a significant threat to human health and the ecosystem. Inspired from "Emmental Cheese" that owns lots of natural pores, we here fabricated a hierarchical cheese-like porous Spirulina residue biochar (KSBC) activated by KHCO3 for efficiently boosting the removal of sulfathiazole (STZ). Through learning form nature that the CO2 produced by bacteria can serve as the natural pore maker (like cheese-making), KHCO3 was thus selected as the gas generating agent in this study. The effect of adding KHCO3 on the surface properties of KSBC was comprehensively investigated. Benefiting from the activation, the KSBC with the mass ratio of 2:1 (2K-SBC) possessed the largest specific surface areas (1100 m2 g-1), which was approximately 81 times that of the original (not activated) Spirulina residue biochar (SBC) (13.56 m2 g-1). Moreover, 2K-SBC exhibited the maximum adsorption capacity for STZ (218.4 mg g-1), dramatically higher than the SBC (25.78 mg g-1). The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms exhibited that the adsorption behavior of 2K-SBC for STZ was consistent with the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models. Additionally, the adsorption thermodynamics revealed that the adsorption of STZ on 2K-SBC was spontaneous and exothermic. The pore-filling and electrostatic interaction were considered the main mechanism for the adsorption of STZ on 2K-SBC, whereas the π-π electron donor-acceptor (EDA) interaction and hydrogen bond would also partially contribute to the adsorption process.
