A magnetic resonance (MR) imaging apparatus and technique exploits spatial information inherent in a surface coil array to increase MR image acquisition speed, resolution and/or field of view. Partial signals are acquired simultaneously in the component coils of the array and formed into two or more signals corresponding to orthogonal spatial representations. In a Fourier embodiment, lines of the k-space matrix required for image production are formed using a set of separate, preferably linear combinations of the component coil signals to substitute for spatial modulations normally produced by phase encoding gradients. The signal combining may proceed in a parallel or flow-through fashion, or as post-processing, which in either case reduces the need for time-consuming gradient switching and expensive fast magnet arrangements. In the post-processing approach, stored signals are combined after the fact to yield the full data matrix. In the flow-through approach, a plug-in unit consisting of a coil array with an on board processor outputs two or more sets of combined spatial signals for each spin conditioning cycle, each directly corresponding to a distinct line in k-space. This partially parallel imaging strategy, dubbed SiMultaneous Acquisition of Spatial Harmonics (SMASH), is readily integrated with many existing fast imaging sequences, yielding multiplicative time savings without a significant sacrifice in spatial resolution or signal-to-noise ratio. An experimental system achieved two-fold improvement in image acquisition time with a prototype three-coil array, and larger factors are achievable with ther coil arrangements.

In-band full-duplex (IBFD) operation has emerged as an attractive solution for increasing the throughput of wireless communication systems and networks. With IBFD, a wireless terminal is allowed to transmit and receive simultaneously in the same frequency band. This tutorial paper reviews the main concepts of IBFD wireless. One of the biggest practical impediments to IBFD operation is the presence of self-interference, i.e., the interference that the modem's transmitter causes to its own receiver. This tutorial surveys a wide range of IBFD self-interference mitigation techniques. Also discussed are numerous other research challenges and opportunities in the design and analysis of IBFD wireless systems.

An improved echo planar high-speed imaging technique using spiral scan is presented and experimental advantages are discussed. This proposed spiral-scan echo planar imaging (SEPI) technique employs two linearly increasing sinusoidal gradient fields, which results in a spiral trajectory in the spatial frequency domain (k-domain) that covers the entire frequency domain uniformly. The advantages of the method are: 1) circularly symmetric T2 weighting, resulting in a circularly symmetric point spread function in the image domain; 2) elimination of discontinuities in gradient waveforms which in turn will reduce initial transient as well as steady-state distortions; and 3) effective rapid spiral-scan from dc to high frequency in a continuous fashion, which ensures multiple pulsing with interlacing for further resolution improvement without T2 decay image degradation. Some preliminary experimental results will be presented and further possible improvements suggested.

High-Speed Spiral-Scan Echo Planar NMR Imaging-I

Biomimetic encapsulation of individual cells with silica.

Quad-robot type (QRT) unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been developed for quick detection and observation of the circumstances under calamity environment such as indoor fire spots. The UAV is equipped with four propellers driven by each electric motor, an embedded controller, an Inertial Navigation System (INS) using three rate gyros and accelerometers, a CCD (Charge Coupled Device) camera with wireless communication transmitter for observation, and an ultrasonic range sensor for height control. Accurate modeling and robust flight control of QRT UAVs are mainly discussed in this work. Rigorous dynamic model of a QRT UAV is obtained both in the reference and body frame coordinate systems. A disturbance observer (DOB) based controller using the derived dynamic models is also proposed for robust hovering control. The control input induced by DOB is helpful to use simple equations of motion satisfying accurately derived dynamics. The developed hovering robot shows stable flying performances under the adoption of DOB and the vision based localization method. Although a model is incorrect, DOB method can design a controller by regarding the inaccurate part of the model and sensor noises as disturbances. The UAV can also avoid obstacles using eight IR (Infrared) and four ultrasonic range sensors. This kind of micro UAV can be widely used in various calamity observation fields without danger of human beings under harmful environment. The experimental results show the performance of the proposed control algorithm.

Accurate Modeling and Robust Hovering Control for a Quad---rotor VTOL Aircraft

Objective: Horizontal head shaking at 2 to 3 Hz can induce nystagmus in patients with central as well as in patients with peripheral vestibulopathy. However, the characteristics and diagnostic value of this post-head-shaking nystagmus (HSN) have not been studied systematically in central vestibulopathy, and little is known of the mechanisms involved. Methods: We analyzed spontaneous and HSN and the effects of baclofen, a GABAB agonist, in 16 patients with acute lateral medullary infarction. Results: These patients showed several characteristics of HSN unlike those observed in peripheral vestibulopathy. HSN was observed in 14 of 16 patients (87.5%), and in all cases, the horizontal component beats toward the lesion side, i.e., was ipsilesional. Even in the eight patients with contralesional spontaneous horizontal nystagmus, the HSN was opposite to the spontaneous nystagmus. Three patients showed unusually strong HSN with a maximum slow-phase velocity greater than 60 degrees/second. Visual fixation markedly suppressed HSN and baclofen reduced HSN. In most of the patients, MRI showed infarctions in the caudal or middle portion of the medulla and spared the rostral portion. Conclusions: We propose that head-shaking nystagmus in lateral medullary infarction is due to unilaterally impaired nodulouvular inhibition of the velocity storage. This proposal is consistent with the results of neuroanatomic studies that demonstrate that Purkinje cells controlling velocity storage in the nodulus and ventral uvula project to the caudal or middle portion of the vestibular nuclei, whereas those subserving visual-vestibular interactions in the flocculus project to the more rostral portion.

Head-shaking nystagmus in lateral medullary infarction Patterns and possible mechanisms

The dynamic stability of a mobile manipulator using ZMP compensation is considered. A unified approach for the two subsystems is formulated using a redundant scheme. First, to conserve the dynamic stability of the system, we define the performance index for the redundant system using the ZMP (zero moment point). This performance index represents the stability of the whole mobile manipulator system. Then, the redundancy resolution problem for optimizing the given performance index is solved using the null motion. Finally, the performance of this method is demonstrated by simulation study.
