Sterne and Machado: Parodic and Intertextual Play in Tristram Shandy and Memórias

Despite apparent connections between Brazilian and Spanish American narratives, comparative scholarship has only recently begun to investigate actively these important points of contact. In this study, we introduce a vital crossover between the two traditions, involving Juan Rulfo and Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis. Rulfo’s outspoken affinity for Brazilian literature, especially his reading of Memorias postumas de Bras Cubas , reveals potential ties between not only Machado’s novel and Pedro Paramo , but also the broader literary histories of Spanish America and Brazil. As we address this specific case of possible influence and reception, we hope to promote not only comparative studies on Latin American authors, but also collaborative work between scholars in an effort to move Spanish American and Brazilian scholarship toward a more inclusive dialogue.

Juan Rulfo and Machado de Assis: Toward an Integrated New Narrative

With contemporary political debates centering on the possibility of closing the Guantanamo Bay military installation, attention is once again being focused on prisons in Cuba. This provides an opportunity to interrogate the modern history of prisons in Cuba, particularly following the Cuban Revolution. As such, this essay considers the use of Cuban prisons for the detention of political prisoners by examining Diary of a Survivor: Nineteen Years in a Cuban Women's Prison, the prison memoir of guerilla activist Ana Rodriguez to understand the resistance to Castro's revolution and the ways in which female prisoners reimagined themselves and wrote the brutal history of the Revolution.

Mem6rias do Cdrcere (1953) by Graciliano Ramos adds an important marker to the topology of au- tobiography, for the memoirs show the author's conscious manipulation of facts to transform them into a be- lievable narrative account which calls for the reader's imagination in the recreation of his life in prison. A Lacanian discourse analysis reveals the strategies employed by Graciliano Ramos in avoiding the pitfalls in- herent in autobiographical writing as he construes a believable narrative, which offers a powerful alternative to the official version of history.
