Journal ArticleDOI

Antibiotic resistance integrons and extended-spectrum β-lactamases among Enterobacteriaceae isolates recovered from chickens and swine in Portugal

TL;DR: This study is the first report of ESBLs and integrons from chickens and swine in Portugal and highlights the antibiotic-resistant bacteria and/or resistance genes that might be acquired by humans through the food chain.
Journal ArticleDOI

Environmental contamination with vancomycin-resistant enterococci from hospital sewage in Portugal.

TL;DR: Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) were detected in samples of sewage obtained downstream of hospitals of the Porto area in Portugal, and in samples from the Douro Estuary, highlighting the importance of hospital sewage in the VRE contamination of the environment.
Journal ArticleDOI

High occurrence and persistence of antibiotic-resistant enterococci in poultry food samples in Portugal.

TL;DR: Persistence of a number of widespread PFGE types containing different resistance genes might reflect environmental/host-adapted enterococcal strains that might contribute to the maintenance of antibiotic resistance, thus constituting a resistance reservoir that is non-sensitive to banning interventions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Long-term dissemination of an OXA-40 carbapenemase-producing Acinetobacter baumannii clone in the Iberian Peninsula

TL;DR: The results indicate that a multi-resistant epidemic clone of A. baumannii, carrying blaOXA-40, is disseminated in the Iberian Peninsula, persisting in Portugal since 1995.
