Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of dissolved carbon dioxide on energy metabolism and stress responses in European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax)
TL;DR: In this article, the effects of moderately elevated CO2 levels on performance, energy partitioning, swimming activity and stress response in European seabass were assessed, and the results showed that moderately elevated chronic CO2 level did not affect energy requirements for maintenance nor the utilization of digestible energy for growth.
Journal ArticleDOI
Interactive effects of oxygen, carbon dioxide and flow on photosynthesis and respiration in the scleractinian coral Galaxea fascicularis.
Ronald Osinga,Marlous Derksen-Hooijberg,Marlous Derksen-Hooijberg,Tim Wijgerde,Johan A.J. Verreth +4 more
TL;DR: Results indicate that for this individual of G. fascicularis, increased uptake of carbon dioxide rather than increased efflux of oxygen explains the beneficial effect of water flow on photosynthesis, which suggests a strong scope for growth.
Journal ArticleDOI
The effect of biomanipulation of the zooplankton on the growth, feeding and survival of pikeperch (Stizostedion lucioperca) in nursing ponds
Johan A.J. Verreth,K. Kleyn +1 more
TL;DR: Pikeperch fingerlings cultured in ponds are larger than those found in natural populations at the same time, giving them a high chance to become piscivorous and to increase the year class strength when stocked in natural waters.
Journal ArticleDOI
30 years of large river restoration: How long do restored floodplain channels remain suitable for targeted rheophilic fishes in the lower river Rhine?
T. Stoffers,Frank Collas,A.D. Buijse,G.W. Geerling,L. H. Jans,N. van Kessel,Johan A.J. Verreth,Leopold A. J. Nagelkerke +7 more
TL;DR: To create and maintain optimal nursery conditions in restored floodplain channels of strongly anthropogenically influenced rivers such as the river Rhine, a management strategy involving cyclic rejuvenation through human intervention, focusing on restoring permanent flow, with a frequency of on average every 15 years, depending on the rate of aggradation and targeted rheophilic species.
Journal ArticleDOI
Quantifying methionine requirement of juvenile African catfish (Clarias gariepinus)
Folasade E. Elesho,D.A.H. Sutter,M.A.C. Swinkels,Johan A.J. Verreth,Saskia Kröckel,Johan W. Schrama +5 more
TL;DR: The digestible methionine requirement of African catfish for growth (using LP) ranges between 18.7 and 21.4 g kg−1 per unit of digestible protein, which is lower than was has been previously reported for this species.
