A genome survey of Moniliophthora perniciosa gives new insights into Witches' Broom Disease of cacao
Jorge Maurício Costa Mondego,Marcelo Falsarella Carazzolle,Gustavo G.L. Costa,Eduardo Fernandes Formighieri,Lucas Pedersen Parizzi,Johana Rincones,Carolina Cotomacci,Dirce Maria Carraro,Anderson F. Cunha,Helaine Carrer,Ramon O. Vidal,Raissa Estrela,Odalys Garcia,Daniela P. T. Thomazella,Bruno V. de Oliveira,Acassia Benjamin Leal Pires,Maria Carolina Scatolin do Rio,Marcos Renato R. Araújo,Marcos H. de Moraes,Luis As Castro,Karina Peres Gramacho,Marilda Souza Goncalves,José Pereira de Moura Neto,Aristóteles Góes Neto,Luciana Veiga Barbosa,Mark J. Guiltinan,Bryan A. Bailey,Lyndel W. Meinhardt,J.C.M. Cascardo,Gonçalo A.G. Pereira +29 more
TL;DR: A significant portion of the M. perniciosa genome is involved in stress adaptation and plant necrosis, two necessary characteristics for a hemibiotrophic fungus to fulfill its infection cycle.
Journal ArticleDOI
Moniliophthora perniciosa, the causal agent of witches' broom disease of cacao: what's new from this old foe?
Lyndel W. Meinhardt,Johana Rincones,Bryan A. Bailey,M. Catherine Aime,Gareth W. Griffith,Dapeng Zhang,Gonçalo A.G. Pereira +6 more
TL;DR: The ability to culture a biotrophic-like phase in vitro along with new findings derived from the nearly complete genome and expression studies clearly show that these different fungal growth phases function under distinct metabolic parameters, which has greatly improved understanding of this fungal/host interaction.
Journal ArticleDOI
The genome sequence of Propionibacterium acidipropionici provides insights into its biotechnological and industrial potential
Lucas Pedersen Parizzi,Lucas Pedersen Parizzi,Maria Carolina De Barros Grassi,Maria Carolina De Barros Grassi,Luige A Llerena,Marcelo Falsarella Carazzolle,Veronica Leite Queiroz,Inês Lunardi,Ane Fernanda Beraldi Zeidler,Paulo José Pereira Lima Teixeira,Piotr A. Mieczkowski,Johana Rincones,Gonçalo A.G. Pereira +12 more
TL;DR: The data shows that P. acidipropionici has several of the desired features that are required to become a platform for the production of chemical commodities: multiple pathways for efficient feedstock utilization, ability to fix CO2, robustness, and efficient production of propionic acid, a potential precursor for valuable 3-carbon compounds.
Journal ArticleDOI
Characterization of necrosis and ethylene-inducing proteins (NEP) in the basidiomycete Moniliophthora perniciosa, the causal agent of witches' broom in Theobroma cacao.
Odalys Garcia,Joci Neuby Alves Macêdo,Ricardo Augusto Tiburcio,Gustavo Henrique Alcalá Zaparoli,Johana Rincones,Livia Maria Cabral Bittencourt,Geruza Oliveira Ceita,Fabienne Micheli,Abelmon da Silva Gesteira,Andréa Cristina Mariano,Marlene Aparecida Schiavinato,Francisco J. Medrano,Lyndel W. Meinhardt,Gonçalo A.G. Pereira,J.C.M. Cascardo +14 more
TL;DR: Differences in the expression of MpNEP1 and 2 indicate that similar NEPs can have distinct physical characteristics and suggest possible complementary roles during the disease development for both proteins.
Journal ArticleDOI
The mitochondrial genome of the phytopathogenic basidiomycete Moniliophthora perniciosa is 109 kb in size and contains a stable integrated plasmid
Eduardo Fernandes Formighieri,Ricardo Augusto Tiburcio,Eduardo Dutra de Armas,Francisco J. Medrano,Hugo Shimo,Nicolas Carels,Aristóteles Góes-Neto,Carolina Cotomacci,Marcelo Falsarella Carazzolle,Naiara Sardinha-Pinto,Daniela P. T. Thomazella,Johana Rincones,Luciano Antonio Digiampietri,Dirce Maria Carraro,Ana M. Azeredo-Espin,Sérgio F. dos Reis,Ana Carolina Deckmann,Karina Peres Gramacho,Marilda Souza Goncalves,José Pereira de Moura Neto,Luciana Veiga Barbosa,Lyndel W. Meinhardt,J.C.M. Cascardo,Gonçalo A.G. Pereira +23 more
TL;DR: The sequence of the mitochondrial genome of the basidiomycete phytopathogenic hemibiotrophic fungus Moniliophthora perniciosa, causal agent of the Witches' Broom Disease in Theobroma cacao, is presented, and is the largest sequenced so far.
