The Mn+1AXn phases: Materials science and thin-film processing

The MAX phases are a group of layered ternary compounds with the general formula Mn+1AXn (M: early transition metal; A: group A element; X: C and/or N; n = 1–3), which combine some properties of metals, such as good electrical and thermal conductivity, machinability, low hardness, thermal shock resistance and damage tolerance, with those of ceramics, such as high elastic moduli, high temperature strength, and oxidation and corrosion resistance. The publication of papers on the MAX phases has shown an almost exponential increase in the past decade. The existence of further MAX phases has been reported or proposed. In addition to surveying this activity, the synthesis of MAX phases in the forms of bulk, films and powders is reviewed, together with their physical, mechanical and corrosion/oxidation properties. Progress in research and development on MAX phases: a family of layered ternary compounds

The more than 60 ternary carbides and nitrides, with the general formula Mn+1AXn—where n = 1, 2, or 3; M is an early transition metal; A is an A-group element (a subset of groups 13–16); and X is C and/or N—represent a new class of layered solids, where Mn+1Xn layers are interleaved with pure A-group element layers. The growing interest in the Mn+1AXn phases lies in their unusual, and sometimes unique, set of properties that can be traced back to their layered nature and the fact that basal dislocations multiply and are mobile at room temperature. Because of their chemical and structural similarities, the MAX phases and their corresponding MX phases share many physical and chemical properties. In this paper we review our current understanding of the elastic and mechanical properties of bulk MAX phases where they differ significantly from their MX counterparts. Elastically the MAX phases are in general quite stiff and elastically isotropic. The MAX phases are relatively soft (2–8 GPa), are most readily machinable, and are damage tolerant. Some of them are also lightweight and resistant to thermal shock, oxidation, fatigue, and creep. In addition, they behave as nonlinear elastic solids, dissipating 25% of the mechanical energy during compressive cycling loading of up to 1 GPa at room temperature. At higher temperatures, they undergo a brittle-to-plastic transition, and their mechanical behavior is a strong function of deformation rate.

Elastic and Mechanical Properties of the MAX Phases

Post-transition elements, together with zinc-group metals and their alloys belong to an emerging class of materials with fascinating characteristics originating from their simultaneous metallic and liquid natures. These metals and alloys are characterised by having low melting points (i.e. between room temperature and 300 °C), making their liquid state accessible to practical applications in various fields of physical chemistry and synthesis. These materials can offer extraordinary capabilities in the synthesis of new materials, catalysis and can also enable novel applications including microfluidics, flexible electronics and drug delivery. However, surprisingly liquid metals have been somewhat neglected by the wider research community. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the fundamentals underlying liquid metal research, including liquid metal synthesis, surface functionalisation and liquid metal enabled chemistry. Furthermore, we discuss phenomena that warrant further investigations in relevant fields and outline how liquid metals can contribute to exciting future applications.

Liquid metals: fundamentals and applications in chemistry

In the quest to discover the properties of planar semiconductors, two-dimensional molybdenum trioxide and dichalcogenides have recently attracted a large amount of interest. This family, which includes molybdenum trioxide (MoO 3 ), disulphide (MoS 2 ), diselenide (MoSe 2 ) and ditelluride (MoTe 2 ), possesses many unique properties that make its compounds appealing for a wide range of applications. These properties can be thickness dependent and may be manipulated via a large number of physical and chemical processes. In this Feature Article, a comprehensive review is delivered of the fundamental properties, synthesis techniques and applications of layered and planar MoO 3 , MoS 2 , MoSe 2 , and MoTe 2 along with their future prospects.

Two-Dimensional Molybdenum Trioxide and Dichalcogenides

Metal–Organic Chemical Vapor Depostion Synthesis of Hollow Inorganic‐Fullerene‐Type MoS2 and MoSe2 Nanoparticles

Single crystals of V2AlC and the new carbides V4AlC3-x and V12Al3C8 were synthesized from metallic melts. V2AlC was formed with an excess of Al, while V4AlC3-x (x approximately 0.31) and V12Al3C8 require the addition of cobalt to the melt. All compounds were characterized by XRD, EDX, and WDX measurements. Crystal structures were refined on the basis of single-crystal data. The crystal structures can be explained with a building-block system consisting of two types of partial structures. The intermetallic part with a composition VAl is a two-layer cutting of the hexagonal closest packing. The carbide partial structure is a fragment of the binary carbide VC1-x containing one or three layers. V2AlC is a H-phase (211-phase) with space group P63/mmc, Z=2, and lattice parameters of a=2.9107(6) A, and c=13.101(4) A. V4AlC3-x (x approximately 0.31) represents a 413-phase with space group P63/mmc, Z=2, a=2.9302(4) A, and c=22.745(5) A. The C-deficit is limited to the carbon site of the central layer. V12Al3C8 is obtained at lower temperatures. In the superstructure (P63/mcm, Z=2, a=5.0882(7) A, and c=22.983(5) A) the vacancies on the carbon sites are ordered. The ordering is combined to a small shift of the V atoms. This ordered structure can serve as a structure model for the binary carbides TMC1-x as well. V4AlC3-x (x approximately 0.31) and V12Al3C8 are the first examples of the so-called MAX-phases (MX)nMM' (n=1, 2, 3), where a deficit of X and its ordered distribution in a superstructure is proven, (MX1-x)nMM'.
