Development and Testing of a Mobile Phone App for Self-Monitoring of Calcium Intake in Young Women
TL;DR: Testing the acceptability and usability of Calci-app, a dietary app to self-monitor calcium consumption, before it is used in a behavioral change intervention in young women aged 18-25 years demonstrated acceptable use, however, for regular and long-term use the self- monitors could be expanded to allow participants to view their total daily calcium intake compared with the recommended daily intake.
Journal ArticleDOI
The antiepileptic medications carbamazepine and phenytoin inhibit native sodium currents in murine osteoblasts
Sandra J. Petty,Carol J. Milligan,Marian Todaro,Kay L. Richards,Pamuditha K. Kularathna,Charles N. Pagel,Christopher A. French,Christopher A. French,Elisa L. Hill-Yardin,Terence J. O'Brien,Terence J. O'Brien,John D. Wark,Eleanor J. Mackie,Steven Petrou +13 more
TL;DR: The expression of voltage‐gated sodium (NaV) channels in mouse osteoblasts is confirmed and the action of carbamazepine and phenytoin on NaV channels is investigated to determine whether altered bone signaling increases bone fragility.
Journal ArticleDOI
Impaired bone and muscle development in young people treated with antiepileptic drugs
Peter J Simm,Peter J Simm,Sebastian Seah,Alex Gorelik,Lauren Gilbert,Jenning Nuguid,George A. Werther,George A. Werther,Mark T Mackay,Mark T Mackay,Jeremy L. Freeman,Sandra J. Petty,John D. Wark +12 more
TL;DR: Examination of bone, muscle, and balance outcomes in young patients taking AEDs found no significant differences in terms of bone density, balance impairment, or fracture risk in adults.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Effects of Home Exercise in Older Women with Vertebral Fractures: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial
Jenna C Gibbs,Caitlin McArthur,John D. Wark,Lehana Thabane,Samuel C Scherer,Sadhana Prasad,Alexandra Papaioannou,Nicole Mittmann,Judi Laprade,Sandra Kim,Aliya Khan,David L. Kendler,Keith D. Hill,Angela M. Cheung,Robert Bleakney,Maureen C. Ashe,Jonathan D. Adachi,Lora Giangregorio +17 more
TL;DR: The exploratory estimate of the effect of exercise on functional leg muscle strength was consistent in direction and magnitude with other trials in individuals with vertebral fractures, which suggests that strategies to enhance long-term adherence might be important in future confirmatory trials.
Journal ArticleDOI
Build better bones with exercise (B3E pilot trial): results of a feasibility study of a multicenter randomized controlled trial of 12 months of home exercise in older women with vertebral fracture
Lora Giangregorio,Jenna C. Gibbs,J. A. Templeton,Jonathan D. Adachi,Jonathan D. Adachi,Maureen C. Ashe,Robert Bleakney,Angela M. Cheung,Keith D. Hill,David L. Kendler,Aliya Khan,Sandra Kim,Sandra Kim,Caitlin McArthur,Caitlin McArthur,Nicole Mittmann,Alexandra Papaioannou,Sadhana Prasad,Samuel C Scherer,Lehana Thabane,Lehana Thabane,John D. Wark,John D. Wark +22 more
TL;DR: An RCT of home exercise in women with vertebral fractures is feasible but recruitment was a challenge, and Suggestions are made for the conduct of future trials.
