TL;DR: Members of the Joint Working Group on Improving Underrepresented Minorities Persistence in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), utilizing Kurt Lewin's planned approach to change, describe five recommendations to increase URM persistence in STEM at the undergraduate level.

TL;DR: It appears that undergraduate courses in chemistry have the effect of discouraging otherwise qualified students, as reflected in their admission to one of the most highly selective public universities in the US, from continuing in premedical studies, especially in the case of URM students.

TL;DR: Review of the literature suggests that the current STEM academic context does not consistently provide cues that affirm social inclusion to all members of the academic population, and that policies that address this disparity are essential to broadening STEM workforce development in the United States.

TL;DR: Although BSP students are more successful in completing a biology degree than non-program members, the results raise a series of questions about why the program works and for whom.
