Movements, behavior and habitat preferences of juvenile white sharks Carcharodon carcharias in the eastern Pacific
Kevin C. Weng,John O'Sullivan,Christopher G. Lowe,Chuck Winkler,Heidi Dewar,Barbara A. Block +5 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the nursery region of white sharks includes waters of southern California, USA, and Baja Cali- fornia, Mexico, and juvenile white sharks captured as bycatch in both US and Mexican waters, suggesting that management of fishing mortality should be of increased concern.
Journal ArticleDOI
Vulnerabilities and fisheries impacts: The uncertain future of manta and devil rays
Donald A. Croll,Heidi Dewar,Nicholas K. Dulvy,Daniel Fernando,Malcolm P. Francis,Felipe Galván-Magaña,Martin Hall,Shawn Heinrichs,Andrea D. Marshall,Douglas J. McCauley,Kelly Newton,Giuseppe Notarbartolo-di-Sciara,Mary P. O’Malley,John O'Sullivan,Marloes Poortvliet,Marloes Poortvliet,Marlon Román,Guy Stevens,Bernie R. Tershy,William T. White +19 more
TL;DR: Manta and devil rays of the subfamily Mobulinae (mobulids) are rarely studied, large, pelagic elasmobranchs, with all eight of well-evaluated species listed on the IUCN Red List as threatened or near threatened.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of trophic ecology and habitat use on maternal transfer of contaminants in four species of young of the year lamniform sharks.
Kady Lyons,Aaron B. Carlisle,Antonella Preti,Christopher G. Mull,Mary Ellen Blasius,John O'Sullivan,Chuck Winkler,Christopher G. Lowe +7 more
TL;DR: Differences in organic contaminant signatures and contaminant concentration magnitudes among species corroborated what is known about species habitat use and may be used to provide insights into the feeding ecology of these animals.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evidence of Maternal Offloading of Organic Contaminants in White Sharks (Carcharodon carcharias)
Christopher G. Mull,Kady Lyons,Mary Ellen Blasius,Chuck Winkler,John O'Sullivan,Christopher G. Lowe +5 more
TL;DR: Maternal offloading of organic contaminants during reproduction has been noted in other apex predators, but this is the first evidence of transfer in a matrotrophic shark.
Journal ArticleDOI
A dated molecular phylogeny of manta and devil rays (Mobulidae) based on mitogenome and nuclear sequences.
Marloes Poortvliet,Jeanine L. Olsen,Donald A. Croll,Giacomo Bernardi,Kelly Newton,Spyros Kollias,John O'Sullivan,Daniel Fernando,Guy Stevens,Felipe Galván Magaña,Bernard Séret,Sabine P. Wintner,Galice Hoarau +12 more
TL;DR: The closely shared evolutionary history of mobulids in combination with ongoing threats from fisheries and climate change effects on upwelling and food supply, reinforces the case for greater protection of this charismatic family of pelagic filter feeders.
