Methionine synthase D919G polymorphism is a significant but modest determinant of circulating homocysteine concentrations
Dawn L. Harmon,Denis C. Shields,Jayne V. Woodside,Dorothy McMaster,John Yarnell,Ian S. Young,Kun Peng,Barry Shane,Alun Evans,Alexander S. Whitehead +9 more
TL;DR: It is found that the methionine synthase D919G polymorphism is significantly associated with homocysteine concentration, and the DD genotype contributes to a moderate increase in homocy Steine levels across the homocy steine distribution, and this polymorphism may, therefore, make a moderate, but significant, contribution to clinical conditions that are associated with elevated homocystine.
Journal ArticleDOI
Food omega-3 fatty acid intake of individuals (total, linolenic acid, long-chain) and their blood pressure: INTERMAP study
Hirotsugu Ueshima,Jeremiah Stamler,Paul Elliott,Queenie Chan,Ian J. Brown,Mercedes R. Carnethon,Martha L. Daviglus,Ka He,Alicia Moag-Stahlberg,Beatriz L. Rodriguez,Lyn M. Steffen,Linda Van Horn,John Yarnell,Beifan Zhou +13 more
TL;DR: Food omega-3 PFA intake related inversely to blood pressure, including in nonhypertensive persons, with small estimated effect size, may contribute to prevention and control of adverse blood pressure levels.
Journal ArticleDOI
Plasma triglyceride and high density lipoprotein cholesterol as predictors of ischaemic heart disease in British men. The Caerphilly and Speedwell Collaborative Heart Disease Studies
D. Bainton,N. E. Miller,C. H. Bolton,John Yarnell,P. M. Sweetnam,I. A. Baker,Basil S. Lewis,Peter Creighton Elwood +7 more
TL;DR: Plasma triglyceride concentration predicts major ischaemic events after allowance is made for total and HDL cholesterol concentrations and other risk factors, and in these populations, triglyceride is a more important predictor than total cholesterol concentration.
Journal ArticleDOI
An analysis of Prospective Risk Factors for Aortic Stiffness in Men 20 year follow-up from the Caerphilly Prospective study
Carmel M. McEniery,Michael Spratt,Margaret Munnery,John Yarnell,Gordon D.O. Lowe,Ann Rumley,John Gallacher,Yoav Ben-Shlomo,John R. Cockcroft,Ian B. Wilkinson +9 more
TL;DR: Adequate control of pulse pressure and heart rate, as well as reducing inflammation, may, in the long-term, retard aortic stiffening, although this remains to be tested directly.
Journal ArticleDOI
Total and Differential Leukocyte Counts as Predictors of Ischemic Heart Disease: The Caerphilly and Speedwell Studies
TL;DR: The main contributor to the increase in total count in the men who developed disease was the neutrophil count, and there was also a statistically significant increase in the eosinophil count.
