The Communication, Awareness, Relationships and Empowerment (C.A.R.E.) Model: An Effective Tool for Engaging Urban Communities in Community-Based Participatory Research.
TL;DR: It is found that the Communication, Awareness, Relationships and Empowerment (C.A.R.E.) model was essential for success in recruitment and retention of an at-risk, African American population and may be an effective model for researchers hoping to engage racial/ethnic minority populations living in urban communities.
Journal ArticleDOI
Neighborhood Social Environment and Cardiovascular Disease Risk
Kosuke Tamura,Steven D Langerman,Joniqua N Ceasar,Marcus R Andrews,Malhaar Agrawal,Tiffany M. Powell-Wiley +5 more
TL;DR: This review concludes that future research should leverage tools to account for the spatial mismatch between environmental exposures and outcomes by using global positioning systems, ecological momentary assessments, virtual neighborhood audits, and simulation modeling.
Journal ArticleDOI
Geospatial Analysis of Neighborhood Deprivation Index (NDI) for the United States by County.
Marcus R Andrews,Kosuke Tamura,Sophie E Claudel,Samantha Xu,Joniqua N Ceasar,Billy S Collins,Steven D Langerman,Valerie Mitchell,Yvonne Baumer,Tiffany M. Powell-Wiley +9 more
TL;DR: A neighborhood deprivation index (NDI: higher NDI indicates higher deprivation/ lower neighborhood socioeconomic status) for each county within the US County level scores were loaded into ArcGIS 10.5.1 where they were mapped and analyzed using Moran's I and Anselin Local Moran’s I.
Journal ArticleDOI
Community Engagement in the Development of an mHealth-Enabled Physical Activity and Cardiovascular Health Intervention (Step It Up): Pilot Focus Group Study.
Joniqua N Ceasar,Sophie E Claudel,Marcus R Andrews,Kosuke Tamura,Valerie Mitchell,Alyssa T. Brooks,Tonya Dodge,Sherine El-Toukhy,Nicole Farmer,Kimberly R. Middleton,Melanie Sabado-Liwag,Melissa R Troncoso,Gwenyth R. Wallen,Tiffany M. Powell-Wiley +13 more
TL;DR: Involving target users in the development of a culturally sensitive PA app is an essential step for creating an app that has a higher likelihood of acceptance and use in a technology-enabled intervention.
Journal ArticleDOI
Physical activity-mediated associations between perceived neighborhood social environment and depressive symptoms among Jackson Heart Study participants.
Kosuke Tamura,Steven D Langerman,Stephanie L. Orstad,Sam J Neally,Marcus R Andrews,Joniqua N Ceasar,Mario Sims,Jae E. Lee,Tiffany M. Powell-Wiley +8 more
TL;DR: Higher levels of perceived neighborhood problems and violence were directly and positively associated with depressive symptoms and future interventions to reduce depressive symptoms attributed to neighborhood features should consider emphasizing built environment features that facilitate PA increases in conjunction with community efforts to reduce neighborhood violence and problems.
