The R package mice imputes incomplete multivariate data by chained equations. The software mice 1.0 appeared in the year 2000 as an S-PLUS library, and in 2001 as an R package. mice 1.0 introduced predictor selection, passive imputation and automatic pooling. This article documents mice, which extends the functionality of mice 1.0 in several ways. In mice, the analysis of imputed data is made completely general, whereas the range of models under which pooling works is substantially extended. mice adds new functionality for imputing multilevel data, automatic predictor selection, data handling, post-processing imputed values, specialized pooling routines, model selection tools, and diagnostic graphs. Imputation of categorical data is improved in order to bypass problems caused by perfect prediction. Telephone surveys have become more and more popular in the last thirty years, reaching their zenith in the s. At the end of the twentieth century, telephone surveys were the major mode of data collection for sample surveys in North America and Western Europe (Nathan, ). The main advantages, compared to face-to-face interviews, are lower costs and stricter interviewer control. In addition, extensive research has improved telephone survey methods considerably (e.g., Groves, Biemer et al., ), and telephone surveys can produce high quality data (Leeuw, ; Leeuw & Zouwen, ). In the new millennium, telephone interviewers are faced with new problems that threaten the validity of the method. The growing number of unsolicited calls (e.g., tell-sell, telemarketing, polls) may lessen the willingness to cooperate. The American Statistical Association () mentions the near saturation calling conducted by telemarketers as one of the causes of declining survey cooperation rates. An indication of the growing irritation with unsolicited calls is that millions of Americans immediately registered when the Federal ‘do-not-call’ registry started in June  (Schulman, ; Robinson, ). Although not yet at the high American level, unsolicited phone calls are becoming a nuisance factor in Europe too. Recent studies in the Netherlands showed that each Dutch adult receives five uninvited phone calls a year on average. Although some sub-conditions will receive considerably more calls, depending on age, profession, and status, overall a Dutch household will answer eleven unsolicited calls a year on average (Steenis, ). Therefore, it is not surprising that there is a growing negative attitude towards market research in the Netherlands. When asked about market research,  percent of the respondents say that they are asked to cooperate far too often. Even more worrisome is that  percent are convinced that market research is selling under the guise of research (Brennecke, ). This will influence the interpretation of the intent of a call; in psychological terms it will change the cognitive script that guides the reactions to uninvited calls. More often potential respondents will react to uninvited telephone calls, using the ‘they want to sell me something’-script, because experience taught them to expect a sales-pitch and not a serious and legitimate survey. Telephone interviewers are more limited than face-to-face interviewers in the tools they have at their disposal to correct this erroneous script and to convince a potential respondent that this is a legitimate survey. Household survey nonresponse is a matter of concern in many countries. In one of the first international trend analyses, de Leeuw and de Heer (2002) found that response rates declined over the years, and that countries differed in response rates and nonresponse trends. Their analyses cover longitudinal data on the Labour Force Survey from National Statistical Institutes for the period 1980 to 1997. We added a new data set, covering the period 1998 -2015, and analysed nonresponse data over time and countries. In these analyses we differentiated between voluntary and mandatory surveys. The trends visible in de Leeuw and de Heer (2002) continue with possibly a small deceleration in refusal rates.

Este trabajo investiga las diferencias entre la regresion multinivel estandar y el modelo de ecuaciones estructurales en relacion al analisis de curvas de crecimiento. El modelo basico de curva de crecimiento tiene la misma especificacion en ambos marcos, pero en muchos casos el modelado de ecuaciones estructurales es mas flexible que el analisis de regresion multinivel. Esta flexibilidad implica la integracion de la estructura factorial de la variable de medidas repetidas, estimando coeficientes para investigar la forma de las curvas de crecimiento, estructuras residuales alternativas, datos perdidos en variables predictoras y extensiones a modelos estructurales mas complejos. El analisis de regresion multinivel, por otra parte, es mas flexible al incorporar niveles mas elevados dentro del modelo asi como en las posibilidades de analizar datos con ocasiones vairables entre sujetos. No obstante, la distincion entre regresion multinivel y el analisis de curvas de crecimiento latente es actualmente difusa, y puede ser solo una cuestion de tiempo el que los dos enfoques se fusionen entre si. Hasta tal momento, este trabajo puede ayudar a facilitar la eleccion entre el analisis de regresion multinivel y el modelado de curvas de crecimiento latente. Introduction to Multilevel Analysis

Growth curve models are used to model development explicitly as a function of time. Two techniques are commonly used to construct and analyze growth curve models: structural equation modeling, with distinct measurement occasions represented by separate variables, and multilevel regression modeling, with different measurement occasions represented as nested within individuals. Both approaches are essentially the same, but they differ in the way they can be extended into models that are more complex. An example is given, and estimation methods and software are briefly discussed.
