Resilience and cleaner production in industry 4.0: Role of supply chain mapping and visibility

Purpose




Company pressure for manufacturers is mounting from two angles: increasing pressure of global competition, and rapid advancements in technology such as additive manufacturing (AM) that are altering the way that goods are manufactured. The purpose of this paper is to explore the adoption process of AM within a manufacturing system and its business impact.




Design/methodology/approach




Research was conducted to collect empirical data at two manufacturing case companies in the North West England. Both cases are located in areas of industrial recovery using AM engineering innovation for value creation.




Findings




Early findings showed that the implementation of AM caused a shift in value propositions and the creation of additional value streams (VSs) for the case study companies. AM was shown to compliment and strengthen traditional manufacturing VSs rather than replacing them.




Research limitations/implications




Limitations include the generalizability due to the number and location of case companies included in this research.




Practical implications




It is worthwhile to explore the opportunities that AM brings with the existing customer base as it has the potential to add unexplored and untapped value. However, managers need to be mindful of the capability and resources required to put the VS into practice.




Social implications




Both cases resulted in skill retainment and development due to the implementation of AM. Hence, the innovation contributed to regional economic recovery and business survival.




Originality/value




This empirical research is one of the early field explorations focussing on the impact of AM on VS structures. Hence, this paper contributes to the area of technology enhanced manufacturing systems.

Extracting supply chain maps from news articles using deep neural networks

The purpose of this paper is to determine the impact of standardized management systems (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 22000 and ISO 28000) on minimizing selected aspects of risk in the supply chain.,A questionnaire was used to explore this topic. Respondents were divided into two group regarding organization type – logistic service providers and focal companies. Basic data analysis was based on descriptive statistics and on analysis of variance with organization type as a stratification factor. Deeper data analysis was based on factor analysis with principal component analysis and varimax rotation with Kaiser normalization.,Research shows that standardized management systems turn out to be useful in supply chain risk management (SCRM) regardless of the role that the organization plays in the supply chain. However, the strength of their positive impact varies. There were few respondents among logistic operators who were low in assessing the legitimacy of implementing standardized management systems in the examined context. Having this in mind, especially representatives of logistic operators with a limited budget should consider making the decision to implement standardized management systems.,The obtained research results may be helpful for managers who consider to implement standardized management systems in the context of using obtain guidelines to develop procedures to improve supply chain management and ensure the repeatability of ongoing processes.,Although the number of studies on the SCRM increases, it is worth noting that in the literature there is still a lack of research and studies addressing the impact of standardized management systems on SCRM (especially from the perspective of organizations with various functions in supply chains such as focal companies and logistic service providers). Therefore, there is a need for comprehensive research in this area. According to the authors, the study carried out, at least to some extent, will fill this gap.

Supply chain value stream mapping: a new tool of operation management

Safety Management System in TQM environments

The present era requires new research in order to manage the current exploration/exploitation paradoxes. The paper analyses the influence of Total Quality Management (TQM) on exploratory and exploitative strategies. The study tests the hypotheses empirically using a sampling of over 12,000 Spanish firms, by performing several logistic regressions to analyse the impact of TQM on each type of strategy innovation. Organisational innovations based on TQM have been very important in Spain in the last years. Managers can use the potential inherent in TQM to meet the exploration–exploitation paradox. TQM contains values pertaining to exploration and exploitation which are useful for promoting strategies for innovation processes, but means a greater weakness for promoting exploration in strategic formulation. When a company engages in internal R&D activities within a TQM environment, its capacity to make commitments and establish objectives in terms of exploration and exploitation is reinforced.

The innovation strategies for managing a specific paradox: exploration/exploitation

In a turbulent business environment, fostered by economical and financial "crisis" for the years 2008 and 2009, certain Mexican industry organizations have started some efforts to improve their operations with other types of strategies, including the Kaizen (Continuous Improvement) philosophy. Thus, to realize an empirical study of this item in the Mexican industrial environment is important for three main reasons, that is the main purpose of this study: 1) understand how the Kaizen philosophy applies in the Mexican industry organizations; 2) analyze the presence and implementation of guiding principles, techniques and tools of the Kaizen philosophy in industrial enterprises, and 3) find the potential benefits that has brought them to be compared to a global environment "crisis", as well as the main difficulties that have to implement it and sustain it in time. The research study combine qualitative and quantitative approach present the main findings of the surveys (in tables and graphics) in terms of the application of Kaizen philosophy and human factor involvement.
