A proposed paradigm for smart learning environment based on semantic web

The built environment sector impacts significantly on communities. At the same time, it is the sector with the highest cost and environmental saving potentials provided effective strategies are implemented. The emerging Semantic Web promises new opportunities for efficient management of information and knowledge about various domains. While other domains, particularly bioinformatics have fully embraced the Semantic Web, knowledge about how the same has been applied to the built environment is sketchy. This study investigates the development and trend of Semantic Web applications in the built environment. Understanding the different applications of the Semantic Web is essential for evaluation, improvement and opening of new research. A review of over 120 refereed articles on built environment Semantic Web applications has been conducted. A classification of the different Semantic Web applications in relation to their year of application is presented to highlight the trend. Two major findings have emerged. Firstly, despite limited research about easy-to-use applications, progress is being made from often too-common ontological concepts to more innovative concepts such as Linked Data. Secondly, a shift from traditional construction applications to Semantic Web sustainable construction applications is gradually emerging. To conclude, research challenges, potential future development and research directions have been discussed.

The notion of competency provides an observable account of concrete human capacities under specific work conditions The fact that competencies are subject to concrete kinds of measurement entails that they are subject to some extent to comparison and even in some sense, calculus Then, competency models and databases can be used to compute competency gaps, to aggregate competencies of individuals as part of groups, and to compare capacities However, as of today there is not a commonly agreed model or ontology for competencies, and scattered reports use different models for computing with competencies This paper addresses how computing with competencies can be approached from a general perspective, using a flexible and extensible ontological model that can be adapted to the particularities of concrete organizations Then, the consideration of competencies as an organizational asset is approached from the perspective of particular issues as competency gap analysis, the definition of job positions and how learning technology can be linked with competency models The framework presented provides a technology-based baseline for organizations dealing with competency models, enabling the management of the knowledge acquisition dynamics of employees as driven by concrete and measurable accounts of organizational needs

Computing with competencies: Modelling organizational capacities

In the current era of increased customization, changing manufacturing systems and business globalization, effective use of product design information and knowledge generated from the product model can facilitate the decision-making of an assembly sequence by providing feasible product relationships and a viable semantic foundation To enrich such semantics, a geometry-enhanced ontology modelling and reasoning framework is proposed in this paper to explicitly express relevant concepts for assembly sequence planning (ASP) A rule-based reasoning mechanism based on Ontology Web Language Description Logics (OWL-DL) and Semantic Web Rule Language (SWRL) is also suggested to clarify implicit relations by incorporating reasoning units (RUs) to process complex geometric information This framework is then validated with a complex case study related to assembly sequence planning

An ontology-based modelling and reasoning framework for assembly sequence planning

Although ontologies and organizational learning are issues that have been discussed for many years, there is not an approach on literature that gives an overview about how both issues have been applied together. This literature review has the objective of exploring how ontologies are being applied in the organizational learning process recently; as a consequence, only studies from the year of 2005 onwards have been searched. The identification process produced 353 papers from 11 different databases. After applying the exclusion criteria, the set was reduced to 11 papers, which clearly fitted to the criteria defined for accomplishment of the systematic review, which were then analyzed and classified. The papers have been classified according to the structure and level of the ontologies. Furthermore, the Information Technology (IT) used in conjunction with ontology was identified, as well as the way ontologies and IT can act as a means of facilitating the organizational learning process. It was observed that although ontologies are rather important, a very few number of researches have applied ontologies in the organizational learning processes. In a general way, ontologies and IT encourage the sharing of knowledge and formalization.

Review: Ontologies application in organizational learning: A literature review

Parâmetros distintos podem ser utilizados para adaptar e personalizar os ambientes de aprendizagem computacionais, um deles e o estilo de aprendizagem. Existem diversos modelos disponiveis que possibilitam a identificacao do estilo, porem nao existem estudos que explorem quais destes modelos sao os mais utilizados para prover adaptacao e personalizacao de materiais de aprendizagem. Alem disso, existem poucos detalhes referentes ao mapeamento entre as escalas dos modelos de estilo de aprendizagem e as caracteristicas dos materiais de aprendizagem. Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo explorar e apontar algumas respostas para estas questoes.

Personalized online systems have been developed to make learning more effective. One of the ways to achieve this personalization is to recommend the use of learning materials according to learning styles. However, information on learning materials and learning styles must be formalized to make automatic processing by the computer possible. The objective of this work is to propose an ontology that allows the recommendation of learning materials according to learning styles. The experiments presented here have proved that the use of ontology to meet the established objective is viable.

Recommending Learning Materials according to Ontology-based Learning Styles

Ambientes graficos e interativos, tais como o Alice, tem sido propostos como uma alternativa no ensino de programacao. Com base nesta proposta, este trabalho avaliou o uso do Alice em uma turma do curso de graduacao de Sistemas de Informacao. Os resultados mostraram que, diferentemente de relatos anteriores, o uso do Alice nao contribuiu de forma significativa na aprovacao da disciplina Programacao I. Os motivos que nos levam a acreditar que este tipo de ambiente tem aplicacao limitada para alunos dos cursos de programacao em nivel de graduacao sao discutidos neste trabalho.

Limitações da Utilização do Alice no Ensino de Programação para Alunos de Graduação

This work refers to the review of 258 papers published in the WER throughout 15 editions. This review s goal was to identify the most active research groups within this workshop, the most debated topics and the trends in the Requirements Engineering area. Furthermore, the aim of this review was to analyze the relevance of WER. It was made identifying where WER papers have been cited. The results showed that Brazil, Argentina and Spain hold the most active groups. The requirements modeling is one of the most discussed topics in this event. Moreover, the results pointed out the international conference as one type of publication that more referenced WER papers, and the Requirements Engineering as one of the journals that more referenced WER papers.
