Journal ArticleDOI
Cassini imaging of Jupiter's atmosphere, satellites, and rings.
Carolyn Porco,Robert A. West,Alfred S. McEwen,Anthony D. Del Genio,Andrew P. Ingersoll,Peter C. Thomas,S. W. Squyres,Luke Dones,Carl D. Murray,Torrence V. Johnson,Joseph A. Burns,André Brahic,Gerhard Neukum,Joseph Veverka,J. Barbara,Tilmann Denk,Michael W. Evans,Joseph Ferrier,Paul Geissler,Paul Helfenstein,Thomas Roatsch,Henry B. Throop,Matthew S. Tiscareno,Ashwin R. Vasavada +23 more
TL;DR: Findings on Jupiter's zonal winds, convective storms, low-latitude upper troposphere, polar stratosphere, and northern aurora are reported, including previously unseen emissions arising from Io and Europa in eclipse, and a giant volcanic plume over Io's north pole are described.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lightning storms on Saturn observed by Cassini ISS and RPWS during 2004–2006
Ulyana A. Dyudina,Andrew P. Ingersoll,Shawn P. Ewald,Carolyn C. Porco,Georg Fischer,William S. Kurth,Michael D. Desch,Anthony D. Del Genio,J. Barbara,Joseph Ferrier +9 more
TL;DR: Porco et al. as discussed by the authors reported on Cassini Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS) data correlated with Radio and Plasma Wave Science (RPWS) observations, which indicate lightning on Saturn.
Journal ArticleDOI
Saturn eddy momentum fluxes and convection : First estimates from Cassini images
Anthony D. Del Genio,J. Barbara,Joseph Ferrier,Andrew P. Ingersoll,Robert A. West,Ashwin R. Vasavada,Joseph N. Spitale,Carolyn C. Porco +7 more
TL;DR: This paper applied an automated cloud feature tracking algorithm to estimate eddy momentum fluxes in Saturn's southern hemisphere from Cassini Imaging Science Subsystem near-infrared continuum image sequences, showing that eddies supply momentum to eastward jets and remove momentum from westward jets at a rate ∼ 5 × 10 −6 m s −2.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evaluation of Long-Term Calibrations of the AVHRR Visible Radiances
William B. Rossow,Joseph Ferrier +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, two systematic calibrations have been compiled for the visible radiances measured by the series of AVHRR instruments flown on the NOAA operational polar weather satellites: one by the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP), anchored on NASA ER-2 underflights in the 1980s and early 1990s and covering the period 1981-2009, and one by PATMOS-x project, anchored on comparisons to the MODIS instruments on the Aqua and Terra satellites in the 2000s.
