Educating change agents for sustainability – learnings from the first sustainability management master of business administration

In this book the author is for self-development, flexibility, individuality, commitment, courage, and love. He is against tyranny, vested interests, deadwood, inflexibility, moral decay, morbid pessimism—and sin. Moreover, the book deals with some rather general ideas, concepts and abstractions such as "society," "self-knowledge," and "creativity" which are almost innately soporific. In short, it should be pretty dull reading—but it is not. Rather, this very short book is thought-provoking, often very amusing, and continuously interesting. It is reviewed in these pages because so much of what is said has relevance to what is perhaps the most important determinant of the quality of medical care—the continuing self-renewal of the physician. Parts of this long essay deal with the factors which further or impede innovation in society and these comments have application to the problems of adapting our systems of medical education and medical care to fit the changing society they serve. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide information about the extent to which sustainability is integrated into business school education and learning in the Asia Pacific region.Design/methodology/approach – A survey was developed, and administered to business schools in the Asia Pacific region. In addition to measuring the number of courses and programs integrating sustainability, the study solicited qualitative observations by respondents, to provide information and insight into the issues.Findings – The research found that whereas corporate governance, sustainability and business ethics were quite commonly taught in business schools, they were not generally prioritized. There was also an overall lack of systematic approaches to the integration of sustainability in business curricula, and significant barriers to the integration of sustainability into programs remained.Originality/value – This is the first region‐wide survey of sustainability in business education in the Asia Pacific region.

Sustainability in business education in the Asia Pacific region: a snapshot of the situation

This article describes the current relationship between management education in Colombia and the efforts of the management program at Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana (UPB) in Medellin to reduce local poverty. The article uses the metaphor of "the bubble" to illustrate how social class, family socialization, and the current UPB management curriculum insulate management students from thinking about and interacting with the poor in Medellin. Based on the authors' experiences, five interventions are described that (a) integrate the issue of poverty more meaningfully throughout the management curriculum and (b) pierce this bubble within which UPB management expect to live their entire professional lives.

Piercing the Bubble: How Management Students Can Confront Poverty in Colombia.

Traditional administration, the normative-cut and exacerbated-control one, is still in force in theoretical-type proposals as much as it is in business practices, which is due to the resistance to give up instrumental rationality within organizational management. This phenomenon has permeated all the dimensions experienced in an organization; even the most human acts, such as dialogue and communication, have been prey to instrumentation. The purpose of this paper is to set forth the need for dialogic administration capable of overcoming the fundamental pillars of traditional instrumental management. To accomplish this task, a qualitative-documentary type of methodology and a hermeneutic method were used by studying, firstly, the theoretical foundations of traditional administration and, secondly, by interpreting the constituent elements of the “dialogue” category in Gadamer’s thinking so as to create a discussion about how Gadamerian postulates may serve as the basis to build a dialogic administration proposal, where dialogue is rescued from instrumentation, and given its place as the most humane in men within an organization and then become an integral part of the organizational culture, because it provides recognition to each person’s uniqueness and promotes learning processes.

La investigacion Analisis estrategico para el desarrollo de las MIPYME en Colombia elaborado por las Universidades Externado, del Valle, de la Sabana, Icesi y Pontificia Bolivariana de Medellin presenta las principales caracteristicas de estas empresas en el pais, analiza sus estrategias y principales factores competitivos, determina sus fortalezas y debilidades; y por otra parte plantea propuestas de actuacion para la mejora de la competitividad y el exito. Análisis estratégico para el desarrollo de las mipymes en colombia

This article analyzes the OLM proposal aimed at identifying the main characteristics of individual behavior that facilitate learning in the SME manufacturing industry in Chile and Colombia. The multiple comparative case study applied between the two SMEs of the chemical sector according to the Theory of Action, shows more individual behaviors that facilitate learning in Chile than in Colombia. This study contributes to the characterization of learning to increase the generation of knowledge in the Latin American manufacturing industry.
