Towards dialogic administration: a proposal from Gadamer’s thinking

Abstract
Traditional administration, the normative-cut and exacerbated-control one, is still in force in theoretical-type proposals as much as it is in business practices, which is due to the resistance to give up instrumental rationality within organizational management. This phenomenon has permeated all the dimensions experienced in an organization; even the most human acts, such as dialogue and communication, have been prey to instrumentation. The purpose of this paper is to set forth the need for dialogic administration capable of overcoming the fundamental pillars of traditional instrumental management. To accomplish this task, a qualitative-documentary type of methodology and a hermeneutic method were used by studying, firstly, the theoretical foundations of traditional administration and, secondly, by interpreting the constituent elements of the “dialogue” category in Gadamer’s thinking so as to create a discussion about how Gadamerian postulates may serve as the basis to build a dialogic administration proposal, where dialogue is rescued from instrumentation, and given its place as the most humane in men within an organization and then become an integral part of the organizational culture, because it provides recognition to each person’s uniqueness and promotes learning processes.

Silencio en las organizaciones: un análisis y discusión de la literatura

Abstract: O objetivo deste trabalho e apresentar como o silencio tem sido estudado por pesquisadores de gestao ou areas afins (como psicologia ou comunicacao organizacionais). Ignorado por longo tempo, o silencio emerge como uma area frutifera de pesquisa devido a diversas consequencias que ele pode causar para os empregados (estresse, angustia, baixa autoestima e dissonância cognitiva), para as organizacoes (absenteismo, maior rotatividade, baixa produtividade) e para a sociedade (nao denuncia de ilegalidades cometidas pelas organizacoes). Faz-se um levantamento bibliografico com base na divisao em tres ondas de pesquisa sobre a evolucao dos estudos de voz e silencio nas organizacoes baseado em Brinsfield, Edwards e Greenberg (2009), com foco no silencio. Da primeira onda (1970-1980) sao apresentados: o conceito de voz e a subsuncao do silencio ao conceito de lealdade; as \"espirais de silencio\" e o \"efeito mudo\" (MUM effect). Da segunda onda (1980-2000): a \"denuncia de irregularidades organizacionais\" (whistleblowing); a \"discordância organizacional baseada em principios\" (principled organizational dissent); a justica organizacional; a \"promocao de questoes\" (issue selling); a cidadania organizacional; o ostracismo social e a \"sindrome do surdo\" (deaf-ear syndrome). Da terceira onda (2000 em diante): o silencio organizacional; o silencio dos empregados; retirada do trabalho (job withdrawal); aprendizagem organizacional e transferencia de conhecimento. Observou-se que as pesquisas, principalmente no caso da terceira onda, tem evoluido de pesquisas conceituais e qualitativas para pesquisas quantitativas, havendo questionamentos de alguns pesquisadores sobre a necessidade de se utilizar outras abordagens teorico-metodologicas alem das de inspiracao positivista. A pesquisa brasileira sobre silencio, apesar do pequeno volume, contribui para a compreensao do fenomeno na medida em que se insere na agenda atual, buscando fazer pontes entre o conhecimento obtido no exterior e sua relacao com a cultura local (caso do whistleblowing), questionando a unilateralidade das pesquisas em determinado tema (caso do silencio organizacional) ou buscando entender o silencio tambem como espaco de compreensao e aprendizagem. Por fim, sugere-se que sejam feitos estudos sobre silencio que compreendam outras linguas latinas, como tambem que as pesquisas brasileiras futuras levem em consideracao a cultura e caracteristicas locais, considerando ainda outras abordagens teorico-metodologicas para a compreensao do fenomeno.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the current state of Organization Studies in Latin America, disclosing the epistemic coloniality that prevails in the region, and recognize the role played by the term "organization" as an artifice that facilitates the comparison of different realities through their structural variables, but also the inability of this term to recognize any reality that escapes instrumental rationality and the logic of the market.
