Review of digital twin about concepts, technologies, and industrial applications

When, in 1956, Artificial Intelligence (AI) was officially declared a research field, no one would have ever predicted the huge influence and impact its description, prediction, and prescription capabilities were going to have on our daily lives. In parallel to continuous advances in AI, the past decade has seen the spread of broadband and ubiquitous connectivity, (embedded) sensors collecting descriptive high dimensional data, and improvements in big data processing techniques and cloud computing. The joint usage of such technologies has led to the creation of digital twins, artificial intelligent virtual replicas of physical systems. Digital Twin (DT) technology is nowadays being developed and commercialized to optimize several manufacturing and aviation processes, while in the healthcare and medicine fields this technology is still at its early development stage. This paper presents the results of a study focused on the analysis of the state-of-the-art definitions of DT, the investigation of the main characteristics that a DT should possess, and the exploration of the domains in which DT applications are currently being developed. The design implications derived from the study are then presented: they focus on socio-technical design aspects and DT lifecycle. Open issues and challenges that require to be addressed in the future are finally discussed.

With a specific focus on the aerospace sector, this paper is a starting point in the definition of a framework, based on a commercial software system, to facilitate the biunivocal relation between a physical individual aircraft, identified by means of a 'manufacturing serial number' (MSN), and its equivalent digital counterpart. It reviews the different topics involved in the creation of an aircraft digital counterpart, i.e., complexity, identification, lifecycle, information and configuration, and the main software applications involved. Then, it shows the implications on the digital counterpart creation from the view of the aircraft industrial design. Finally, it discusses the proposal of a supporting framework based on Dassault system

Framework to support the aircraft digital counterpart concept with an industrial design view

The design of an aircraft Final Assembly Line FAL is part of the product industrialisation process. The FAL conceptual design phase is characterised by being time-consuming and depending heavily on personnel knowledge and experience. The need to develop methods and tools to enhance the design of aircraft assembly lines is acknowledged by academia and industry. This work proposes a knowledge-based prototype application to assist and guide designers in the definition and evaluation of conceptual FAL alternatives. A digital FAL is part of the industrial digital mock-up iDMU and comprises three structures: product, processes and resources PPR. The implementation of the proposed application was carried out in a commercial software system supporting the PPR structures and the iDMU. The executed case studies show the feasibility of the proposed approach, which can be considered as a starting point contribution to the field.

Knowledge-based application to define aircraft final assembly lines at the industrialisation conceptual design phase

The aim of this work is to present the process for the concurrent design of aero-structure assembly lines. Such process will be used to develop a Knowledge Based System (KBS) to automatically generate feasible assembly line models during the conceptual phase of an aero-structure development. The assembly line models will be based on the product manufacturing solutions adopted, which are derived from the design solutions. The assembly line design process is conducted concurrently with product design. Each assembly line model will be defined by a set of information. Such information has been identified and structure into a set of Units of Knowledge (UoKs). Using the MOKA methodology, such UoKs will be defined in a knowledge model for the development of the KBS. The objective is to obtain a set of results that comprises the main characteristics of the assembly line and its early industrialization. Such characteristics are related to: machines, tooling and jigs, technologies to be used, space needed, logistic requirements, work force needed, etc. Expected benefits are the formalization and rationalization of the assembly line definition process, standardization of the solutions, development time reduction, and formalization and capture of the knowledge needed.

Concurrent conceptual design of aero-structure assembly lines

The implementation of Internet technologies has led to e-Manufacturing technologies becoming more widely used and to the development of tools for compiling, transforming and synchronising manufacturing data through the Web. In this context, a potential area for development is the extension of virtual manufacturing to performance measurement (PM) processes, a critical area for decision making and implementing improvement actions in manufacturing. This paper proposes a PM information framework to integrate decision support systems in e-Manufacturing. Specifically, the proposed framework offers a homogeneous PM information exchange model that can be applied through decision support in e-Manufacturing environment. Its application improves the necessary interoperability in decision-making data processing tasks.
