We explore the theoretical foundations of value creation in e-business by examining how 59 American and European e-businesses that have recently become publicly traded corporations create value. We observe that in e-business new value can be created by the ways in which transactions are enabled. Grounded in the rich data obtained from case study analyses and in the received theory in entrepreneurship and strategic management, we develop a model of the sources of value creation. The model suggests that the value creation potential of e-businesses hinges on four interdependent dimensions, namely: efficiency, complementarities, lock-in, and novelty. Our findings suggest that no single entrepreneurship or strategic management theory can fully explain the value creation potential of e-business. Rather, an integration of the received theoretical perspectives on value creation is needed. To enable such an integration, we offer the business model construct as a unit of analysis for future research on value creation in e-business. A business model depicts the design of transaction content, structure, and governance so as to create value through the exploitation of business opportunities. We propose that a firm's business model is an important locus of innovation and a crucial source of value creation for the firm and its suppliers, partners, and customers. A review of the literature shows a broad diversity of understandings, usages, and places in the firm. The paper identifies the terminology or ontology used to describe a business model, and compares this terminology with previous work. Then the general usages, roles and potential of the concept are outlined. Finally, the connection between the business model concept and Information Systems is described in the form of eight propositions to be analyzed in future work.

The Nature of Managerial Work

Integrating TTF and UTAUT to explain mobile banking user adoption

Based on the concept of task/technology fit, a research framework and exploratory case study are presented that assess success factors and impacts of mobile business applications. Preliminary empirical evidence for the applicabilit y of the framework was obtained for a mobile electronic procurement system implemented at a Fortune 100 company. For different user groups, the relationships between the characteristics of technology and tasks, usage, and organizational impacts were analyzed. The results indicate a need for simple but highly functional mobile applications that complement existing information systems. The study provides a basis for further research to improve the design and management of business applications based on emerging technologies.

Success Factors and Impacts of Mobile Business Applications: Results from a Mobile e-Procurement Study

Mobile information technology (IT) holds great promise to support managerial processes; however, clear guidelines of how to design effective mobile information systems (IS) for use by managers are still lacking. Building on earlier research studies of task-technology fit (TTF) and other areas of IS, this article presents a three-step conceptual model to establish fit between managerial tasks, mobile IT, and the mobile use context, assuming that a good fit positively impacts task performance. We find that use situations characterized by high distraction and poor quality of network connection are particularly challenging for the design of mobile IS, and that the user interface requires particular attention. Our model contributes to IS research by joining disparate streams of research in an effort to help advance our understanding about the development and utilization of mobile IS. From a practical perspective, we contribute to the success of mobile IS and to the effectiveness of mobile work as it becomes increasingly prevalent in our modern world.

Business-to-business electronic commerce has dramatically changed the landscape of inter-organizational relationships. Now in its third year, this HICSS minitrack continues to provide a forum to bring researchers together to discuss the implications to information systems research. Our general focus is on systems and processes that support the flow of information within and between organizations in the context of procurement, manufacturing, and sales, and the distribution of goods, information, and services. A total of seven papers will be presented in the two sessions of this minitrack. The presentations cover a number of different topics, mirroring the diversity of the area, as well as its complexity, including adoption management, considerations of B2B e-commerce in an international setting, supply chain management, and the exchange of XML-based business documents. The research approaches used by our presenters vary equally, as they include case studies, economic modeling, conceptual frameworks, and prototypical system implementations.
