The Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) has been developed to estimate the strength distributions of heterogeneous materials influenced by different factors. The method presents a statistical correlation between the macroscopic properties and the non-uniform characteristics at meso scale. This study proposes an extensive MCS to investigate the influence of the aggregate morphology on deformation behaviour of unbound granular materials (UGMs) based on a real aggregate library and the discrete element method. Two indexes, elongation index (EI) and flatness index (FI), were used to evaluate the morphological characteristics of 3D aggregates rebuilt by the X-ray CT technique. Furthermore, repeated load triaxial tests of UGMs were simulated by 50 MCS samples. The effects of shapes and sizes of aggregates on deformation behaviours were statistically analysed. The results show that the deformation behaviour is dependent on the size and the EI distribution, but insensitive to the loading frequencies and FI distribution.

Evaluation of coarse aggregate movement and contact unbalanced force during asphalt mixture compaction process based on discrete element method

The variability in strata of foundation soil in marine environments makes it tedious to design foundations for offshore structures. Hence, it is essential to investigate and evaluate the strength properties of this type of soil. This study investigates the variability of the soil strata (which is quantified by the index of the mixing degree between coarse and fine particles) and its influence on the stability of the soil by mixing coarse and fine particles at varying proportions. A series of discrete element method triaxial shear tests were conducted on binary geotechnical mixtures with a varying proportion of coarse content (25%, 50% and 75%) and different mixing degrees (ranging from 0.0 to 1.0). The macroscopic results show that the peak shear strength increases with an increase in mixing degree, and the increase is more obvious with increasing coarse content, while the critical shear strength is independent of the mixing degree. The main evaluation of the number, mean normal force and distribution of the coarse–fine (cf) contact helps to clarify the meso-mechanisms that result in the variations in peak shear strength and critical shear strength with mixing degree. The increase in the peak strength may primarily be due to the increased number and globalized distribution of coarse–fine contact. However, the decreased contact force of coarse–fine contact counterbalances the strength gain due to the increased number and globalized distribution, which maintain the stability of the critical strength.

The Influence of Mixing Degree between Coarse and Fine Particles on the Strength of Offshore and Coast Foundations

Coarse aggregate is the major part of asphalt mixture, and plays an essential role in mechanical performance of pavement structure. However, the use of poor-quality coarse recycled aggregate (CRA) reduces the strength and stability of the aggregate skeleton. It is a challenge to predict accurately the influence of CRA on the performance of asphalt mixture. In this study, both a uniaxial compression test and a direct tensile test were carried out to evaluate the failure strength of asphalt concrete with four CRA content. The discrete element method (DEM) was applied to simulate the specimen of asphalt concrete considering the distribution and properties of CRA. The results showed that temperature and loading rate have a significant influence on failure strength, especially when the CRA content was more than 20%. With the increase of CRA content, both cohesion force and internal friction angle were gradually weakened. The proposed model can be used to predict the failure strength of asphalt mixture, since both experimental and simulated results had a high consistency and repeatability. With the decrease of CRA strength, the nominal cohesion force of the specimen decreased, while the internal friction angle increased.

Effect of Coarse Recycled Aggregate on Failure Strength for Asphalt Mixture Using Experimental and DEM Method

Granular base material (GBM) is widely used as the base/subbase course of pavement structure. In the mechanic–empirical design of flexible pavement, both the resilient modulus and permanent deformation are the major deformation properties of base materials, related to early-stage distresses of the surface layer under traffic loading. However, since the microscopic interaction between aggregates of the GBM is quite complex, the deformation behavior was not to be understood merely empirically. This study aims to evaluate the macroscopic and microscopic behavior of the GBM under repeated load triaxial (RLT) testing by the discrete-element method. Both the size gradation and the aggregate shape were considered in numerical simulations. The modeling technology of a heterogeneous structure was developed and verified by laboratory results. The results showed that the resilient modulus measured by the developed simulation was in good agreement with that of laboratory tests, within errors of 5.0%. The deformation behavior of the GBM presents the stress-hardening characteristic that the resilient modulus of the GBM increases from 94.03 to 337.71 MPa with the growth of the volume stress and deviator stress. The microstructure of the GBM maintain a relatively stabilization in dynamic response and anisotropy changes during the cyclic loading and voids within aggregates play a role in buffering the change in internal stress. The principal contact normal trends to the direction of maximum bulk stress through small motions, and rotations of aggregates during the loading. It provides a robust mechanism for the resistance to deformation, which results in dispersing more stresses into the skeleton.
