Water polluted with heavy-metal ion has been a major problem in recent years. Among various metal ions, nickel(II) is a priority pollutant commonly found in industrial wastewater. As a highly toxic element at an elevated concentration, Ni(II) can pose a serious threat to our ecological environment as well as human being. Ni(II) adsorption from wastewater is a must for environmental management and sustainability. Remediation of Ni(II) contaminated water is possible through adsorption onto various innovative adsorbents from the aquatic environment. The current review looks at the present status of the research done so far Ni(II) adsorption using various adsorbents from wastewater. Ni(II) adsorption kinetics, edges, isotherm, thermodynamic parameters, and Ni(II) adsorption mechanism have also been talked over. Efforts have also been made to steer out of the advantages and disadvantages of adsorbents and the future research need in Ni(II) adsorption by adsorbents. Agricultural based substrates and nanosized metal oxides have been found a hopeful alternative for Ni(II) adsorption from wastewater. The Ni(II) primarily adsorbed onto a homogeneous substrate forming a monolayer. Ni(II) generally formed outer-sphere complexes at low pH values while it formed inner-sphere complexes at higher pH. More than one species is being sorbed, or more than one type of surface site is involved in Ni(II) adsorption process or both. However, significant research is needed to understand Ni(II)-surface interaction mechanism at the solid-water interface. This review can fill the lacuna of researchers who would like to do more research in this related area in depth.

A review on nickel(II) adsorption in single and binary component systems and future path

This review discusses recent advances in the synthesis, characterization and toxicity of metal oxide nanoparticles obtained mainly through biogenic (green) processes. The in vitro and in vivo toxicities of these oxides are discussed including a consideration of the factors important for safe use of these nanomaterials. The toxicities of different metal oxide nanoparticles are compared. The importance of biogenic synthesized metal oxide nanoparticles has been increasing in recent years; however, more studies aimed at better characterizing the potent toxicity of these nanoparticles are still necessary for nanosafely considerations and environmental perspectives. In this context, this review aims to inspire new research in the design of green approaches to obtain metal oxide nanoparticles for biomedical and technological applications and to highlight the critical need to fully investigate the nanotoxicity of these particles.

In this paper, we have established for the first time, the terrific efficiency of aqueous extract of agricultural waste dried peel of sugar apple (Annona squamosa) in the rapid synthesis of stable SnO2 nanoparticles. In topical years, the deployment of secondary metabolites from plant extract has emerged as a novel technology for the synthesis of various nanoparticles. In this paper, we have studied the potential of SnO2 nanoparticles assembly using agricultural waste source for the first time. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized and confirmed as SnO2 nanoparticles by using UV-visible spectroscopy, XRD, and TEM analysis. The motivation of this study was to examine cytotoxicity study of SnO2 nanoparticles against hepatocellular carcinoma cell line (HepG2). SnO2 nanoparticles inhibited the cell proliferation in a dose- and time-dependent manner with an IC50 value of 148 μg/mL. The treated cells showed an altered morphology with increasing concentrations of SnO2 nanoparticles. Our result shows that the SnO2 nanoparticles exhibit moderate cytotoxicity towards the hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) at tested concentrations.

Magnetotactic bacteria and magnetosomes – Scope and challenges

Heavy metal contamination of surface water bodies and ground water has been a major problem around the world. Calcium-based adsorbents are effective but cannot be separated easily after the treatment. Magnetosomes are biogenic magnetite synthesised as highly ordered chain-like structures by magnetotactic bacteria. In this study, we have prepared magnetically controlled calcite microcrystals using magnetosomes for the adsorption experiment. The ability of magnetic calcite as adsorbent was investigated for the removal of Cr (III) and Ni (II) ions from synthetic solution. Critical parameters, such as the effect of pH, temperature, contact time, initial ion concentration, and adsorbent dose, were optimised in comparison with calcite, magnetosomes, and activated carbon for maximum metal ion removal. The study showed that equilibrium was established in 1 h for both Cr (III) and Ni (II) at a pH of 6.0 and 8.0, respectively. The adsorption process follows pseudo-second-order reaction kinetics, along with Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms. The thermodynamics of adsorption of both metal ions on magnetic calcite showed that the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic in nature. Magnetically controlled calcite crystals successfully removed Cr (III) and Ni (II) from collected tannery effluent and separated from the solution by applying magnetic field. Maximum removal of chromium and nickel (94 and 84%) by magnetic calcite is similar to calcite crystals but higher than magnetosomes and activated carbon. The results indicated that magnetic calcite could be used as an alternative adsorbent for removing heavy metals from tannery effluent. Bacterial magnetosomes coated with calcite can adsorb heavy metals from industrial waste while being easily recoverable with a magnet. The tanning industry produces large volumes of wastewater contaminated with heavy metals, and these toxins require removal prior to waste discharge into the environment. Calcium carbonate adsorbs heavy metals with high efficiency, but is difficult to recover from treated water, lowering water quality. A team led by Krish Suthindhiran at VIT University in India combine environmentally-innocent magnetosomes—magnetic iron-based minerals enveloped by lipid membranes and produced by magnetotactic bacteria—with a calcium carbonate coating to achieve materials that not only remove Cr(III) and Ni(II) from tannery effluents with efficiencies of up to 94% and 84%, but are easily separated post-treatment by application of a magnetic field.

Removal of Cr (III) and Ni (II) from tannery effluent using calcium carbonate coated bacterial magnetosomes.

The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution to the environment is a major threat to the living organisms, and hence the degradation of these PAHs is necessary. Studies on PAHs degrading bacteria have focussed on terrestrial microbes and the potential of marine derived microbes is undermined. Herein we report the isolation and characterization of PAHs degrading Burkholderia sp. from lagoon sediments collected at the Southern coast of India. The strain was Gram negative, rod-shaped, motile, and ∼2–5 μm in length. Based on the phylogenetic data the strain was identified as Burkholderia and designated as VITRSB1. Initial PAHs degradation ability of the strain was assessed using basal salt medium supplemented with diesel, kerosene, toluene, aniline, naphthalene, and phenol. The strain was found to be effectively degrading kerosene, diesel, toluene, and aniline even at higher concentration (1%). However, naphthalene and aniline were degraded only at lower concentration (0.1%) and phenol, camphor, and DAP inhibited the growth of the strain. Furthermore, the degraded end products of the PAHs were determined using FTIR. Notably, none of the end products were found to be toxic to the biosphere. Our results indicate that the isolated Burkholderia sp. could be a prospective candidate for the effective degradation of selective PAHs.
