In the present work, a probabilistic seismic hazard analysis has been performed for the newly formed Warangal Urban District, Telangana, India. The standard Cornell–McGuire method has been adopted considering different seismic zones. The area of influence chosen is having a radius of 500 km with NIT Warangal as the centre. An earthquake catalogue for the period 1800–2016 AD has been compiled and homogenized using global empirical relationships. Alternative models have been considered for seismic zoning scenario, completeness analysis of earthquake catalogue, maximum magnitude and ground-motion prediction equations (GMPEs) in the logic tree approach by assigning normalized weighs to each model, thereby reducing the epistemic uncertainty. Seismic hazard has been presented as the peak ground acceleration (PGA) and pseudo-spectral acceleration (PSA) maps at 5% damping for spectral periods T = 0.05, 0.1, 0.5 and 1 s at 2% and 10% probability of exceedance in 50 yrs period. The results obtained were compared with IS: 1893-1 (2016) (Criteria for earthquake resistance design of structures, Part-I. Bureau of Indian Standard, New Delhi, 2016) and NDMA (2011) (Development of probabilistic seismic hazard map of India, Technical Report of the Working Committee of Experts (WCE), National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). Govt. of India, New Delhi, 2011) and they were found to be in excellent agreement. The profile of shear wave velocity (VS) was obtained by using the multichannel analysis of surface wave (MASW) method. The site was characterized as per NEHRP manual based on VS. The obtained shear wave velocity values are used in performing the 1-D ground response. A higher PGA has been observed at surface level when compared with the PGA values obtained at rock level suggesting seismic wave amplification due to subsoil condition.

Site-specific probabilistic seismic hazard assessment for proposed smart city, Warangal

Developing countries have still shortage of housing due to natural disasters. Houses get destroyed wholly or partly and it causes the increase of lack of housing stock of a country. In disaster management cycle, rehabilitation or reconstruction is an important issue to protect, reduce or mitigate the effect of disasters. For sustainable urban development, disaster consideration is as important as it helps to maintain the development growth rate and tries to make sure that the settlements are in a stable way. The paper describes the natural disasters and issues related to proper disaster housing for sustainable urban development on the basis of literature.

Post Disaster Housing Management for Sustainable Urban Development: A Review

At the moment urban agglomeration sees how cities grow and expand within a shorter period by overlooking the existence of natural ecosystem and green spaces. Natural and built components of the urban environment are the main focal point for sustainable regeneration strategies of a city, but unfortunately the small-scale green areas which are closed to people in the cities are given poor attention and as a result various environmental problems are created. This phenomenon raises globally growing concern for sustainable urban development. To ensure sustainable development and healthy living environment, every country sets some obligatory codes of development. In Bangladesh to control urban development and boost living environment, Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC), a comprehensive document, is enacted as officially obligatory codes of development in urban areas, in which setback and maximum ground coverage (MGC) are the two major and foremost important rules to maintain for better area planning. Chittagong is the second largest city and commercial capital of Bangladesh and is enriched with mountains, forest, rivers, canals, coastal belt, ancient shrines, and historical structures. In Chittagong city, urban areas become a junk of concrete with its grey pockets lacking green spaces resulting from insensible planning and irresponsible behavior of its citizen. The Anannya Residential Area was developed in 2004 by Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) in Chittagong City which is not fully developed yet. The main concern of this chapter is to rethink residential setback and MGC rules of BNBC from a sustainable regeneration strategy perspective and to suggest several ideas of creating green spaces that can be taken into consideration to recover and enrich the sustainable environmental quality of the urban areas.
