Recent developments and applications of protective silicone coatings: A review of PDMS functional materials

Here, we have reviewed brief ideas of fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces and their important applications, which were discussed in the concluded national/international workshops and conferences organized by different industries and laboratories of ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization), DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organization) and AERB (Atomic Energy Regulatory Board) in the last four years. A comprehensive overview of wettability, development of fabrication, techniques for artificial superhydrophobic surfaces and their natures and low surface energy materials along with surface texture is presented successfully. The purpose of this review is to assist future development to make robust superhydrophobic surfaces.

Lignin is a phenolic natural polymer, second only to cellulose. It can be extracted from lignocellulosic biomass through various chemical, physical, mechanical, and enzymatic treatments. The chemical structure and properties of the extracted lignin are mainly depended on the extraction method, vegetal species, location, season, etc. Based on the separation method, several types of lignin, also called technical lignin, could be obtained, including alkali lignin/kraft lignin, lignosulfonate, organosolv lignin, milled wood lignin (MWL), klason lignin, and hydrolytic lignin. The separation conditions can influence the cross-linked structure and molecular weight distributions of the technical lignin products. By far, lignin is mainly regarded waste or by-product streams from paper pulping mills and cellulosic ethanol plants with a limited application for heat and power generation. However, the abundant availability and unique structure of lignin make it a potential feedstock for the synthesis of biochemicals and biopolymers such as surfactants/dispersants, carbon fibers, phenolic resins, epoxy resins, and polyurethane resins, etc.

Conversion of Lignin into Bio-Based Chemicals and Materials

Lignin was extracted from Sal leaves by treating with alkaline solution followed by acidification at room temperature. The extracted lignin was first purified by hot water extraction followed by soxhlet extraction with cyclohex- ane and ethanol mixture. This purified lignin was epoxidized with epichlorohydrin in alkaline medium. FTIR, UV-Visible, TGA and DTA techniques were used to characterize the lignin and its epoxidized form. FTIR spectra are comparable with other lignin structure in the literature. UV-Visible spectra show a long absorption band in the visible region other than the usual absorption in the UV region. The epoxidized form was mixed with epoxy based primer coating and coated on metal panel for corrosion studies by electrochemical analyzer. The Tafel plot shows that the corrosion rate increases with increase in lignin content in the paint composition.
