The drying of a spherical particle containing colloidal material into a hollow sphere

A process for separating an extract component from a raffinate component contained in a feed mixture. A unidirectional fluid flow system is maintained through a series of separating units through which the components travel at different rates. A component concentration distribution is established within the system of units and divided into specific zones. Feed and displacement fluid are passed into the inlets of two of the units and extract and raffinate are taken as the entire streams from outlets of two of the units all at appropriate points on the component concentration distribution. Other inlets and outlets of the various units lying in the same zone are interconnected. At the appropriate times the inlets and outlets are shifted so as to simulate movement of the units in a direction co-current with the fluid flow and thereby enable the inlets and outlets to continually lie in the appropriate zones. Zones may be combined as zone pairs, each such pair thereupon being considered a single continuous zone. For each such combination, the number of separating units required may be reduced by one. Such combinations would be warranted in instances where a lesser degree of purity, concentration or recovery of a given component would be acceptable.

High efficiency continuous separation process

The drying ofolatile solents from a coated film is a complicated process since it inoles simultaneous heat and mass transfer controlled by complex transport and thermodynamic behaior of polymer solutions. In this work, a model is deeloped to describe the drying behaior of multicomponent polymer solutions deposited on the impermeable substrate. A key component of the model is incorporation of multicompo- nent diffusion coefficients that consist of thermodynamic factors and self-diffusiities. Vrentas-Duda free-¤olume theory was used for predicting concentration and tempera- ture dependency of self-diffusion coefficients. Drying processes in oens with different zones in which temperature, ¤elocity, andror partial pressure of each solentary from zone to zone are considered. The predictions from the models proide detailed informa- tion about the relatie importance of internal and external resistances to drying, effect of operating conditions, effect of the multiple-zone approach, as well as sensitiity of all physical properties on the drying rate. Thealidity of the model was confirmed by com- paring predictions with the drying data aailable in the literature and the data collected in our laboratories. The experimental data and the simulation results are in good agree- ment.

Modeling of multicomponent drying of polymer films

A process for separating an extract component from a raffinate component contained in a feed mixture. The units are interconnected in series so as to form a single closed loop. A component concentration distribution is established within the system of units so as to comprise a series of zones. Feed and displacement fluid are each mixed with a different intercolumn stream prior to being passed into the inlets of two of the units and extract and raffinate are taken only as portions of streams from outlets of two or more of the units at appropriate points on the component concentration distribution. At the appropriate times the inlets and outlets are shifted so as to simulate movement of the units in a direction downstream with respect to the direction of fluid flow and thereby enable the inlets and outlets to continually lie in the appropriate zones.

Drying of coated film of polyvinylalcohol (PVA) aqueous solution is studied theoretically and experimentally, focusing on the diffusion process of water and the volumetric shrinkage of film occurring by evaporation of water The diffusion coefficients were measured over the whole range of concentration by three methods, and drying experiments of coated films using hot air were performed Numerical solutions were obtained from a set of transport equations for water using the observed diffusion coefficients and were compared with the experimental results

A method for separating a starting fluid containing at least one component which is easy to adsorb and at least one component which is hard to adsorb into the respective components by the use of an adsorption separator which comprises a packed bed where an adsorbent for such components is packed and a fluid passage connecting the front and rear ends of said packed bed so that the fluid is able to be circulated, the method comprising the first step of feeding the starting fluid to an intermediate portion of the packed bed while withdrawing from the separator a fluid rich with either of the components in an amount equal to the feed of the starting fluid from a position downstream of the feed port, the second step of stopping the feed of the fluid to and the withdrawal of the fluid from the separator and moving the fluid remaining in the separator toward the downward direction, and the third step of feeding a desorbent fluid to the separator and simultaneously withdrawing from the separator a fluid rich with either of the components in an amount equal to the feed of the desorbent fluid from a position downstream of the desorbent feed port, the respective withdrawals of fluid from the separator being conducted at least two different positions, the adsorption bands being left in part of the packed bed in the third step. Apparatus for carrying out the method is disclosed.

A method of separating 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene from a feed material containing a mixture of dimethylnaphthalene isomers comprises the steps of: adsorption separation using an adsorbent of a zeolite Y containing alkali metal or zinc and a desorbent of an organic solvent mainly composed of paraxylene and/or orthoxylene to obtain a solution consisting of the desorbent and the feed material containing 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene at a concentration of at least 60 wt % on the feed material other than desorbent; and crystallization of the solution having a concentration of the desorbent at 30 to 90 wt % to obtain 2,6-dimehtylnaphthalene of high purity in a crystalline form.
