Fungal decay resistance and durability of organosilicon-treated wood

The interaction of wood with water is a primary factor for degradation of the substrate. Organosilicons are known to behave like a water repellent, thus they are in discussion as protecting agents for wood used outdoors. In the present paper, the influence of water on organosilicon treated material was investigated. Solid Scots pine sapwood was impregnated or treated superficially with low concentrations of organosilicons and evaluated for several water related characteristics. The results confirm the water repellent properties of organosilicons as the polysiloxane film increases the contact angle between water and the wood substrate. However, they do not influence the total uptake of moisture but can change the rate at which moisture is taken up, and as such, prolong the service life of the substrate. In general, impregnated specimens behave better than dipped ones. To gain more insight in the exact behavior, continuous moisture uptake experiments are needed in real outdoor exposure tests.

Impact of organosilicon treatments on the wood-water relationship of solid wood

Abstract The green synthesis of nanoparticles is of considerable interest because it is eco-friendly, cost-effective, biocompatible, and non-toxic. Split pulse extract was used as a reducing/capping agent for the synthesis of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles. Green synthesized nanoparticles were embedded in the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane by using a solution casting technique to develop a nanocomposite. This thin film was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning probe microscopy, high-resolution scanning electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and contact angle analysis. The antibacterial property of the TiO2/PDMS nanocomposite was examined, and the results showed excellent antibacterial activity of TiO2/PDMS compared to PDMS without nanoparticles. The nanocomposite film exhibited antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles in the polymer. Here, different weight percentages of TiO2 nanoparticles, i.e. 0%, 7%, 10%, and 13%, were loaded on the PDMS surface to enhance its antibacterial activity. The green synthesis of TiO2 nanoparticles embedded in PDMS and their suitability for antibacterial activity are reported for the first time.

Adsorptive and Membrane-type Separations: A Bibliographical Update (1999)

As part of a study to assess the efficacy of impregnation for masonry materials, the impregnation of earth substrates with soluble sodium silicate followed by water-based silane/siloxane emulsion was investigated. The treatment was found to be successful in achieving water repellent and consolidation effects for the earth substrates. The water repellent effect is developed by the silane/siloxane emulsion which forms a polysiloxane thin film on the capillary wall surface through siloxane bonds. The water repellent effect is greatly enhanced by pre-impregnation with the silicate. The consolidation of the earth substrate by soluble sodium silicate is caused by the silicate gel formed by crosslinking with the substrate. The water repellent and consolidation effects in the earth substrates have been studied by using water absorption tests and FTIR examination.
