Although gold is the subject of one of the most ancient themes of investigation in science, its renaissance now leads to an exponentially increasing number of publications, especially in the context of emerging nanoscience and nanotechnology with nanoparticles and self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). We will limit the present review to gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), also called gold colloids. AuNPs are the most stable metal nanoparticles, and they present fascinating aspects such as their assembly of multiple types involving materials science, the behavior of the individual particles, size-related electronic, magnetic and optical properties (quantum size effect), and their applications to catalysis and biology. Their promises are in these fields as well as in the bottom-up approach of nanotechnology, and they will be key materials and building block in the 21st century. Whereas the extraction of gold started in the 5th millennium B.C. near Varna (Bulgaria) and reached 10 tons per year in Egypt around 1200-1300 B.C. when the marvelous statue of Touthankamon was constructed, it is probable that “soluble” gold appeared around the 5th or 4th century B.C. in Egypt and China. Interparticle Coupling Effect on the Surface Plasmon Resonance of Gold Nanoparticles: From Theory to Applications

A new class of materials for catalysis have been intensively investigated, that is, ‘bimetallic nanoparticles’. Extensive studies of non-supported bimetallic nanoparticle dispersions, stabilized by polymers or ligands, started only about 10 years ago. Many preparative procedures have been proposed, and detailed characterizations have been carried out on bimetallic nanoparticles, thanks to the rapid improvement of analytical technology on surface and nanoscale materials. In this review, we focus on the preparation, characterization and application to catalysis of polymer- or ligand-stabilized bimetallic nanoparticles in dispersion, emphasizing our own work and introducing recent progress of this area.

Bimetallic nanoparticles—novel materials for chemical and physical applications

New fields of research in chemistry and physics require improved synthetic techniques for colloidal metal particles. This paper reports a generally applicable technique for synthesizing colloidal Au particles of mean diameters between 20 and 100 nm that exhibit improved monodispersity relative to previously published methods. In this approach (called “seeding”) Au3+ is reduced on the surface of preformed 12-nm-diameter Au nanoparticles by introduction of boiling sodium citrate, producing particles highly uniform in size and shape. A similar procedure, utilizing the reductant NH2OH at room temperature, produces two populations of particles; the larger population is even more spherical than citrate-reduced particles of similar size, while the smaller population is very distinctly rod-shaped.

Seeding of Colloidal Au Nanoparticle Solutions. 2. Improved Control of Particle Size and Shape

In this work, we investigate the catalytic properties of silver nanoparticles supported on silica spheres. The technique to support silver particles on silica spheres effectively avoids flocculation of nanosized colloidal metal particles during a catalytic process in the solution, which allows one to carry out the successful catalytic reduction of dyes. The effects of electrolytes and surfactants on the catalytic properties of silver particles on silica have been investigated. It is found that the presence of surfactants depresses the catalytic activity of the silver particles to some extent by inhibiting the adsorption of reactants onto the surface of the particles. Electrolytes either increase the migration rate of reactants in the solution resulting in an increase in the catalytic reaction rate or inhibit the adsorption of reactants onto the surface of the silver particles leading to a loss in the activity of the metal particles.

Catalytic properties of silver nanoparticles supported on silica spheres.

Covalent attachment of nanometer-scale colloidal Au particles to organosilane-coated substrates is a flexible and general approach to formation of macroscopic Au surfaces that have well-defined nanostructure. Variations in substrate (glass, metal, Al2O3), geometry (planar, cylindrical), functional group (−SH, −P(C6H5)2, −NH2, −CN), and particle diameter (2.5−120 nm) demonstrate that each component of these assemblies can be changed without adverse consequences. Information about particle coverage and interparticle spacing has been obtained using atomic force microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and quartz crystal microgravimetry. Bulk surface properties have been probed with UV−vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and surface enhanced Raman scattering. Successful application of the latter two techniques indicates that these substrates may have value for Raman and electrochemical measurements.
