Journal ArticleDOI
Multidetector Computed Tomography for Acute Pulmonary Embolism
Paul D. Stein,Sarah E. Fowler,Lawrence R. Goodman,Alexander Gottschalk,Charles A. Hales,Russell D. Hull,Kenneth V. Leeper,John Popovich,Deborah A. Quinn,Thomas A. Sos,H. Dirk Sostman,Victor F. Tapson,Thomas W. Wakefield,John G. Weg,Pamela K. Woodard +14 more
TL;DR: In patients with suspected pulmonary embolism, multidetector CTA-CTV has a higher diagnostic sensitivity than does CTA alone, with similar specificity, and additional testing is necessary when the clinical probability is inconsistent with the imaging results.
Journal ArticleDOI
Treatment of severe pneumonia in hospitalized patients: results of a multicenter, randomized, double-blind trial comparing intravenous ciprofloxacin with imipenem-cilastatin. The Severe Pneumonia Study Group.
Mitchell P. Fink,David R. Snydman,Michael S. Niederman,Kenneth V. Leeper,Royce H. Johnson,Stephen O. Heard,Richard G. Wunderink,John W. Caldwell,Jerome J. Schentag,Ghodrat A. Siami +9 more
TL;DR: Monotherapy with ciprofloxacin is at least equivalent to monotherapy with imipenem in terms of bacteriological eradication and clinical response, and for both treatment groups, the presence of P. aeruginosa had a negative impact on treatment success.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ventilator-associated pneumonia due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
TL;DR: Development of Pseudomonas pneumonia results in a mortality rate in excess of that due to the presenting illness, and improvement in therapy is needed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Clinical Characteristics of Patients with Acute Pulmonary Embolism: Data from PIOPED II
Paul D. Stein,Afzal Beemath,Fadi Matta,John G. Weg,Roger D. Yusen,Charles A. Hales,Russell D. Hull,Kenneth V. Leeper,H. Dirk Sostman,Victor F. Tapson,John D. Buckley,Alexander Gottschalk,Lawrence R. Goodman,Thomas W. Wakefied,Pamela K. Woodard +14 more
TL;DR: Signs and symptoms were similar in elderly and younger patients, but dyspnea or tachypnea was less frequent in elderly patients with no previous cardiopulmonary disease, and a high or intermediate-probability objective clinical assessment suggests the need for diagnostic studies.
Journal ArticleDOI
The diagnostic approach to acute venous thromboembolism. Clinical practice guideline. American Thoracic Society.
