The Reality of the Mass Media

As a world civilisational phenomenon occurring at the turn of the 20th–21st centuries, globalism has affected not only politics and economics, but also culture. Moreover, due to the expanding system of media communications and increasing mobility of images and symbols of the information age, which has profoundly affected methods of thinking and system of science and education, the globalisation of the world socio-cultural space can be seen as reflecting many aspects of the current “spirit of the time”. For this reason, various discussions currently taking place in the humanities are related to the nature and consequences of cultural globalisation including the sphere of language technologies, which influences the dialogue of cultures in the globalised world. On 24th–25th April 2020, the online International Conference “Dialogue of Cultures in the Age of Globalization and Digitalization” took place. The Conference was organised by the Chair of Cultural Studies and Socio-Cultural Activity of the Ural Federal University along with the Ural Branch of the ScientificEducational Society of Cultural Studies of Russia. Papers in the current issue of Changing Societies & Personalities are devoted to the main theme of the conference, including the language of culture. It was Martin Heidegger who put forward the idea that language is the “house of being” of humanity (Heidegger, 1927/1993, p. 220). In this regard, the methods of language formation, its evolution, main trends and development are the subject of research interest, which also includes the language of media culture as an information-age phenomenon that affects the process of globalisation. An important factor of contemporary media culture is how representations of reality in the context of globalisation and digitalisation increasingly affect public consciousness and the process of socialisation on individual level. Media culture of a globalised world: Evolution of language technologies

The article raises the question of transformations of screen culture in the XXth–XXIst centuries. Screen culture as a phenomenon of audiovisual synthesis has gone a long way from the moment of its inception (photography, invention of cinema, later the development of radio, television, and video) to a wave of ‘digital revolution’ that has produced the new forms of screen art, manifested not only in the digitization of cinema, photo, and television products, but also in computer technologies, online social networks, etc. It was the screen culture that became the construct of such a phenomenon as ‘virtual reality’.

The Transformation of Screen Culture As a Phenomenon of Information Age

The artistic explorations of the late XXth–early XXIst-century mediaculture are, to a large extent, aimed at overcoming stagnant and crisis elements in society, as well as at rethinking the global problem engendered by the increasing levels of alienation and a fear of global transformations. Social photography offers deep and comprehensive critical analysis of the contemporary events. This photographic genre is based on the humanistic approach combined with the individual interpretation of difficult situations. The goal of social photography is to trace the possible solutions for global social problems and to confront cruelty, alienation and violence of our modern world.

Social Photography As a Representation Form of Global Challenges at the Turn of the XXth-XXIst Centuries

Strategic Concepts of Media Studies: from Marshall McLuhan to Manuel Castells

The article aims to study the theoretical aspects of the communicative system’s development dynamics in the context of H. M. McLuhan’s historical typology. Adopting the theoretical and comparative analysis methods, the author shows that media, or communicative, culture has evolved significantly over the years. On the basis of McLuhan’s cultural typology, the author conducts a thorough analysis of the historical periods reflecting the evolution process of media culture (the pre-writing era, the millennium of phonetic writing, the “Gutenberg Galaxy”, the “Marconi Galaxy”) and provides a theoretical generalization thereof. The article is brought to conclusion with an analysis of the information era that can be defined, taking into consideration the latest priorities, as the “Internet Galaxy”. Information and communication technologies along with the modern media (computer channels, the Web, mobile communications, D-Cinema, television, photography, multimedia, etc.) have created a global media environment, in which various civilizations and cultures co-exist. Moreover, at the turn of Millennium, people live in two worlds at the same time: in the real world and in virtual reality. Cyberspace has become a popular living environment and a new communication medium for the humankind. Thus, the author recapitulates the conceptual foundations of the media systems’ evolution, going from basic means of communication typical of primitive cultures to the global information space where the dialogue and polylogue of cultures and their interaction are thought to be perspective ways of communication between civilizations.
