TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of positive and negative attitudes towards refugees as well as of mainstream media, social media and interpersonal communication on hostile media perceptions was examined from an audience perspective.
Abstract: In the actual debate on refugees in Germany the media’s role was heavily disputed. To understand this controversy, this study examines hostile media perceptions from the audience perspective. Building up on previous research on the hostile media phenomenon and considering literature on pro- and anti-immigrant attitudes, this study explores the effect of positive and negative attitudes towards refugees as well as of mainstream media, social media and interpersonal communication on hostile media perceptions. Using survey data (N=1005) and applying structural equation modelling, several hypotheses on the effects of attitudes and communication variables were tested. The results demonstrate that perceptions of media bias are strongly influenced by people’s negative and positive attitudes towards refugees and the basic hostile media hypothesis was confirmed. Moreover, our findings reveal that the perceived intensity of media coverage on contested aspects of the refugee issue also has an effect on perceptions of hostility. However, the various communication variables did not prove to have direct effects, whereas mainstream media use, social media use, and interpersonal communication with refugees had indirect effects on the hostile media perception.

TL;DR: This paper explored Western perspectives of dialogic and persuasive communication that are taught in the foundation year of media and communication tertiary study and compared them with the Islamic perspective, offering an insight into this untapped area.
Abstract: As the dominant global media, Western media face constant ethical challenges. In a fast-paced, fast-changing world post-9/11, Western media have been accused of misrepresenting Islam and Muslims through biased reporting and misinformation. Muslims are often depicted as a homogenous group prone to acts of terrorism. Unsurprisingly, Muslims are cautious, if not resentful, of Western media that perpetuate Islamophobia. There needs to be more discussion on intercultural views of ethical communication if journalists and media outlets are serious about building trust and upholding ethical standards in reporting. Other cultural paradigms in media studies are needed to inform our practice for culturally diverse environments. This paper explores Western perspectives of dialogic and persuasive communication that are taught in the foundation year of media and communication tertiary study and compares them with the Islamic perspective, offering an insight into this untapped area. Unlike the traditional Western conceptual framework of dialogue and persuasion as separate entities that are potentially unethical, the Islamic perspective identifies both models as ethical and not mutually exclusive. One Anglo-based innovative study that applied quantum theory to communication on social media, argued for an interconnected relationship between dialogue and persuasion where the two can become entangled while existing in a state of superposition. It echoes the Islamic view except for the unethical potential and ambivalent application of either model. This preliminary study has implications for the practice of peace and conflict journalism, investigative journalism, and development journalism, which report on issues relating to Islam and the Muslim environments.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explored the effects of social media on youth in contemporary Pakistan especially focusing on the change in family relations and found that the use of SNS among youth is reducing the bonding of the youth with their family and is changing the value system.
Abstract: Social Networking Sites (SNS) are increasingly becoming a focus of discussion in the academic literature across the globe. The current research was conducted to explore the effects of social media on youth in contemporary Pakistan especially focusing on the change in family relations. Under the paradigm of quantitative research methodology the researchers used survey method to collect data. Data was collected through structured questionnaire from 175 Masters level students from the International Islamic University Islamabad who were excessively using SNS. The respondents were selected by using Random sampling technique and stratified sampling technique. The findings show that the majority (94%) of the respondents acknowledged that excessive use of social media affects family relationships negatively. They reported to have experienced being isolated and alienated from relatives, friends and from themselves. This in turn was reported to lead to introvert personalities. In the light of the findings it can be concluded that the use of SNS among youth is reducing the bonding of the youth with their family and is changing the value system.

TL;DR: The study finds that perceived price discount is a key behavioral antecedent for the urge to buy impulsively in social commerce and that its impact is not linear but nonlinear.
Abstract: In this article, we provide a model that captures the decision making process of impulse buying in social commerce (i.e., on online daily deal websites based on social media) and that does not require any parametric assumption on model specification. Especially, we address the change of marginal impact of marketing stimuli and consumer interaction on impulse buying intension in the context of social commerce. The theoretical framework was guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) model. For empirical analysis, the nonparametric regression methodology was applied which allows to capture change of marginal impact without any parametric assumption; Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS). Survey data was collected using a web-based survey system from 500 consumers, who had experienced buying coupons in social commerce. Our study finds that perceived price discount is a key behavioral antecedent for the urge to buy impulsively in social commerce and that its impact is not linear but nonlinear. The contribution of findings of this research is to show how impulse buying intention change with respect to consumer-environment interaction, which has not been addressed thus far in existing research.

TL;DR: The effect of high regulation in the foreign exchange market which in advertently have a determining factor on the performance of business organizations is an issue of concern most especially in industries in Nigeria as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The problem of the effect of high regulation in the foreign exchange market which in advertently have a determining factor on the performance of business organizations is an issue of concern most especially in industries in Nigeria. Data on variables which are relevant to this study like industrial produce, exchange rate, and inflation rate, labour force per time, capital stock and political regulations/ instability were gathered from secondary source like the Central Bank of Nigeria statistical bulletin. The data were analyzed using the ordinary least square econometric technique and the result showed that while both labour and capital are positively significant in explaining industrial produce, inflation was negatively significant in explaining it. This paper thus recommended amongst others that the educational sector should be prioritized by the government in order to have a strong labour force, and also long term funds should be provided for the growth of the manufacturing sector.

TL;DR: The authors examined the influence of the mainstream media and online social media on public perceptions of police legitimacy by reflecting on the findings of two recent studies which examined the public relations practices of the New South Wales (NSW) Police Force, Australia's largest policing jurisdiction.
Abstract: This article examines the influence of the media, old and new, on public perceptions of police legitimacy. The results of two studies, one focussed on the mainstream media and the other on social media, provide a basis for examining the increasingly challenging media environment faced by police organisations. The first study examined media reporting of fraud crime in New South Wales (NSW) and its broader impact on public policy and police decision making; the second examined the NSW Police Force’s use of Facebook to engage with citizens for community policing purposes. Both studies placed significant emphasis on the idea that police must be accepted by the public as legitimate if they are to function effectively, ethically and legally. This article compares the findings of the two studies, contextualising the relative discussions about police engagement with old and new media in a conceptual examination of whether old or new media is of most use to modern police organisations when seeking to enhance legitimacy. It considers whether the way police promote institutional legitimacy has been affected by changes to the media environment, and if policing organisations should be giving more or less attention to old or new media when attempting to maintain and promote legitimacy. Introduction This article examines the influence of the mainstream media and online social media on public perceptions of police legitimacy by reflecting on the findings of two recent studies which examined the public relations practices of the New South Wales (NSW) Police Force, Australia’s largest policing jurisdiction. The first study considered the mainstream media’s reporting of major crime categories and its influence on the police response to these crimes relative to a particular crime’s impact on society. The study hypothesised that fraud offences, despite having the highest cost to society, attract less media coverage than other crime types, such as assaults and drugs. The idea that newspapers have an agenda setting effect on police decision making was also canvassed, and a hypothesis was explored that a lack of media reporting on fraud crime would likely result in less attention being paid to such crimes by law enforcement, and this in turn could impact on public perceptions of police. The second study considered how the NSW Police Force has embraced modern communication technologies by engaging with local communities through Facebook. The study hypothesised that police legitimacy could be enhanced simply by police engaging the citizens who inhabit online communities in two-way http://www.hca.westernsydney.edu.au/gmjau/?p=2927

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explored users' expectations towards digital news content and found that features of content have an impact on payment preferences, while the acceptance of payment models does not differ depending on the news source.
Abstract: When New Technologies Cause Great Firms to Fail.” This is how, in 1997, Clayton Christensen described the situation for media enterprises, particularly the news publishing industry, in his book “The Innovator’s Dilemma”. For decades, publishers operated in an established market, which generated safe revenues. However, this stable economic situation changed with the introduction of the Internet and a “for free” mentality of users. Since then, the total circulation of news publishers has been declining and digital content is on the rise. Even worse, new competitors are entering the field offering digital content and advertising companies have new options for placing their advertisements. The consequence, the publishing industry is on the brink of the most radical change since the invention of printing by Gutenberg: They have to reconsider every single element of their business model. To underline these assumptions, the present study explores users´ expectations towards digital news content. Our findings show that features of content have an impact on payment preferences. At the same time, the acceptance of payment models does not differ depending on the news source. Furthermore we show that brand affinity (towards sources of content) varies between topics. With this study, we mainly consider the changed user behavior and users´ expectations towards digital content in order to de-rive implications on future business models of publishers, in particular on the customer value proposition.

Abstract: The article reviews the complexity, variability, ambiguity and interdisciplinarily of the intercultural adaptation of students while in cross-cultural interaction. Bearing universal traits, the pedagogical approach to this phenomenon deals with a variety of mechanisms to facilitate the alignment of the relations between the present and the future, finds ways to improve flexibility and tolerance for different cultures, to define trajectories for the use of linguistic resources in specific speech situations of intercultural communication, as well as to establish dynamic relationships between a personality and the surrounding reality. Different characteristic features, properties, strategies, conceptual models and functions of the phenomenon discovered are described there. Intercultural adaptation – regarded as the process of merging into personal cultural environment, inherently developing and absorbing its values, principles, standards, norms and behavior patterns – results in the individual’s adaptability to a certain degree. A new vision of the preliminary stage of adaptation is offered. A special attention is paid to the information field which proves to be an efficient means of students’ intercultural adaptability formation.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the functioning peculiarities of certain genres (press release, comment, news) in Internet communication, based on the theories of Bakhtin about the Dialogic nature of genres, Jakobson on verbal genres, and Gajda about modern speech genres.
Abstract: The article shows the functioning peculiarities of certain genres (press release, comment, news) in Internet communication. The study is based on the theories of Bakhtin about the Dialogic nature of genres, Jakobson on verbal genres, and Gajda about modern speech genres. The authors presented the following algorithm of the Internet texts study: the definition of the genre specificity of the Internet text; the revealing of the genre criteria (theme, style, composition, genre and intention); the analysis of the addresser and the addressee roles in the new genre formation or the old one transformation. In online news discourse, the hypertext links are presented not only by headlines, but also by links, both external (the message source) and internal (following the previous messages on the topic). The news items, connected by internal hyperlinks and devoted to one topic and one macro event, form the Plot. If the linear text presents the flashback mainly implicitly, then the hypertext explicates it by means of hyperlinks. It provides the more objective perception of events, compared to the traditional media. The collective, but not the mass reader, is the addressee of the press releases. In this regard, the press release is close, on the one hand, to the official texts and, on the other hand, to publicist texts. Corporate websites of Russian companies have formed the press release varieties, the names of which indicate the target audience of these texts. These include IR-release, the statement of the material fact and IPO news, or IPO releases. The article deals with the features of these varieties and the specificity of their functioning. The development of Internet, particularly the appearance of the Internet style art, has changed the research methods of reflection in verbal creativity. On the one hand, the results of the author's reflection cannot be seen in the texts of the proper online literature (generated texts), since there is no such process in production of these texts. On the other hand, the extension of research possibilities of the creative process reflection is associated, in particular, with the genre of Internet reviews. The comments to the pieces of work open a new field of study – the reader’s reflection, which could be previously studied only by means of survey. The following types of the Internet comments can be distinguished in the Internet communication: the analytical comment and the comment as an emotional response, the co-creative comment and the mixed comment.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors conducted a study on 360 high school students in Kuwait and found that the majority of the participants use Twitter on their smart phone for 3-4 hours per day, and use it to meet new people, to follow the local news, and to discuss and exchange of views.
Abstract: Because of its growing popularity among young adults and its real time nature, Twitter was the social network chosen for this research. Twitter is a social networking site that allows users to produce 140 character bursts of information that are called tweets. Twitter was developed in 2006 to be an outlet for individuals to say what they were doing in the allotted amount of characters (Maxwell, 2012). Twitter gave users the ability to share moments of their lives as they were happening (Williams, 2009). The advantage of being able to send updates in real time led Twitter to be a source of valuable information during natural disasters. Eight percent of Internet users are Twitter users (Smith, 2010). The social networking site is popular among young adults, which makes the high school student population appropriate participants for this study. The study was conducted on 360 of high school students in Kuwait. The data obtained by the survey was analyzed and commented upon using the SPSS program. As the results show, majority of the participants use Twitter on their smart phone for 3-4 hours per day, and use it to meet new people, to follow the local news, and to discuss and exchange of views. Also the results stated that the majority of the students use twitter as a source of information, and never use it as a source of news because the doubt its’ credibility.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors study the theoretical aspects of the communicative system's development dynamics in the context of H. M. McLuhan's historical typology and provide a theoretical generalization thereof.
Abstract: The article aims to study the theoretical aspects of the communicative system’s development dynamics in the context of H. M. McLuhan’s historical typology. Adopting the theoretical and comparative analysis methods, the author shows that media, or communicative, culture has evolved significantly over the years. On the basis of McLuhan’s cultural typology, the author conducts a thorough analysis of the historical periods reflecting the evolution process of media culture (the pre-writing era, the millennium of phonetic writing, the “Gutenberg Galaxy”, the “Marconi Galaxy”) and provides a theoretical generalization thereof. The article is brought to conclusion with an analysis of the information era that can be defined, taking into consideration the latest priorities, as the “Internet Galaxy”. Information and communication technologies along with the modern media (computer channels, the Web, mobile communications, D-Cinema, television, photography, multimedia, etc.) have created a global media environment, in which various civilizations and cultures co-exist. Moreover, at the turn of Millennium, people live in two worlds at the same time: in the real world and in virtual reality. Cyberspace has become a popular living environment and a new communication medium for the humankind. Thus, the author recapitulates the conceptual foundations of the media systems’ evolution, going from basic means of communication typical of primitive cultures to the global information space where the dialogue and polylogue of cultures and their interaction are thought to be perspective ways of communication between civilizations.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyze the methods and technologies for civil society participation in the formation and reproduction of sexual culture of modern Russian youth, focusing on the erotic and emotional and sociocultural components.
Abstract: This article analyzes the methods and technologies for civil society participation in the formation and reproduction of sexual culture of the modern Russian youth. As a part of the social and political discourse the sexual culture is treated in the system of sex (physiological) and gender (social-role) value orientations and behavior practices among the representatives of youth cohorts with a focus on the erotic and emotional and sociocultural components. Based on the results of empirical studies (content analysis of statutory and program documents, depth and expert interviews) the specificity of main directions (educative, ideological and political, socialized, disciplinary, monitoring, human rights, and anti-discriminating) for the activities of different social movements types in the Russian Federation (the RF) is defined.

TL;DR: This paper examined the Facebook Page administered by the Livestrong Foundation in Mexico addressing cancer stigma, in order to elucidate key features of social media regarding the experience of cancer and cancer stigma in Mexico.
Abstract: Social networking sites (SNS) can serve as modern platforms to address diseasespecific stigma, especially in Mexico where cancer stigma impedes healthcare access. This study examines the Facebook Page administered by the Livestrong Foundation in Mexico addressing cancer stigma, in order to elucidate key features of social media regarding the experience of cancer and cancer stigma in Mexico. The study is unique for its focus on a public online platform involving both support and outreach, as existing studies examine more exclusive forums for social support alone. We employ a mixed-methods approach involving qualitative analysis of posts and quantitative analysis of usage trends, focusing on January 1 to June 30, 2013 to encompass Livestrong Day. The 28 posts during this time period reached a total of 28,049 viewing users and 230 interacting users. As hypothesized, most support arose from strangers, consisting of primarily emotional and informational support, with most emotional support from women compared to men. The theme of empowerment appeared frequently within cancer narratives. Emotional support and narratives garnered the most user responses. Anti-stigma campaigns might further leverage users’ primary interest in emotional support by featuring narratives of recovery and empowerment to reach a broader and more interactive audience.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of post consolidation activities of Nigerian deposit money banks on real sector development was examined, where the interactive influences of the Real Sector Gross Domestic Product (RSGDP) and other post consolidation variables like Commercial Banks Deposit (CBD), Credit to Private Sector as a percentage of GDP (CPGDP), Number of Banks Branches (NBB), Commercial Banks Capital (CBC) and proxy of Political Stability (POL) were measured.
Abstract: Deposit money banks (DMBs) are believed to be the engine for real economic growth. DMBs are expected to adequately cover the funding gap of the real sector by government resulting from market shocks, especially in developing countries like Nigeria. In this light, this paper examined the effect of post consolidation activities of Nigerian deposit money banks on real sector development. The interactive influences of the Real Sector Gross Domestic Product (RSGDP) and other post consolidation variables like Commercial Banks Deposit (CBD), Credit to Private Sector as a percentage of GDP (CPGDP), Number of Banks Branches (NBB), Commercial Banks Capital (CBC) and proxy of Political Stability (POL) were measured. Analyzing time series data ranging from 1981-2014, the econometric results obtained from co-integration test, unit root test, causality test, over parameterization model and error correction model (ECM) revealed the following: (1) the existence of a significant longrun relationship among the variables and three co-integrating relationships at 1% level of significance; (2) there is convergence of the variables from the short run to the long run though with relatively low speed of adjustment; (3) there is a significant negative relationship between RSGDP and banks’ deposit, credit to the private sector and number of branches but positive relationship with banks’ capital and political stability. The paper thus concludes that the post consolidation activities of Nigerian DMBs have not sufficiently supported sustainable real sector development in Nigeria.

TL;DR: The role of Vietnamese journalism in the coverage of this commemorative date as well as the history and events it is linked with is discussed in this article, which addresses the question of how coming to terms with the past plays out in the journalistic field of an increasingly globally connected and economically continuously growing Vietnam.
Abstract: April 30th, 2015 marked the 40th anniversary of the end of the war in Vietnam. This article discusses the role of Vietnamese journalism in the coverage of this commemorative date as well as the history and events it is linked with. It addresses the question of how coming to terms with the past plays out in the journalistic field of an increasingly globally connected and economically continuously growing Vietnam. By means of qualitative content analysis and expert interviews with Vietnamese media professionals the paper characterizes the nature of anniversary journalism on this particular event and elaborates on its meaning for the construction of cultural memory in Vietnam. In that context, it also touches upon transnational relations with and controversies of remembrance in Vietnamese diasporic communities. The study found that anniversary journalism in Vietnam goes beyond the mere coverage of a single commemorated day along state ideological lines and constitutes part of a larger context of cultural memory in Vietnam and the diaspora. It is itself subject to change over time and of tensions between state, economic, professional and personal interests in a vastly changing, but still state-controlled media environment. Such tensions can result in ambiguities, vagueness and the coexistence of a variety of narratives in the reporting. Despite slight liberation tendencies, however, anniversary journalism on the contentious meaning of April 30th does not represent a transnational forum for negotiating the past in Vietnam and its diaspora.

TL;DR: This paper examined the discourse processes and ethics of framing particular media stories and constructing particular narratives about Islam and Muslims in the official website of the Middle East Forum (MEF), a well-established neoconservative American think tank which specializes in Middle East.
Abstract: This paper draws on framing theory and narrative theory as two influential theoretical approaches to the analysis of discourse and communication. It looks into the discourse processes and ethics of framing particular media stories and constructing particular narratives about Islam and Muslims in the official website of the Middle East Forum (MEF), a well-established neoconservative American think tank which specializes in the Middle East. The study examines a representative sample of articles from the website and proposes a model of editorial media discourse analysis based on a problem-solution framing paradigm and a narrative ethical evaluation platform. Findings uncover that the problemsolution frame, which is built on a problem-culprit-cause-solution base and which represents the frame’s cognitive structure is systematically utilized. Four types of framing (religious, political, cultural, and military), two forms (verbal and semiotic), and two functions (persecution and isolation) have been detected, constructing persecutive narratives of Muslims as the villains and of Islam as antiWestern, anti-Semitic, and incompatible with modernity. The ethical evaluation shows that these belligerent narratives violate basic standards of ethics and dialogue.

TL;DR: The authors examined media discourses on the relationship between migrant families and communication technology and found that the roles of cell phones in their lives are portrayed in the following narratives: 1) cell phones are highly valuable for connecting family members living apart; 2) Cell phones are used as a problemsolver in charity giving and rural development projects; 3) Cell phone can bring unexpected risks to children lacking media literacy; and 4) cell phone could harbour or unleash evil, associated with increasing cases of juvenile delinquency or crime stories.
Abstract: Through critical analysis of selected news stories from sina.com from 2010 to 2015 about cell phones and “left-behind children” in China, this article examines media discourses on the relationship between migrant families and communication technology. The author finds that the roles of cell phones in their lives are portrayed in the following narratives: 1) cell phones are highly valuable for connecting family members living apart; 2) cell phones are used as a problemsolver in charity giving and rural development projects; 3) cell phones can bring unexpected risks to children lacking media literacy; and 4) cell phones could harbour or unleash evil—associated with increasing cases of juvenile delinquency or crime stories. The author discusses how the different institutional goals of social agencies, corporations, educators, and law enforcement contribute to the polarity of the discourses, reflecting the societal anxieties over unsupervised use of mobile devices by adolescents, as well as the cultural and political implications of empowering the “have-nots” of the digital divide by improving access to communication technology.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identify the main types of Internet-behavior and compare their characteristics among the inhabitants of different countries, and argue that national models, in which "innovators", "traditionalists", "entertained", "pragmatic" dominate, are the most effective.
Abstract: This study is aimed at identifying the main types of Internet-behavior and comparing their characteristics among the inhabitants of different countries. Respondents’ Internet-behavior typology is carried out based on the results of opinion polls that have been conducted in 13 World Internet Project member countries (China, Chile, Republic of Cyprus, Mexico, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, South Africa, Taiwan, UK, Uruguay and USA). This typology includes social clusters: "innovators", "traditionalists", "entertained", "pragmatic" and "disconnected". Settings of Internet intensity use and consumed content are quantitative and qualitative criteria for their differentiation. The research presents detailed characteristics of selected types of Internet behavior. Authors compare the proportion of their prevalence in each of studied countries, describe and define the specifics of determinism. Overall, the findings indicate that the characteristics of the national structure of types of Internet behaviors are driven both by levels of ICTs development and by social factors. Abstract: The article is devoted to the impact of modern information society through the artistic perception. Authors, who are the professors of Moscow universities, conclude that the interest in literature among young people is quite considerable. At the same time, it is important to note that the main area in which young writers tend to be recognized is the Internet. The main feature of modern social and cultural situation is creation of the global Internet space, providing effective virtual interaction of people, satisfaction of their needs for access to global information resources and services. Revolution in obtaining and storing information has changed the culture and art. Information society is a society in which the popular culture dominates as complex and ambivalent phenomenon. The Internet in modern society is not just a way to communicate, but the center of new culture’s development. The World Wide Web increasingly involves artistic environment, including literary environment. But the loss of skills in-depth perception of the literary text is a very serious psychological problem. Postmodern ideas influence on the gradual loss of the ability to act. Modern students who are accustomed “to live” in a computer, find themselves in a quandary when they are placed in a situation where they have to act, but not talk about action and not to play a computer game, and set realistic goals. The authors show that it is the problem the modern "creative reader" development, they mean the reader, who can take an active readership’s position when the reader can enjoy reading, can give the own interpretation of the text. In the process of education’s modernization, it is important to remember that post-modernism is the reality of social and cultural situation. In this context it is necessary to change the approach to pedagogical work with information and communication technologies.
