Abstract: This paper maps the web presence of environmental nonprofit organizations (ENPOs) in Canada. It focuses upon a sample of 43 websites which were examined in April/May 2009. All of the websites belong to member organizations of the Climate Action Network-Canada, a peak ENPO with collaborative networks in the United States and Europe. Our interest is in examining the extent to which the online activities of ENPOs correspond with a ‘broadcast’ paradigm—based on the principle of one-way information flow—or a two-way ‘dialogical’ paradigm of communication. Special attention is given to addressing the use of social media technologies (Web 2.0) by these ENPOs, including Facebook, Twitter, RSS feeds and blogs. The findings interrogate the tension between instrumental and dialogical forms of communication. They also demonstrate that although there are cases of effective web-based communication by ENPOs, most are not leveraging the potential these technologies afford for constituency engagement, relationship building and conversation. The findings contribute to scholarship on nonprofit communication, environmental communication, social media and public relations.
Abstract: The clash of ignorance thesis presents a critique of the clash of civilizations theory. It challenges the assumptions that civilizations are monolithic entities that do not interact and that the Self and the Other are always opposed to each other. Despite some significantly different values and clashes between Western and Muslim civilizations, they overlap with each other in many ways and have historically demonstrated the capacity for fruitful engagement. The clash of ignorance thesis makes a significant contribution to the understanding of intercultural and international communication as well as to the study of intergroup relations in various other areas of scholarship. It does this by bringing forward for examination the key impediments to mutually beneficial interaction between groups. The thesis directly addresses the particular problem of ignorance that other epistemological approaches have not raised in a substantial manner. Whereas the critique of Orientalism deals with the hegemonic construction of knowledge, the clash of ignorance paradigm broadens the inquiry to include various actors whose respective distortions of knowledge symbiotically promote conflict with each other. It also augments the power-knowledge model to provide conceptual and analytical tools for understanding the exploitation of ignorance for the purposes of enhancing particular groups’ or individuals’ power. Whereas academics, policymakers, think tanks, and religious leaders have referred to the clash of ignorance concept, this essay contributes to its development as a theory that is able to provide a valid basis to explain the empirical evidence drawn from relevant cases.
Abstract: This paper examines the Canadian news media’s coverage of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. In particular, Canadian newspaper headlines are examined for the way in which an image of the “enemy” is constructed and framed in dominant media discourse. An analysis of the data reveals a pattern of dehumanizing language applied to enemy leaders as well as Arab and Muslim citizens at large in the media’s uncritical reproduction of metaphors that linguistically frame the enemy in particular ways. Particularly, the paper argues that the Canadian media have participated in mediating constructions of Islam and Muslims, mobilizing familiar metaphors in representations that fabricate an enemy-Other who is dehumanized, de-individualized, and ultimately expendable. This dehumanizing language takes the form of animal imagery that equates and reduces human actions with sub-human behaviours. This paper argues that the repeated use of animal metaphors by monopoly media institutions constitute motivated representations that have ideological importance. The consequences of these representations are more than rhetorical, setting the stage for racist backlash, prisoner abuse and even genocide.
Abstract: The social media editor, the newsroom liaison to the digital world, is the newest position in journalism. This study used content analysis to examine how these editors interacted with audiences on Twitter; which frames occurred within the news articles they posted via Twitter and if these two points of foci varied according to the media format the SMEs represent—print vs. TV news. TV SMEs were more personal in their interaction with their Twitter followers. They also posted more articles that carried the technology frame while print SMEs emphasized the human interest, conflict and economic impact frames the most. Overall, all SMEs emphasized technology and human interest stories while downplaying the conflict and economic impact frames. This particular finding goes against the norm since research shows that mainstream news coverage emphasizes conflict and economic frames while readers follow disaster, economic and political news the closest.
Abstract: Se presentan los resultados de un analisis de contenido sobre el tratamiento informativo de la inmigracion en la prensa y telediarios espanoles, dado el papel que juegan los medios en la formacion de estereotipos y actitudes prejuiciosas hacia los inmigrantes. Para ello, se tomo como referencia la novedosa Teoria delFraming. La recogida de datos se realizo de enero a junio de 2004, revisandose una semana completa (construida aleatoriamente) de los informativos televisivos de prime time (TVE1, Antena 3 y Tele 5) y diarios (El Pais, El Mundo, ABC y La Razon), obteniendose un total de 458 unidades de analisis.Los resultados muestran que la mayoria de las noticias hacen referencia a asuntos de caracter negativo, destacando ademas el encuadre noticioso que vincula la delincuencia con la inmigracion. Ademas, las noticias que enfatizaban este encuadre, eran las que recibian un emplazamiento mas privilegiado. Junto a ello, se comprobo que la television destacaba por tener un mayor nivel de sensacionalismo en sus informaciones. Finalmente, se reflexiona sobre las consecuencias cognitivas de esta practica mediatica, dado que el emplazamiento privilegiado de noticias negativas sobre la inmigracion le proporciona mayor visibilidad, convirtiendo un proceso social en un problema para la opinion publica.Palabras clave: Inmigracion, analisis de contenido, informativos televisivos, prensa, teoria del framing. Presents the results of a content’s analysis about the handling of immigration’s information in Spanish press and TV news, according to the role of media in the formation of stereotypes and prejudiced attitudes toward immigrants. This work is based in the famous Theory of Framing. Data was obtained between January and June of the year 2004, reviewing a complete week (randomly constructed) of TV’s informative prime time (TVE1, Antena 3, and Tele 5), and newspapers (El Pais, El Mundo, ABC, and La Razon), getting a total of 458 analysis units.Results show that most of the news refer to negative aspects, highlighting the news frame that links delinquency with immigration. Furthermore, news emphasizing this frame received a more privileged position. Also, TV tends to be more sensationalist in its information. Finally, a reflection is made about cognitive consequences of this practice, considering that this privileged position of negative news about immigration makes it more visible, converting a social process into a problem for public opinion.Key words: Immigration, content analysis, tv news, press, theory of framing.
