Applying NFV and SDN to LTE mobile core gateways, the functions placement problem

TL;DR: It is argued that within a widely-spanned mobile network, there is in fact a high potential to combine NFV and SDN and there will be areas of the mobile network rather benefiting from an NFV deployment with all functions virtualized, while for other areas, an SDN deployment with functions decomposition is more advantageous.
Proceedings ArticleDOI

A Virtual SDN-Enabled LTE EPC Architecture: A Case Study for S-/P-Gateways Functions

TL;DR: Analysis of the EPC nodes and proposed mapping for these functions on four alternative deployment frameworks based on SDN and OpenFlow shows that functions, which involve high data packet processing such as tunneling, have more potential to be kept on the data-plane network element, i.e. an OpenFlow Switch.
Journal ArticleDOI

Towards a Cost Optimal Design for a 5G Mobile Core Network Based on SDN and NFV

TL;DR: A Pareto optimal multi-objective model that achieves a balance between network and data center cost is proposed that results in reducing the optimization complexity and achieves savings in run time while keeping a minimal optimality gap.

Control mechanism for reliability and availability setting in virtual networks

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a mechanism for improving the reliability of a virtual network and resources used at the infrastructure provider level, where a request for providing resources for the virtual network is sent towards an infrastructure provider.

Controlling of communication network comprising virtualized network functions

TL;DR: In this paper, a method comprising determining that at least one virtualized network function providing services related to a communication network is to be deinstantiated, preparing an indication related to the de-instantiation of the at least virtualised network function, and causing transmission of the prepared indication to at least a network element of the communication network, a network function of communication network and a database to which network elements or network functions of the network have access is presented.
