This critical review will be of interest to the experts in porous solids (including catalysis), but also solid state chemists and physicists. It presents the state-of-the-art on hybrid porous solids, their advantages, their new routes of synthesis, the structural concepts useful for their ‘design’, aiming at reaching very large pores. Their dynamic properties and the possibility of predicting their structure are described. The large tunability of the pore size leads to unprecedented properties and applications. They concern adsorption of species, storage and delivery and the physical properties of the dense phases. (323 references)

Molecular self-assembly is the spontaneous association of molecules under equilibrium conditions into stable, structurally well-defined aggregates joined by noncovalent bonds. Molecular self-assembly is ubiquitous in biological systems and underlies the formation of a wide variety of complex biological structures. Understanding self-assembly and the associated noncovalent interactions that connect complementary interacting molecular surfaces in biological aggregates is a central concern in structural biochemistry. Self-assembly is also emerging as a new strategy in chemical synthesis, with the potential of generating nonbiological structures with dimensions of 1 to 10(2) nanometers (with molecular weights of 10(4) to 10(10) daltons). Structures in the upper part of this range of sizes are presently inaccessible through chemical synthesis, and the ability to prepare them would open a route to structures comparable in size (and perhaps complementary in function) to those that can be prepared by microlithography and other techniques of microfabrication.

The formation of an iron(III) complex with a new multidentate ligand, Nα-pyridoxyl-L-tryptophan(1, H2pltp), has been investigated thermodynamically and kinetically in an aqueous 0.10 mol dm−3 sodium perchlorate solution at 25°C. A 1:2(metal : ligand) complex of 1 forms with much higher stability constant (logβ12/mol−2 dm6 = 38.29±0.28) than the related complex, bis(pyridoxylidene-L-tryptophan)iron(III), having the azomethine group (log β12/mol−2 dm6 = 18.38±0.10 [3]). This effect was explained by the contribution of amino nitrogen of higher basicity to the thermodynamic stability. The complex formation reaction proceeds through two parallel pathways of Fe3+ +H3pltp+ and FeOH2+ +H4pltp2+ and also another pathway of FeOH2+ +H3pltp+ with slower coordination of the first ligand to iron(III). The mechanistic rate-determining step for the formation of the complex was the coordination of the phenolato oxygen to a central metal atom, followed by the rapid donations of the amino nitrogen and carboxylato oxygen atoms.

Kinetics and mechanism of the formation of an iron(III) complex with Nα-pyridoxyl-L-tryptophan

Novel amphiphilic dinuclear complex, copper(II) tetrakis(6-hydroxy-nicotinic dodesyl amide)palladium(II) complex with long hydrophobic alkyl chains ((CuPd(hnda)4(DMF)) (1)), was synthesized and characterized by electronic absorption, IR, and ESR spectroscopic and elemental and X-ray diffraction methods. X-ray analysis of the single crystal of 1 obtained from a DMF/H2O mixed solution revealed a lantern-type dinuclear Pd(II)-Cu(II) structure bridged by four HNDA ligands, in which Pd(II) and Cu(II) ions were respectively tetrakis-coordinated with the nitrogen and oxygen atoms of four HNDA ligands in the equatorial plane. The apical site of Cu(II) atom was occupied by a DMF molecule, and the apical site of Pd(II) atom was weakly linked with a water molecule. The four HNDA dodesyl groups extended outward to form a hydrophobic layer, while the lantern-type dinuclear cores formed a hydrophilic layer. They constructed alternate layered structures composed of hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups. DMF solution of 1 gave an intense ESR spectrum (g￻ = 2.08, g// = 2.41, |A//| = 9.89 mT)� characteristic of a distorted square planar structure, to which the addition of water broadened it. These behaviors were discussed in connection with the structures of amphiphilic complex 1.
