This review paper illustrates the main normal and superconducting state properties of magnesium diboride, a material known since the early 1950s but only recently discovered to be superconductive at a remarkably high critical temperature Tc = 40 K for a binary compound. What makes MgB2 so special? Its high Tc, simple crystal structure, large coherence lengths, high critical current densities and fields, and transparency of grain boundaries to current promise that MgB2 will be a good material for both large-scale applications and electronic devices. During the last seven months, MgB2 has been fabricated in various forms: bulk, single crystals, thin films, tapes and wires. The largest critical current densities, greater than 10 MA cm−2, and critical fields, 40 T, are achieved for thin films. The anisotropy ratio inferred from upper critical field measurements is yet to be resolved as a wide range of values have been reported, γ = 1.2–9. Also, there is no consensus on the existence of a single anisotropic or double energy gap. One central issue is whether or not MgB2 represents a new class of superconductors, which is the tip of an iceberg awaiting to be discovered. To date MgB2 holds the record for the highest Tc among simple binary compounds. However, the discovery of superconductivity in MgB2 revived the interest in non-oxides and initiated a search for superconductivity in related materialss; several compounds have since been announced to be superconductive: TaB2, BeB2.75, C–S composites, and the elemental B under pressure.

Review of superconducting properties of MgB2

Noncarbon support materials for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell electrocatalysts.

Magnesium diboride, MgB2, was recently observed to become superconducting1 at 39 K, which is the highest known transition temperature for a non-copper-oxide bulk material. Isotope-effect measurements, in which atoms are substituted by isotopes of different mass to systematically change the phonon frequencies, are one of the fundamental tests of the nature of the superconducting mechanism in a material. In a conventional Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) superconductor, where the mechanism is mediated by electron–phonon coupling, the total isotope-effect coefficient (in this case, the sum of both the Mg and B coefficients) should be about 0.5. The boron isotope effect was previously shown to be large2 and that was sufficient to establish that MgB2 is a conventional superconductor, but the Mg effect has not hitherto been measured. Here we report the determination of the Mg isotope effect, which is small but measurable. The total reduced isotope-effect coefficient is 0.32, which is much lower than the value expected for a typical BCS superconductor. The low value could be due to complex materials properties, and would seem to require both a large electron–phonon coupling constant and a value of μ* (the repulsive electron–electron interaction) larger than found for most simple metals.

The complex nature of superconductivity in MgB2 as revealed by the reduced total isotope effect.

For decades, borides have been primarily studied as crystallographic oddities. With such a wide variety of structures (a quick survey of the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database counts 1253 entries for binary boron compounds!), it is surprising that the applications of borides have been quite limited despite a great deal of fundamental research. If anything, the rich crystal chemistry found in borides could well provide the right tool for almost any application. The interplay between metals and the boron results in even more varied material's properties, many of which can be tuned via chemistry. Thus, the aim of this review is to reintroduce to the scientific community the developments in boride crystal chemistry over the past 60 years. We tie structures to material properties, and furthermore, elaborate on convenient synthetic routes toward preparing borides.

It is shown that the superconducting transition temperature for compounds in seven different structure types exhibits a peak at about 3.7 to 3.9 valence electrons per atom.

We have observed the transition temperature of both the cubic and tetragonal phases of several high-temperature β-W superconductors. The instability of the cubic lattice appears to be characteristic of high-temperature superconductors.
