In free viewpoint television or 3D video, depth image based rendering (DIBR) is used to generate virtual views based on a textured image and its associated depth information. In doing so, image regions which are occluded in the original view may become visible in the virtual image. One of the main challenges in DIBR is to extrapolate known textures into the disoccluded area without inserting subjective annoyance. In this paper, a new hole filling approach for DIBR using texture synthesis is presented. Initially, the depth map in the virtual view is filled at disoccluded locations. Then, in the textured image, holes of limited spatial extent are closed by solving Laplace equations. Larger disoccluded regions are initialized via median filtering and subsequently refined by patch-based texture synthesis. Experimental results show that the proposed approach provides improved rendering results in comparison to the latest MPEG view synthesis reference software (VSRS) version 3.6 [1].

Depth image based rendering with advanced texture synthesis

A depth image-based rendering (DIBR) approach with advanced inpainting methods is presented. The DIBR algorithm can be used in 3-D video applications to synthesize a number of different perspectives of the same scene, e.g., from a multiview-video-plus-depth (MVD) representation. This MVD format consists of video and depth sequences for a limited number of original camera views of the same natural scene. Here, DIBR methods allow the computation of additional new views. An inherent problem of the view synthesis concept is the fact that image information which is occluded in the original views may become visible, especially in extrapolated views beyond the viewing range of the original cameras. The presented algorithm synthesizes these occluded textures. The synthesizer achieves visually satisfying results by taking spatial and temporal consistency measures into account. Detailed experiments show significant objective and subjective gains of the proposed method in comparison to the state-of-the-art methods.

Depth Image-Based Rendering With Advanced Texture Synthesis for 3-D Video

We present a novel formulation of exemplar-based inpainting as a global energy optimization problem, written in terms of the offset map. The proposed energy function combines a data attachment term that ensures the continuity of reconstruction at the boundary of the inpainting domain with a smoothness term that ensures a visually coherent reconstruction inside the hole. This formulation is adapted to obtain a global minimum using the graph cuts algorithm. To reduce the computational complexity, we propose an efficient multiscale graph cuts algorithm. To compensate the loss of information at low resolution levels, we use a feature representation computed at the original image resolution. This permits alleviation of the ambiguity induced by comparing only color information when the image is represented at low resolution levels. Our experiments show how well the proposed algorithm performs compared with other recent algorithms.

Exemplar-Based Image Inpainting Using Multiscale Graph Cuts

View synthesis with depth-image-based rendering (DIBR) has attracted great interest in that it can provide a virtual image at any arbitrary viewpoint in 3-D video and free-viewpoint TV. An inherent problem in the DIBR view synthesis is occurrence of holes in a synthesized image, which is also known as disocclusion problem. The disoccluded regions need to be handled properly in order to generate a synthesized view of good quality. This paper provides a fundamental examination of hole generation mechanism in the DIBR oriented view synthesis process. A necessary and sufficient condition of hole generation is first shown, and the corresponding hole location and length is obtained analytically. Furthermore, in view that the conventional hole filling algorithms may fail to fill up a hole correctly when lacking (adequate) visible background information, we propose utilizing the occluded (invisible) information to identify and locate the relevant background pixels around a hole. We then make use of the visible and invisible background information together to perform hole filling. Experimental results validate our hole generation model demonstrating agreement to our analytical results, while our proposed hole filling approach shows superior performance in terms of visual quality of synthesized views.

Depth Image Based View Synthesis: New Insights and Perspectives on Hole Generation and Filling

Free-viewpoint rendering (FVR) has become a popular topic in 3-D research. A promising technology in FVR is to generate virtual views using a single texture image and the corresponding depth image. A critical problem that occurs when generating virtual views is that the regions covered by the foreground objects in the original view may be disoccluded in the synthesized views. In this paper, a depth based disocclusion filling algorithm using patch-based texture synthesis is proposed. In contrast to the existing patch-based virtual view synthesis methods, the filling priority is driven by the robust structure tensor that efficiently reflects the overall structure of an image part and a new confidence term that produces fine synthesis results even near the foreground boundaries. Moreover, the best-matched patch is searched in the background regions and finally it is chosen through a new patch distance measure. Significant superiority of the proposed method over the state-of-the-art methods is presented by comparing the experimental results.
