Journal ArticleDOI
Decrease of Invasive Pneumococcal Infections in Children Among 8 Children’s Hospitals in the United States After the Introduction of the 7-Valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine
Sheldon L. Kaplan,Edward O. Mason,Ellen R. Wald,Gordon E. Schutze,John S. Bradley,Tina Q. Tan,Jill A. Hoffman,Laurence B. Givner,Ram Yogev,William J. Barson +9 more
TL;DR: The number of invasive pneumococcal infections caused by vaccine-serogroup isolates among 8 US children's hospitals has decreased and penicillin resistance decreased in 2002 for the first time since surveillance began in 1993-1994.
Journal ArticleDOI
Clinical characteristics of children with complicated pneumonia caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae
Tina Q. Tan,Edward O. Mason,Ellen R. Wald,William J. Barson,Gordon E. Schutze,John S. Bradley,Laurence B. Givner,Ram Yogev,Ram Yogev,Kwang Sik Kim,Sheldon L. Kaplan +10 more
TL;DR: The relative frequency of complicated disease in hospitalized children with pneumococcal pneumonia is increasing and patients with complicated disease were older and significantly more likely to be of white race and have chest pain on presentation compared with patients with uncomplicated disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Three-Year Multicenter Surveillance of Pneumococcal Meningitis in Children: Clinical Characteristics, and Outcome Related to Penicillin Susceptibility and Dexamethasone Use
Moshe Arditi,Edward O. Mason,John S. Bradley,Tina Q. Tan,William J. Barson,Gordon E. Schutze,Ellen R. Wald,Laurence B. Givner,Kwang Sik Kim,Ram Yogev,Sheldon L. Kaplan +10 more
TL;DR: The results show that the nonsusceptible organisms do not seem to be intrinsically more virulent than the susceptible strains and that the use of dexamethasone was not associated with a beneficial effect in this retrospective and nonrandomized study.
Journal ArticleDOI
Early trends for invasive pneumococcal infections in children after the introduction of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine
Sheldon L. Kaplan,William J. Barson,Philana Ling Lin,Jose R. Romero,John S. Bradley,Tina Q. Tan,Jill A. Hoffman,Laurence B. Givner,Edward O. Mason +8 more
TL;DR: Since routine PCV13 immunization in 2010, invasive pneumococcal infections decreased 42% overall and 53% for children <24 months of age in 2011 compared with the average number of cases for 2007 to 2009.
Journal ArticleDOI
Safety, tolerance and pharmacokinetics of a humanized monoclonal antibody to respiratory syncytial virus in premature infants and infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia. MEDI-493 Study Group
K.N. Siva Subramanian,Leonard E. Weisman,Torunn Rhodes,Ronald L. Ariagno,Pablo J. Sánchez,Jean J. Steichen,Laurence B. Givner,Terese L. Jennings,Franklin H. Top,David Carlin,Edward M. Connor +10 more
TL;DR: MEDI-493 was safe and well-tolerated in this high risk pediatric population of premature infants or infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia and did not induce a specific anti-MEDi-493 response.
