Coupling the high data rates of IEEE 802.11p-based VANETs and the wide coverage area of 3GPP networks (e.g., UMTS), this paper envisions a VANET-UMTS integrated network architecture. In this architecture, vehicles are dynamically clustered according to different related metrics. From these clusters, a minimum number of vehicles, equipped with IEEE 802.11p and UTRAN interfaces, are selected as vehicular gateways to link VANET to UMTS. Issues pertaining to gateway selection, gateway advertisement and discovery, service migration between gateways (i.e., when serving gateways lose their optimality) are all addressed and an adaptive mobile gateway management mechanism is proposed. Simulations are carried out using NS2 to evaluate the performance of the envisioned architecture incorporating the proposed mechanisms. Encouraging results are obtained in terms of high data packet delivery ratios and throughput, reduced control packet overhead, and minimized delay and packet drop rates.

Dynamic Clustering-Based Adaptive Mobile Gateway Management in Integrated VANET — 3G Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

In recent years, the smart home field has caught wide attention and witnessed rapid development. Smart devices, continuously increasing in number, make user management and implementation more difficult while promoting the development of the smart home. How to design an efficient smart home management platform is one of the great challenges the current smart home field faces. This article refers to the core idea of SDN, and proposed the software defined smart home platform, SDSH for short. The design features of virtualization, openness, and centralization can effectively integrate the heterogeneous network devices in the smart home platform, and flexibly adapt to the great difference between family scenes and user demands. At the same time, this article brings up the core technology of SDSH, and discusses the application value of the four core technologies and the new challenges the current technology is facing in a smart home scenario. In the end, regarding the SDSH application scenarios, this article analyzes the household experience innovation brought by this kind of smart home management platform, and the opportunities and challenges the SDSH platform faces.

Toward software defined smart home

Motivated by the emerging standards for indoor pico-cellular wireless systems, such as the Bluetooth, we propose and study the scheduling policies for master driven time division duplex (TDD) wireless networks. In these networks, the frequency band is divided into time slots, and each end (i.e., master or slave) takes turns in using the time slots. In Bluetooth, a slave transmits packets in the reverse slot only after the master polls the slave in a forward slot (by sending data to it). The conventional scheduling policies such as round robin do not perform well in these systems as they are not suited to the tight coupling of the uplink-downlink. We propose new scheduling policies, (i) the priority scheme, and, (ii) the K-fairness scheme that utilize the state at the master and slaves to schedule the TDD slots effectively. Active slaves are differentiated based upon the binary information (i.e., the presence or absence of packets in a slave queue) about the master-slave queue pairs. The priority scheme achieves high throughput as compared to the packet-by-packet generalized processor sharing (PGPS) based policies while guaranteeing a minimal service to each active slave while the K-fairness policy is characterized by a tight fairness bound as well as high system throughput. We then extend these policies for scheduling variable size data in the presence of voice. Further, since Bluetooth supports variable size data packets (1, 3 or 5 slots) on the same connections, the segmentation and reassembly (SAR) can significantly impact scheduling of data packets by varying packet size distribution. We propose an intelligent SAR policy (ISAR) and compare it with the naive random-SAR in which the data packet sizes (i.e., 1, 3 or 5) are assigned probabilistically. ISAR adapts MAC packet size at the master and slave queues depending on the data arrival rates at both the queues.

Data scheduling and SAR for Bluetooth MAC

In 2013 the Editor of Journal of Vibration and Control and SAGE became aware of a peer review ring involving assumed and fabricated identities that appeared to centre around Peter Chen at National Pingtung University of Education, Taiwan (NPUE). SAGE and the Editor then began a complex investigation into the case during the rest of 2013 and 2014. Following an unsatisfactory response from Peter Chen, NPUE was notified. NPUE were serious in addressing the Journal and SAGE’s concerns. NPUE confirmed that the institution was investigating Peter Chen. SAGE subsequently uncovered a citation ring involving the above mentioned author and others. We regret that individual authors have compromised the academic record by perverting the peer review process and apologise to readers. On uncovering problems with peer review and citation SAGE immediately put steps in place to avoid similar vulnerability of the Journal to exploitation in the future. Applications for medical recovery using wireless control of a bluetooth ball with a hybrid G-sensor and human-computer interface technology

Vehicle Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs), based on IEEE 802.11p, and 3G & beyond networks are characterized by their high date transmission rates and wide range communication, respectively. This paper presents an architecture that integrates between the two, making advantage of the features of each. Design guidelines pertaining to vehicle clustering and gateway management are defined. The former aims for enhancing the link stability within the VANET, whereas the latter sustains inter-connectivity of the VANET with the backhaul 3G & beyond network. Simulations are carried out using NS2 to evaluate the performance of the integrated network architecture and encouraging results are obtained in terms of high data packet delivery ratio, reduced control packet overhead, and reduced packet drop rate.

Design Guidelines for a Network Architecture Integrating VANET with 3G & beyond Networks

This paper describes the issue of piconet interconnection for Bluetooth technology. These larger networks, known as scatternets, have the potential to increase networking flexibility and facilitate new applications. While the Bluetooth specification permits piconet interconnection, the creation, operation and maintenance of scatternets remains open. In this paper, the research contributions in this arena are brought together, to give an overview of the state-of-the-art. First, operation of the Bluetooth system is explained, followed by the mechanism for link formation. Then, the issue of piconet interconnection is considered in detail. Processes for network formation, routing and intra- and inter-piconet scheduling, are explained and classified. Finally, the research issues arising are outlined.

Bluetooth scatternet formation: A survey

Bluetooth technology permits wireless interconnection for local area communication. While the specification defines how up to eight devices can connect using the same radio channel to form a piconet, piconets may overlap, permitting the formation of much larger networks called scatternets. To create connected scatternets, a wide range of decentralized protocols (algorithms) have been proposed. In this paper we address the centralized optimization of topological characteristics that affect scatternet performance. Knowledge of optimized scatternet topology is useful when comparing decentralized protocols and the scatternets they produce. This paper introduces the first multiple objective optimization framework for scatternets, which operates by optimizing node sequencings that represent scatternets. Using NSGA-II, the framework is described, tuned and applied to determine the trade-offs between competing optimization objectives. Finally, the results are used to benchmark the performance and characteristics of four existing protocols from the literature.

What are the characteristics of optimal Bluetooth scatternets

In this paper we describe the problem of determining the site requirements for 3G multimedia services. Estimating the minimum number of sites required to provide sufficient coverage and capacity is vital for network planning purposes. We demonstrate how link budget analysis can be used in conjunction with capacity constraints to estimate site requirements, taking into account mobility requirements and other factors dictated by the service mix.

We present results from ongoing research in this area. Our approach is being used to support a forthcoming online benchmarking facility for Bluetooth scatternets (www.scatternet.org), which will supply a suite of common test problems, metrics and results for use in the development, testing and comparison of decentralised scatternet formation protocols.
