Due to the rapid growth in IT technology, digital data have increased availability, creating novel security threats that need immediate attention. An intrusion detection system (IDS) is the most promising solution for preventing malicious intrusions and tracing suspicious network behavioral patterns. Machine learning (ML) methods are widely used in IDS. Due to a limited training dataset, an ML-based IDS generates a higher false detection ratio and encounters data imbalance issues. To deal with the data-imbalance issue, this research develops an efficient hybrid network-based IDS model (HNIDS), which is utilized using the enhanced genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization(EGA-PSO) and improved random forest (IRF) methods. In the initial phase, the proposed HNIDS utilizes hybrid EGA-PSO methods to enhance the minor data samples and thus produce a balanced data set to learn the sample attributes of small samples more accurately. In the proposed HNIDS, a PSO method improves the vector. GA is enhanced by adding a multi-objective function, which selects the best features and achieves improved fitness outcomes to explore the essential features and helps minimize dimensions, enhance the true positive rate (TPR), and lower the false positive rate (FPR). In the next phase, an IRF eliminates the less significant attributes, incorporates a list of decision trees across each iterative process, supervises the classifier’s performance, and prevents overfitting issues. The performance of the proposed method and existing ML methods are tested using the benchmark datasets NSL-KDD. The experimental findings demonstrated that the proposed HNIDS method achieves an accuracy of 98.979% on BCC and 88.149% on MCC for the NSL-KDD dataset, which is far better than the other ML methods i.e., SVM, RF, LR, NB, LDA, and CART.

Machine Learning for Biomedical Application

Recent advancements in deep learning architectures have extended their application to computer vision tasks, one of which is the segmentation of retinal blood vessels from retinal fundus images. This is a problem that has piqued researchers’ interest in recent times. This paper presents a review of the taxonomy and analysis of enhancement techniques used in recent works to modify and optimize the performance of deep learning retinal blood vessels segmentation methods. The objectives of this study are to critically review the taxonomies of the state-of-the-art deep learning retinal blood vessels segmentation methods, observe the trends of the enhancement techniques of recent work, identify the challenges, and suggest potential future research directions. The taxonomies focused on in this paper include optimization algorithms, regularization methods, pooling operations, activation functions, transfer learning, and ensemble learning methods. In doing this, 110 relevant papers spanning the years 2016 to 2021 are reviewed. The findings could aid future research plans, while the suggested ideas would improve the predictive accuracy of future models for automatic retinal blood vessels segmentation algorithms with good generalization ability and optimal performance.

A Survey of Deep Learning for Retinal Blood Vessel Segmentation Methods: Taxonomy, Trends, Challenges and Future Directions

Intrusion Detection Systems: A State-of-the-Art Taxonomy and Survey

Imbalanced sample distribution is usually the main reason for the performance degradation of machine learning algorithms. Based on this, this study proposes a hybrid framework (RGAN-EL) combining generative adversarial networks and ensemble learning method to improve the classification performance of imbalanced data. Firstly, we propose a training sample selection strategy based on roulette wheel selection method to make GAN pay more attention to the class overlapping area when fitting the sample distribution. Secondly, we design two kinds of generator training loss, and propose a noise sample filtering method to improve the quality of generated samples. Then, minority class samples are oversampled using the improved RGAN to obtain a balanced training sample set. Finally, combined with the ensemble learning strategy, the final training and prediction are carried out. We conducted experiments on 41 real imbalanced data sets using two evaluation indexes: F1-score and AUC. Specifically, we compare RGAN-EL with six typical ensemble learning; RGAN is compared with three typical GAN models. The experimental results show that RGAN-EL is significantly better than the other six ensemble learning methods, and RGAN is greatly improved compared with three classical GAN models.

Fundus blood vessel image segmentation plays an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and is the basis of computer-aided diagnosis. Feature information from the retinal blood vessel image is relatively complicated, and the existing algorithms are sometimes difficult to perform effective segmentation with. Aiming at the problems of low accuracy and low sensitivity of the existing segmentation methods, an improved U-shaped neural network (MRU-NET) segmentation method for retinal vessels was proposed. Firstly, the image enhancement algorithm and random segmentation method are used to solve the problems of low contrast and insufficient image data of the original image. Moreover, smaller image blocks after random segmentation are helpful to reduce the complexity of the U-shaped neural network model; secondly, the residual learning is introduced into the encoder and decoder to improve the efficiency of feature use and to reduce information loss, and a feature fusion module is introduced between the encoder and decoder to extract image features with different granularities; and finally, a feature balancing module is added to the skip connections to resolve the semantic gap between low-dimensional features in the encoder and high-dimensional features in decoder. Experimental results show that our method has better accuracy and sensitivity on the DRIVE and STARE datasets (accuracy (ACC) = 0.9611, sensitivity (SE) = 0.8613; STARE: ACC = 0.9662, SE = 0.7887) than some of the state-of-the-art methods.

MRU-NET: A U-Shaped Network for Retinal Vessel Segmentation

The detection and location of image splicing forgery are a challenging task in the field of image forensics. It is to study whether an image contains a suspicious tampered area pasted from another image. In this paper, we propose a new image tamper location method based on dual-channel U-Net, that is, DCU-Net. The detection framework based on DCU-Net is mainly divided into three parts: encoder, feature fusion, and decoder. Firstly, high-pass filters are used to extract the residual of the tampered image and generate the residual image, which contains the edge information of the tampered area. Secondly, a dual-channel encoding network model is constructed. The input of the model is the original tampered image and the tampered residual image. Then, the deep features extracted from the dual-channel encoding network are fused for the first time, and then the tampered features with different granularity are extracted by dilation convolution, and then, the secondary fusion is carried out. Finally, the fused feature map is input into the decoder, and the predicted image is decoded layer by layer. The experimental results on Casia2.0 and Columbia datasets show that DCU-Net performs better than the latest algorithm and can accurately locate tampered areas. In addition, the attack experiments show that DCU-Net model has good robustness and can resist noise and JPEG recompression attacks.
