Summary Background Since December, 2019, Wuhan, China, has experienced an outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients with COVID-19 have been reported but risk factors for mortality and a detailed clinical course of illness, including viral shedding, have not been well described. Methods In this retrospective, multicentre cohort study, we included all adult inpatients (≥18 years old) with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 from Jinyintan Hospital and Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital (Wuhan, China) who had been discharged or had died by Jan 31, 2020. Demographic, clinical, treatment, and laboratory data, including serial samples for viral RNA detection, were extracted from electronic medical records and compared between survivors and non-survivors. We used univariable and multivariable logistic regression methods to explore the risk factors associated with in-hospital death. Findings 191 patients (135 from Jinyintan Hospital and 56 from Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital) were included in this study, of whom 137 were discharged and 54 died in hospital. 91 (48%) patients had a comorbidity, with hypertension being the most common (58 [30%] patients), followed by diabetes (36 [19%] patients) and coronary heart disease (15 [8%] patients). Multivariable regression showed increasing odds of in-hospital death associated with older age (odds ratio 1·10, 95% CI 1·03–1·17, per year increase; p=0·0043), higher Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score (5·65, 2·61–12·23; p Interpretation The potential risk factors of older age, high SOFA score, and d-dimer greater than 1 μg/mL could help clinicians to identify patients with poor prognosis at an early stage. Prolonged viral shedding provides the rationale for a strategy of isolation of infected patients and optimal antiviral interventions in the future. Spreading Depolarization (SD) is a phenomenon in the brain related to the abrupt depolarization of neurons in gray matter which results from a break-down of ion gradients across the neuron membrane and propagates like a wave of ischemia. While modulating the hemodynamic response of the SDs is a therapeutic target, the lack of imaging methods that allow for monitoring SDs with high spatiotemporal resolution hinder progress in the field. In this work, we address this bottleneck with a new method for brain imaging based on multispectral imaging (MSI).

Abstract: Multispectral Imaging Enables Visualization of Spreading Depolarizations in Gyrencephalic Brain.

3D Visualization of anatomical data is an integral part of diagnostics and treatment in many medical disciplines, such as radiology, surgery and forensic medicine. To enable intuitive interaction with the data, we recently proposed a new concept for on-patient visualization of medical data which involves rendering of subsurface structures on a mobile display that can be moved along the human body. The data fusion is achieved with a range imaging device attached to the display. The range data is used to register static 3D medical imaging data with the patient body based on a surface matching algorithm. However, our previous prototype was based on the Microsoft Kinect camera and thus required a cable connection to acquire color and depth data. The contribution of this paper is two-fold. Firstly, we replace the Kinect with the Structure Sensor - a novel cable-free range imaging device - to improve handling and user experience and show that the resulting accuracy (target registration error: 4.8±1.5 mm) is comparable to that achieved with the Kinect. Secondly, a new approach to visualizing complex 3D anatomy based on this device, as well as 3D printed models of anatomical surfaces, is presented. We demonstrate that our concept can be applied to in vivo data and to a 3D printed skull of a forensic case. Our new device is the next step towards clinical integration and shows that the concept cannot only be applied during autopsy but also for presentation of forensic data to laypeople in court or medical education.

Structure Sensor for mobile markerless augmented reality

Eine der grosten Herausforderungen im Kontext von computergestutzten Systemen fur laparoskopische Eingriffe stellt die intraoperative prazise und schnelle Rekonstruktion von Organoberflachen dar. Diese ermoglicht eine Registrierung praoperativer Planungsdaten auf die Patientenanatomie zur Einblendung von Ziel- und Risikostrukturen in das Videobild. Vor diesem Hintergrund eroffnet die Time-of- Flight (ToF)-Kameratechnik aufgrund der schnellen und dichten 3D-Oberflachenvermessung neue Perspektiven fur die laparoskopische computerassistierte Chirurgie. In diesem Beitrag stellen wir die erste invitro Evaluationsstudie zum Vergleich ToF-basierter endoskopischer mit Stereoskopie-basierter Oberflachenrekonstruktion vor.
